An Aha Moment

CHAPTER 4 ✨Sophia✨ I opened my eyelids as Lila left the room. I had already woken up before she came into the room. I am so grateful for Lila’s help in my life. Without her intervention, I would be back in that abusive household. I tried helping her find Maya but she insisted I didn't which till this day remained a mystery to me. I can't believe I ignored my feelings that much. I never listened to my intuition and always thought it would get better by the time I got older, but it kept getting worse each year. The truths were right before my eyes yet I couldn't seem to grasp them. “Wait a minute.” “Overlooking the simple truth?” I muttered to myself, a realization suddenly dawning on me. There and then, everything clicked. I was having my aha moment. It all makes total sense now. I quickly removed the duvet from my body and hurried to my table where my dual monitor hacking rig has been set up. “The hex dump……how could I have been so stupid?” I quickly turned on my monitor and started typing swiftly on the keyboard as the glow of the LED keyboards added to the illumination of the room. My heart pounded in my chest as I sat in front of my glowing screens, my fingers were levitating over the keys. I had spent over a year trying to decipher the encryption of the hard drive and hacking into their system. I spent over a year working tirelessly, to breach the defenses of a powerful organization. I was on a mission that felt personal. I am sure there are other girls like me who are falling victim to these terrible things. I still can't believe that the people I thought were my family really tried to sell me into this. The secrets I kept on unveiling along the way, revealed a darker part of the world I could barely understand. I always carried a hard drive in the small purse wherever I went. That's why I am so grateful to Levi for taking it upon himself to bring the hard drive to me despite the inconvenience. I quickly connected the hard drive to my air-gapped laptop. I need to decipher the encryption and also gain access to their system as well as soon as possible. My air-gapped laptop needed some update which I started before turning my focus towards penetrating their system using my dual monitors. The contents of the hard drive are still unknown. I wonder what the contents are in there that require this level of encryption. I pray I find something tangible against them because the thought of them targeting innocent lives provokes me. I couldn't let them continue. I just couldn’t. I quickly initiated the brute-force attack. It was a traditional way of hacking but as we know with enough computing power even the most difficult passwords could be cracked. Mine had lines of code running down the screen like a waterfall as my system attempted all the possible permutations. I Time ticked on, then hours, but there was no such luck. I wasn’t surprised. This wasn’t going to be easy. The encryption was far more complex than I anticipated but I had other tricks in my arsenal. In turn, I changed my strategy and created a side-channel attack. This one was more elegant, it took advantage of the system’s vulnerabilities. Watching the power consumption and the electromagnetic leaks coming from the system I could find out something about how it worked on the specific functions – something that could give me the clue I needed to find the key. The attack was low profile in the sense that it was waiting for a breakthrough to occur. After that, I logged into the system’s SQL database. While most hackers never bothered to pay much attention to it, I understood that this was just the outer skin of the system. For instance, I could insert code directly into the database and therefore control the system from within. It was a gamble, but if I could locate a vulnerability in the system, the whole operation would come unstuck. Then it stuck to me. I could just use the X-dump as well. This was so crazy, because how did my mind escape all this? The hex dump and x-dump were very different from each other. During one of my leisure time, I created the x-dump with reference to the situation I had back then, not knowing it might be of great use now. The hex dump was one of the most basic tools in a hacker’s kit, even a beginner would think to use. I almost laugh at myself for resorting to this method but it's the only feasible option left. The update was completed and I quickly pulled up the hex dump of the system’s memory. I was still in a state of hesitation as the raw data began to fill up the entire screen. At first glance, it looked like a mess of letters and numbers. And then, there was x-dump—my most powerful tool x-dump was the last weapon I had up my sleeve. I turned my attention back to the dual monitor and began the program with a few simple words and saw as it entered the system’s security unnoticed. x-dump was my creation, a program that did not only analyze but dissected security protocols in less than a second. When other tools could not force the issue, xdump came through. It didn’t just open a c***k at the system—it dismantled it. When x-dump was initiated, I watched in awe as directories I hadn’t even considered started opening up, files transferring into my control one after another. Everything was spilling out in front of me now, the system helpless to stop me. Finally, it happened—a breach. The system had no choice but to give up its secrets. I smiled, my heart was pounding. Everything I needed was right there. I noticed the air-gapped laptop had completed the pulling up of the hex memory, gaining my attention. But then, I spotted it. It was a password in plain text. A key piece of information is kept hidden in raw data, left completely unencrypted. My heart sinks. I can't believe I spent so much time and energy proving my skills on fancy and advanced techniques, and the answer was sitting there buried in the code, in the most straightforward way possible. Finally, a year of hard work paid off.
