Chapter 4

Nicholas’ POV I have never felt the weight of the responsibilities on my shoulders as much as I do now. Each step I took towards my office reminded me of how much damage had been done, because of someone’s incompetence. I had to untangle the mess, negotiate with clients, and salvage our reputation. ‘How could you let this happen? All you had to do was assure them of my competence.’ I rubbed my temple, feeling a headache coming. ‘Sir, I tried, but the conversation kept veering to your infidelity.’ Two knocks sounded on my office door. ‘Come in.’ I instructed after buzzing the person in. ‘Sir, I will be in your office soon. We should be able to maneuver the press however we want.’ ‘Find a solution.’ With that, I ended the call. What a world we live in. Just one night of fun has ruined the reputation I worked so hard to build. With the storm of my thoughts swirling, I begged myself to focus on the task at hand, which was a brief interview with my new assistant. Best I took my mind off this turmoil. Finally turning around, I was greeted by a sight that was as surprising as it was bewildering. It was her! My eyes remained glued to a spot, my grasp of real time long forgotten, until her voice brought my attention back. ‘Holy s**t, You?’ There, standing before me, was the girl I had met just last week, the one who had openly disrespected me. Her eyes widened in recognition, a mixture of surprise, anger, and fear dancing within them. I felt my anger begin to rise, and my blood starts to boil. ‘I can’t fire her, she’s good for the job.’ I whispered to myself. Just then, a devious plan popped up in my head. I would make her pay for what she did to me. No one disrespects me and gets away with it. Olive’s POV Just when I think things can’t get any worse, the universe surprises me. What are the chances that the same guy I tripped and spilled water on at the club would end up being my boss? Did he plan this? Has he been waiting to take his revenge on me all this while? ‘Gg…good morning, sir. I stuttered in fear, an action that made him smirk confidently. I refused to give him that satisfaction. ‘I am your new personal assistant, Olive Rivera. I was asked to attend a brief interview session with you before I begin my duties officially.’ I spoke confidently with my head high and my voice clear to prove I was not afraid of him. He moved from his place behind his desk and stalked towards me. I tried not to show any sign of weakness as he circled me like a lion preparing to lunge for his prey. ‘The fact that you didn’t yell the moment you walked into this room, and you’re still here means you are desperate for this job.’ He topped in front of me and looked straight into my eyes, our bodies too close for my liking. I was lost in the electricity in his eyes for a moment, until he dragged my upper arm forcefully and crushed my body into his. ‘You think you are some brave girl who can mess with whoever she wants without consequences, well, you aren’t.’ I could feel his breath on my face as he spoke and my heart raced in fear. ‘Please let go of my arm, you’re hurting me.’ I managed to let out in a low voice. His eyes moved briefly to where he held me and he let go of me so fast, I thought I burned him. His loud laughter pierced the silent room. ‘You know, I had so much on my plate, I didn’t even bother to look for a scumbag like you, but it looks like the universe agrees that you must be punished for what you did by delivering you right to my doorstep.’ I gulped in a large amount of air as I took in his features. He looked completely different from that day, like he had been poisoned with evil instead of rage. He looked vile and terrifying. ‘June will show you to your office. There, you will find your work tablet on your desk. Be present at the meeting by 9. I want you to take down minutes, and get ready for the field meeting, as well.’ He said in an authoritative tone like he wasn’t just mocking me a minute ago. Assuming that was all, I politely bowed my head and turned to walk away before he stopped me. ‘Wait.’ Already by the door, I turned back to hear what he had to say, only for me to bump into his chest. ‘You arrived by 8:30 this morning. I get to work by 6:30 am, so you should too. As my assistant, my responsibilities are equal to yours as well. Is that understood?’ ‘Yes sir. May I take my leave now?’ ‘It would be a shame for you to lose this job, wouldn’t it.’ I gulped loudly as his sinister smirk was back. ‘I apologize for what happened that day. I wasn’t in the best state of mind then.’ I mustered every atom of respect I had to offer a fake apology because I sure as hell am not sorry. ‘You apologize?’ He scoffed in disbelief. ‘Even if you were sincerely sorry, it's too late for any apology.’ He moved dangerously close to my face and stopped close to my ear. ‘I would make you regret you ever crossed my path. You have none to run to and nowhere to hide. By the time I am done with you, you will be truly sorry you ever came into existence.’ The feeling of his hot breath on my neck makes me tremble. E suddenly walked away and took his seat behind his desk. ‘Get out.’ I composed myself and walked out of his office. My heart was beating violently against my chest like I had just finished a marathon and I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding. As I leaned against his large whit e door, I could only think of one thing, what have I gotten myself into?
