John looked at the steering wheel in worry. The metal was already denting at the pressure Lark was putting at it. He could see the vein tick on the side of his temple and the gritted teeth that suppresses the anger welling inside his alpha. Of course, he too was angry. Who wouldn't? A large number of rogues suddenly sneaked past the patrols late last night and killed one werewolf. Some of the training warriors were also injured and even few of the civilians were harmed. They must've known that both of them were gone for a long time. Then took it as a chance to gather information and terrorize the town. John clenched his fist. The knuckles whitening in pressure. What worried them the most was keeping their mates and their pack safe. However, it was a hard task given the distance from Lark's manor to the pack village. "We should put some of our wolves around the manor." He blurted out and Lark glanced at him, nodding in agreement. They can't leave them unprotected. The rogues may not know who those girls are, but once they did, they will surely take it as a leverage against them. "We must. We have the advantage of them not knowing who they are yet and them being humans, will keep them from harm." Lark's face took a grim shade. His eyes held blood-lust in them. If they ever touch one hair on Licht's body, there will be hell to pay. John shared his sentiments. "The pack will be shocked. Should we let them know that they have a Luna and Beta female now?" He asked, Lark shook his head. "You know that it's too early for that. They will want to see them and I don't think the girls will like having hundreds of new faces wanting to meet them." John nodded in understanding. Sometimes he forgets that his mate is a human. A frail thing that could easily be targeted by his enemies. He let out an involuntary growl as his wolf rage at the idea of its mate in danger. "Calm down, we can't approach this with a raging temper." Lark said, also reminding himself of that. "Well someone was a great influence to you. If this was before, you would be at the rogue's necks tearing them apart in anger." He commented, one brow raised. Lark laughed despite the situation. It was true, having Licht made him level headed and calm even in this trying times. "I guess we should think more about telling them what we are than planning on letting the pack know about them." John murmured while fiddling at the compartment box. He had always dislike getting on cars when running was clearly faster. But it would be weird for the girls to see them running inside the forest, naked. It will just be insane. John sighed while putting a hand in front of his eyes. "I'm not so sure what's harder. Getting to the root of this rogue problem, or how to approach the subject of us being werewolves to our human mates." He let out a long breath as he watched the trees whirling by. Lark decided to keep silent. It hasn't crossed his mind but John was right. Despite being their mates, they are still human and learning about something they only know as myths will be confusing and downright crazy for them. The thought of rejection passed his mind that had his wolf growling. It was snapping at him for even thinking that their mate wouldn't want them. He too wished for the best. But how common was it to have a human mate? Hell, it was even rare that both the alpha and beta have a human mate. It made them more vulnerable but they wouldn't have it any other way. For them, Licht and Clara are perfect. As they got near the pack, two werewolves flanked their side. Their heads bowed down to show respect to their leaders. As the trees thinned out the wolves slowed down before darting back to their patrol routes. The forest opened up to a paved road, and before long, rows of houses greeted their sights. John looked out to see some of their pack members get out of their homes, bowing as their car passed by. It wasn't customary for them to show such submissiveness. But they insisted to present their obedience and respect to them. John isn't very fond of it but his wolf is. It always liked that their pack obey to them. It meant that they trust them for their protection and leadership. He felt Lark stir away from the main pack house and instead drove towards the building farthest on the left of their territory. It acts as their hospital where a lot of trained pack doctor reside. Those whom learned not just traditional healing for werewolves but incorporates human sciences and modern medicine as well. The car skidded to a halt at the entrance of the said building. A pack member was already waiting for them at the entrance. Lark threw the keys at him which he effortlessly caught. "Most of them are in the second floor and one is in the intensive unit." He said while bowing before getting inside the car and driving off towards the pack house. Lark and John didn't waste anymore time as they entered the hospital. The traditional white walls and bright lights greeted them. Two guards were stationed at the forefront of the building, they gave a curt nod which they returned. They did not bother to ask the staff and no one stopped them as they went to inspect the damage caused by the rouges. They quickly rounded the whole second floor, talking quietly with the doctors and assuring the injured. Thankfully most only received light injuries and their natural healing capabilities will help them recover in a short time. Some required a few more days to rest and the one in the intensive care is having a surgery to ensure that she will live. The two men stood behind the glass partition as they watched the pack doctor operate on the unconscious wolf. She was only a new training warrior and was with the killed werewolf. Her disgruntled wolf was confused and vicious when she was first admitted and it was only when Dr. Sulivan used his Impulse on her, were they able to calm her down and start the operation. Pack doctors with the Impulse are able to connect with the innate regenerative ability of werewolves and help them recover much faster than the usual rate. Those werewolves who have that rare skill also have better understanding of a wolf's strength, physical and mental deposition and emotion. Dr. Sulivan, their best Impulse user, was handling the operation and Lark already knew that the girl will live. And a few more minutes, she had stabilized. The young doctor left the room to talk with his alpha. He bowed when he was a few distance away. Lark dismissed it and quickly asked his questions. "How are the patients and what are the extent of damage?" Though he already confirmed from the other doctors, Sulivan had the best assessment on them and his opinion is very valuable. "They are recovering greatly. I had used my Impulse on those with major injuries and of course with this girl here." He motioned to the still unconscious wolf. Lark nodded his head. "Who was the one killed?" He gritted his teeth as rage tried to overtake his emotion again. Sulivan noted that despite the news, his alpha was able to stay calmer than what he had seen before. His brow rose inquisitively but decided not to pry. He could feel his anger but it was slowly fading, like something was calming him down. He didn't comment on it. He blinked back to reality as he found the two men looking at him expectantly. He cleared his throat before answering. "It was Francis, Jane's instructor." He glanced at the girl again, "He was teaching her stealth and tracking when they were assaulted by the group of rogues." He lamented. "Apparently, those rogues were studying the pattern of our patrol and found a chance to escape them. We still have no idea how they were able to cover their scent for so long but it costs us a life." Sulivan continued, it was wrenching to be able to feel the loss and regret of his fellow pack member. Lark and John's expression turned grim. "He protected her against ten wolves. He did great, killing at least two of them before he died. Jane was traumatized by seeing her instructor's death that's why her wolf became vicious. Although thanks to that she was able to fend off her attackers just enough for help to arrive." "A few civilians found her and alerted the warriors. Their injuries came from helping her. It was very fortunate that there are a group of training warriors close by." He ended, assessing the level of emotion his leaders emitted. Shadows danced at Lark's eyes and anger welled in them. However, he knew that he need to assess this with a level head and not with his temper. "Thank you Sulivan. You must be tired now, you should go and rest." He dismissed the doctor, who only chuckled before bowing. Lark looked at him questioningly but he just smiled at the two of them. Realization clear in his eyes. Lark narrowed his eyes understanding the situation. "Do you want to come with me to the pack house?" He asked, knowing that Sulivan will agree even before he said, "Yes." John looked at them in confusion. The three walked out the hospital after Sulivan instructed some of the helpers and doctors. There was no need for a car as they ran towards the pack house. Being in wolf form is faster but even without that they were already much faster than a human sprinter. They were already in front of the pack house after a few minutes. It was just a simple building that housed most of their training and combat facilities, and meeting rooms. Most of the pack members have their own homes, so the building only acts as a headquarters for them. Once inside, they immediately went to their largest conference room where they found the top warriors already waiting for them. The four men and two women bowed at them when they entered. They returned the gesture before motioning for them to sit down. "Tell me what exactly happened." Lark started, his heavy stare weighing down on the people inside. "I told you to protect the pack while we were gone. How did this happen?" He asked, his tone low but calm. They were a bit stratled to find him not angry at them or even yelling. The largest of the guy, with platinum hair and blue eyes that contrasted heavily with his dark skin, answered. "We deeply ask for your forgiveness alpha, it was our responsibility and we failed. One of ours was dead because of us." He began, eyes hardened in guilt. John shook his head. "It wasn't any of your fault, Derek. If ever, it was ours, since we failed to protect the pack when they needed us." Derek hung his head in shame but accepted it anyway. "Still, we apologize." was the only thing he could say. Derek took a breath first before telling them what happened. "Last night's attack was unusual. Not only did they had a lot of rogues with them but the patrols didn't sense any of the tresspassers, and they really have no scent or at least for a while. That is something that we are still looking at." "It enabled them to enter effortlessly, however, it was confusing why they attacked two lone wolves when they were trying to be inconspicious before." Lark nodded his head, listening attentively while his head think about their unexpected move and the solution for this current predicament. "Are all of them dead, or did you caught some?" Lark asked, his sight never leaving the table. The group tensed up, knowing their alpha's hatred of rogues let alive. They swallowed thickly before one of the girls spoke up. "We did, only one of them. He is currently being detained." She answered Lark rose his head and looked at them, they were all nervous. Despite the composure he is showing, his companions felt fear rise in their spine. It showed how much he detest knowing that a rogue was alive. Still they wonder what is keeping him from lashing out and demand that for it to killed. He took a deep breath, then released it. "I see, you think he will tell us anything useful?" He focused on the red haired girl who answered him earlier, she was startled but nodded her head. "There are a lot of ways to make someone talk." She answered with confidence, a cold glint in her eyes. "Then I'll let you handle it. I can't promise to keep him alive if I set my eyes on him. Sarah, make sure that he will talk." He commanded, suprising them. She nodded her head and promised that results will be given. "Before I tell you something important, let's talk about how to tighten our guards first. I don't want something like this to happen again." Lark said in contemplation. John agreed, "We should also streghten our defence. We will conduct another training for a few weeks. Please make sure that all new warriors take this seriously, our problems aren't going to end soon." "Did you dispose the bodies of the rogues already? If not, please send one to my laboratory immediately. I'll help figure out about how they masked their scent." Sulivan suddenly said, taking their attention for the first time. Lark acknowledged his request and allowed it. "That will help us, thank you." He said before looking back at his team. "Do as you must to ensure our pack's safety. I cannot always be here, and I want to know that you can protect our pack even without us." He speeched, gaining a bow from each of them. The other girl with brunnette hair fidgeted in her sit, "Why can't you just be here on the pack ground always, Alpha?" She asked nervously. Her colleagues shot her a warning look but her courage just increased as her eyes met his head on. Lark smiled despite himself. Andrea was the newest top warrior he let on his team, and even if she looked shy or weak, she was anything but. And he appreciate it when they question him like this. It showed him that they have backbones. "You're right. It is my duty to be here to protect you, and I have failed that -" He was met by a barrage of disagreement from his peers, but he just silenced them by raising a hand. He waited for them to silence before speaking again. "No matter what, I let my loneliness and anger to be ineffective as a leader, however, I can assure you that I will not make the same mistake and I will stake my life for all of you." He said seriously. He took another deep breath again. "I and John, however, can't be here always. Not now anyways." The other's looked at him confused. "But, why?" Andrea asked sincerely. Lark let a warm smile flit to his lips, taking the others in surprise. Sulivan chuckled at the side, while John mirrored his happiness. "I have found my mate." He announced, "I did too." John interjected, pride swelled in their voices as they waited for their reaction. There were silence at first before the room was filled by congratulations and happy cheers. "Who are they? When did you met? Where are they? Why aren't they with you? Oh we want to meet them!" The two girls barraged them with questions, leaning forward to their leaders. The guys laughed at their enthusiasm. "Calm down." Lark commanded them and they did, after squealing to each other first. "They are at my mansion. They are the maids hired by Marris. And this is the important thing that I want to tell you." He said, the earlier happy mood has turned serious. "They are humans, that is why they are not with us." He revealed, it was a sudden news and just as he predicted, they were worried. "Both of them are humans, Sir?" Derek asked, astonished. "That's very rare." Sulivan mumbled out, the others nodded their head in agreement. Lark looked at John before turning to them. "That's true, that's why we can't bring them here yet. We have to protect them there, at least until they know about us." John supplied and they understood. "So you want us to protect them Sir." The youngest of the male answered, Jake's brown eyes was determined as he looked at his Alpha. Again, Lark nodded his head. "That's right. I want some of you to be posted near the mansion. But be careful, you are not to engage with any of them unless we introduced you. Also, make sure that the enemies don't know who they are." Lark said in a low voice, his eyes shadowed by his hair, making him look menacing. "You are the only ones who know about this and I want to keep it that way until they are ready. Not only is our pack targetted, but your Luna and Beta female are in danger as well." He stared at each of them, intensity crackling in the air. "Can I trust that you will keep, not only this pack but our mates safe?" He asked them and with a confident grin from them they answered, "Yes, Alpha!" Lark looked at them proudly. After that, they all started their meeting on how to improve security and their training plan. Lark had also chosen who would monitor the girls when they aren't in the mansion. Jake and Andrea was given the task and they were both eager to do it. John had suggested that they will be introduced as distant relatives so the girls won't find them creepy if they were discovered. And to help them keep a much closer eye on them. It was already late in the afternoon when they finished. Sulivan asked to stay for a bit when all of them are gone. John looked at him weirdly, unnerved by the young doctor. "Do not worry Alpha Lark, Beta John, I just wanted to commend these girls for making such drastic change in your wolf's disposition. Finding a mate is really a mysterious thing." He said, though confusion and curiosity is shining in his eyes. Lark grinned as he slapped his back. "You will understand it when you meet yours Dr. Sulivan, you're still young." Sulivan frowned and glared at him. "Alpha, I am only two years younger than you." He replied a bit pissed. John laughed, slapping the guy's back too. "Don't just use your head to understand, use your heart too." He advised. Sulivan grumbled something under his breath before excusing himself, saying that he still had to go back to the hospital. "Are you sure you trust him enough to let him know about our mates?" John asked Lark. The latter looked at his bestfriend and beta before shaking his head. "He already knew before we told them. He had realized it from my wolf's less aggressiveness." He told him and John made an "Oh" face making him chuckle. "Sulivan is a great guy. Talented and a genius, his loyalty is second to no one you know that." He said. John nodded his head. "He is a genius at his work but clueless when it comes to love. I wonder what his mate will be like." John said while snickering. After that, the two of them went back to the house to rest. Both wondering about their mates and the threat looming over them.
