“God knows I hate that stupid principal,” Amelia said to her friend. “Damn him! How could he set a night class for us?”
“I know you do, but you know what you did was wrong, right,” Laura replied, holding her friend's hand.
“Wrong?” Amelia snapped, pulling her hand away. “She started it! She was provoking me and I just gave her what she deserved.”
“But Amelia, you know Daniella's been sick,” Laura said gently. “You shouldn't have hit her back. That was not okay.”
“Why am I always the one at fault?” Amelia exclaimed, her voice rising. “No one ever sticks up for me. I'm always the bad one!”
Laura pulled her closer, “You and I know that's not true.” She said gently. “What you did landed Daniella in the hospital and she's in a critical condition. Now, your mom and dad have to foot the exorbitant bills which they can't afford.”
Amelia pulled away, “Whatever, she deserved what she got and I'm not going to be sorry for that.” She said and walked away.
Laura looked at her friend’s retreating figure. “Why is she so difficult?” She said to herself, sighing heavily.
Just as Laura was about to reach Amelia, a black sedan came speeding around the corner, heading straight for Amelia. Laura's heart skipped a beat as she watched in horror, frozen in place.
Amelia, oblivious to the danger, continued walking down the sidewalk, her eyes fixed on the ground. The sedan screeched to a halt just inches from Amelia's face, sending her stumbling backward.
Laura rushed to her friend's side, grabbing her arm to steady her. “Amelia, are you okay?” she asked, her voice shaking with fear.
Amelia's face was pale, but her eyes blazed with anger. “That i***t!” she exclaimed, pointing at the sedan. “He almost killed me!”
“Sorry, sweetheart. You should watch where you're going.” The driver said with a smirk on his face.
Amelia's anger boiled over, and she took a step forward, her fists clenched. “You think that's funny? You almost ran me over!”
Laura grabbed Amelia's arm, holding her back. “Amelia, don't. It's not worth it.”
But Amelia was beyond reason. She shook off Laura's grip and stormed over to the sedan, pounding on the hood. “You're going to pay for this!” she yelled.
“Ethan what's going on?” Someone said from the backseat.
The duo paused, “So someone was in the backseat all these time,” Amelia muttered. “Hey, you there,” She shouted, “Come out!”
“Don't you dare talk to my boss like that, you spoilt brat,” Ethan snarled.
“See what your goddamn driver did to me,” Amelia said, trying to see who the young man was, but the glass was tainted.
“Here, give them some money to sort their miserable selves,” The young man said, giving Ethan some money.
“You jerk!” Amelia screamed, trying to rush at him but Laura held her back.
Ethan threw the money at them, not minding Amelia’s rage. He put the car in gear and sped off, leaving Amelia standing in the middle of the road, fuming.
“This is all your fault!” Amelia shouted at Laura.
“My fault?” Laura asked, confused.
“Yes, your fault.” She said and walked out on her.
Ethan parked at a corner, watching the two friends. “You should have allowed me to run her over to death, boss.” He said.
Royal chuckled, “Nahh, not yet. I can't believe Dennis had the nerves to fool me. Well, he's in for a whole lot of trouble, because I'm gonna make him beg for death. Take me to my sister!”
“Okay boss,” Ethan replied and drove off.
A few minutes later, they arrived at Ospedale Cannizzaro hospital, a prestigious and expensive hospital in Taormina. Royal's concern for his sister's well-being was evident on his face.
As soon as they entered the hospital, Royal approached Doctor Giovanni, the doctor in charge of his sister's care. “How's my sister doing?” Royal asked, his voice firm but controlled.
Doctor Giovanni greeted Royal warmly. “Good evening, sir. She’s fine, just asleep.”
Royal’s eyes narrowed, his gaze piercing as he glared at the doctor. “She had better be,” he replied, his voice low and even. “I didn't pay you so she could die. I want to see her.”
Doctor Giovanni nodded hastily, gesturing down the hallway. “This way, sir.”
As they walked to his sister’s ward, Royal's mind was beating fast. He hated the condition he had seen his sister earlier. “Damn you, Amelia.” He grunted.
When they arrived at his sister’s room, Royal pushed open the door and stepped inside. His eyes scanned the room, taking in the sleek, modern equipment and the quiet beeps of the machines monitoring his sister’s vital signs.
His sister, Daniella, lay in the bed, her face pale and bruised. Royal's anger flared up again as he took in her injuries. The cancer was really dealing with her and Amelia just had to add to her pains.
“How long will she be asleep?” Royal asked Doctor Giovanni, his voice controlled.
“Not long, sir,” Doctor Giovanni replied. “The sedatives should wear off soon. But we need to keep her under observation for a while longer.”
Royal nodded, his eyes never leaving his sister's face. “I'll stay with her,” he said. “I want to be here when she wakes up.”
Doctor Giovanni nodded. “Of course, sir. I'll have a chair brought in for you.”
As the doctor left the room, Royal sat down beside his sister's bed, his eyes fixed on her face. “Wait in the car for me,” he said to Ethan who was standing by the door.
“Okay boss,” he replied and stepped out.
Royal looked at his sister's sleeping face. She was all he had left. The thought of losing someone again scared him to death.
“Oh Daniella,” he whimpered, tears streaming down his cheeks. He quickly wiped them off before someone saw him.
“I saw that,” Someone said.
He looked up and met his sister's gaze, “Pumpkin,” he said, leaning in to peck her on the cheek.
“I miss you, big bro,” she said, smiling faintly.
“I miss you more,” Royal said, his voice shaking.
Daniella tried to sit up, but he stopped her. “No, no, don't move,” he said “You need to rest.”
“I'm okay, big bro,” she said, sitting up. She looked at him, “Do you still have those nightmares?” She asked him and he shivered.
“Let's not talk about that, Dani,” he said, avoiding her gaze.
“You know you shouldn't be outside at night, your migraine would start anytime soon.”
“I'll be fine, Dani,” I'm controlling it.
She chuckled, “Same thing you said the last time. I don't want people seeing you in such a weak state, so just go home and come back tomorrow. Bye”
Royal looked at her, she was right. He could feel it already building up, but he wanted to stay with her. All the hairs on her head had gone off and it hurts him to know he can't do a thing about it. It was already worse by the time they found out.
“Take care of yourself for me, pumpkin,” he said and kissed her on the forehead before walking out.
As he stepped out of the hospital, he saw Ethan from a distance talking with someone he could recognize anywhere.
This wasn't the first time, nor the fifth time he's seen them together.
