A trail in the ashes

The first rays of dawn crept over the Moretti Estate, but they brought no peace. Luca Moretti stood in the courtyard, his tailored black suit stained with soot from the warehouse fire. His piercing gray eyes never left the burnt piece of fabric resting in his hand—the only evidence recovered from the place where his grandfather had been taken. Antonio approached quietly. "You should get some rest, Boss." Luca shook his head. "My grandfather is somewhere out there. While I'm sleeping, he's fighting to stay alive." Antonio sighed. He had watched Luca grow from a reckless teenager into the feared leader of the Moretti family. But beneath the cold exterior, Luca was still a grandson desperate to save the man who had raised him. "Vincent has finished questioning the survivor." Luca's eyes narrowed. "The guard?" Antonio nodded. "He remembered something before he lost consciousness." Without another word, Luca headed for the estate's medical wing. --- The wounded guard lay on a hospital bed, bandages wrapped around his chest and shoulder. His breathing was shallow, but when he saw Luca, he struggled to sit upright. "I'm sorry, Boss..." "You have nothing to apologize for," Luca replied calmly. "Tell me everything you remember." The man's lips trembled. "There were... six of them." Luca remained silent. "They wore black tactical gear. Their faces were covered." "Did you hear any names?" The guard closed his eyes, trying to remember. "No... but one of them shouted..." He coughed violently. "'Move him to Pier Nine before sunrise!'" The room fell silent. Antonio looked at Luca. "Pier Nine." It was one of the oldest docks in the city. Abandoned years ago. Perfect for hiding hostages. Luca turned toward Vincent. "Get every available man." "Boss?" "We're going to Pier Nine." --- Miles away... Inside an abandoned fishing warehouse overlooking the sea, Giovanni Moretti slowly lifted his head. His hands were still tied. His body ached from hours of captivity. Footsteps echoed through the room. A masked man entered carrying a tray of food. He placed it on the floor. "You should eat." Giovanni laughed bitterly. "I don't take gifts from cowards." The kidnapper said nothing. Instead, he reached into his pocket and removed a silver pocket watch. Giovanni's smile disappeared. It was his watch. The one Luca had given him on his seventieth birthday. "Where did you get that?" The masked man tilted his head. "It was taken from you." He leaned closer. "And soon..." "...everything your family owns will belong to someone else." Before Giovanni could respond, the man walked away, locking the heavy steel door behind him. --- By midday... Three black SUVs raced toward Pier Nine. Luca sat in the lead vehicle. No one spoke. Everyone knew this could be a trap. As they approached the deserted docks, Vincent signaled for the convoy to stop. The area was eerily quiet. Old shipping containers stood rusting beneath the blazing sun. The smell of saltwater filled the air. Luca stepped out first. "Spread out." His men moved silently. Every warehouse was searched. Every container was opened. Nothing. Antonio frowned. "Could we have been too late?" Luca refused to believe it. "No." He continued walking until something caught his eye. Fresh tire tracks. Unlike the old marks surrounding them, these were recent. He crouched beside them. "They left in a hurry." Vincent joined him. "They lead toward the eastern road." Before Luca could answer, one of his men shouted from inside a nearby warehouse. "Boss!" Luca rushed inside. The warehouse was empty except for a wooden chair in the center of the room. A thick rope still hung from its armrests. Antonio examined it. "They kept someone here." Luca's jaw tightened. His grandfather. On the floor beside the chair lay something small. A cufflink. Gold. Engraved with the letter G. Luca picked it up carefully. His grandfather had worn those cufflinks for years. They hadn't arrived too late. They had missed him by only a few hours. --- Across the city... Isabella sat quietly in the university library, pretending to read. Her mind kept drifting back to Luca. The cold determination in his eyes. The pain he tried so hard to hide. She didn't know why she cared. She barely knew the man. Her phone buzzed. It was an unknown number. She hesitated before answering. "Hello?" No response. Then... A man's voice whispered, "If you value your life..." "...stay away from Luca Moretti." The line went dead. Isabella stared at the screen, her heartbeat racing. Who was watching her? And how did they know she had met Luca? --- Back at Pier Nine... Luca stood at the edge of the dock, staring out at the endless sea. Antonio walked over. "We searched everywhere." Luca remained silent. "The kidnappers cleaned the place before leaving." Luca looked down at the cufflink in his palm. "No." Antonio frowned. "They left this behind." "You think it was intentional?" Luca nodded slowly. "My grandfather is smarter than any of them." He closed his fingers around the gold cufflink. "This wasn't an accident." "It was a message." Antonio's eyes widened. "A message?" Luca looked toward the horizon, determination burning in his eyes. "He's telling me he was here." "And he's telling me to keep looking." For the first time since the kidnapping, Luca felt something he hadn't felt in days. Hope. Somewhere out there, Giovanni Moretti was alive. And Luca swore that no matter how many enemies stood in his way, he would bring his grandfather home—even if he had to burn the city's criminal underworld to the ground to do it.
