I am near a panic attack at this point. My mother has confessed a dark secret and I just discovered my best friends are actually my sisters. I feel the need to scream, run, and be anywhere but here, but I need to know why she did it. Why did she think keeping this vital piece of information from us would be such a horrible idea? We would have worked harder, been stronger, and have the sisters we wished we had. My feelings of anger and betrayal need to wait though. I need answers to my questions and the only way to get them is through listening to my mother's reasons.
"Who is Pandia?" Abeline asks.
"She is the daughter of the Moon Goddess Selene and the Lighting God Zeus. I saved her life and risked my own in the process. As a reward for my selfless act, the Moon Goddess gifted me the greatest gift of all, the honor of raising the most powerful witches to ever walk the Earth. About 2 months after I saved Pandia, the Moon Goddess appeared to me in my dreams. She said as a gift for saving her daughter, she would have me raise the daughters of the Earth and Death with the blessing of the Moon Goddess herself. The Moon Goddess told me that the Earth Goddess had the essence of you five already made, as she had no creatures on the Earth and was bored. When the Earth Goddess and Death God were together they created the strongest beings the world had seen at the time, witches. The witches were a gift to the Earth Goddess as the Death God had his children already in his Demons. When they split due to the Death God's infidelity, their children were forced to choose sides, which we call the light and dark witches. Before Earth and Death split, they created the strongest witches to ever be created, the Supreme Witches. The five witches are said to be the strongest and most powerful, meaning you five are all witch's leaders. We are to listen to what you five decide is best for us. Just like how the wolves and vampires have royalty, you are set to rule essentially as Queen and Princesses."
"Queen and Princesses? You've got to be kidding me!" Azar yells. "Leave you fairytales out of this or I am leaving."
"Azar Margaret you will do no such thing. I may not be your mother but you sure will treat me like one. Please continue Blair," Mildred curtly eyes daggers at Azar.
"Thank you, Mildred. As I was saying, you will be Princesses in your own rights, led by a Queen. Since the Spirit witches are the strongest of all of us, Avira will be Queen."
"Q-Queen? Me? I'm but a child myself. You expect me to rule over all of witch kind? We're being murdered by the dozen, and people expect me to lead them? This can't be happening," Avira begins pacing the floor panicking at the responsibility placed on her shoulders.
"Avira, I'm so sorry this is happening to you right now. I thought we might have another century to train you before you could take over, but our time has come to an end. We will buy you girls as much time as we can. Separate and keep each other safe. We will meet again one day. In Gaea (the Earth Goddess) we trust," my mother strongly states.
I'm in tears by the time my mother is done realizing my best friends, I guess I mean sisters, and I are princesses and Avira is our Queen. We are supposed to rule all of the witches in the world one day, but right now, we need to run. I looked to get my sister's opinions on where to run and as I looked around I made a terrifying revelation. "Uh, where's Aella?"
"Miss Blair, Miss Mildred, Miss Agatha, Miss Florence, Miss Mary, Miss Victoria, Miss Catherine, Miss Margaret, and Miss Elizabeth, you are all charged with the crime of witchcraft and sorcery. You will all be tried, immediately."
My heart dropped seeing the Reverend John walk into the room dragging Aella by her hair and she is holding Goldie the cat.
"Reverend John, this is ludicrous!" my mother cries out. "We have never committed any crimes, especially that of Devil's work!"
"My son would not lie. How dare you accuse my own child, a child of God, of lying! You are the spawns of the Devil himself! We the people of Hatfield Peverel sentence you all to death by hanging! We will meet in the town center at sundown for the punishment to be carried through. The witchcraft and Devil's work in our town will end tonight!"
The town's cheers make my heart sink to the pit of my stomach. When I look up and realize what our mothers are doing, however, it falls even further. I see their eyes glowing as they are aiming to create a distraction to allow us to escape.
"RUN!" is all I hear before I see the Reverend drop his grip on Aella and Goldie allowing the five of us to run and the cat following us. We manage to run for 2 hours before we all get tired and have to stop.
"We have to go back," Avira pants.
"We can't," Abeline's adrenaline wearing off. She chokes back a sob before looking at all of us. "They sacrificed themselves to save us. We cannot risk going back and being seen. We would be dishonoring them. We cannot let their last moments on Earth have been in vain."
"NO! We have to go back. We can't just leave them. We're their rulers! I'm their Queen! I'm supposed to protect them. Not the other way around," Avira begins to cry.
"We are the strongest witches alive. We can save them," Aella looks at us. "I got us into this mess by going to get Goldie. Now we need to go back and at least try."
"We need to hurry," I urge them. "We're two hours away in a full adrenaline-filled run away from home. And sundown is in 4 hours."
"Let's go," Azar states. She is the first out the door, followed quickly behind by myself and all my other sisters.
After getting lost, Avira cast a spell with Abeline allowing flowers and moss to grow guiding us back to the town center. When we notice we are 10 minutes out Avira stops us.
"Wait! I'll make a cloaking spell for us so that if we get noticed on our way out, we have a chance to escape. I'll make 10, one for each of us and one for our mothers. If this goes bad, run and never return."
"No, we're supposed to lead the witches of the world. How will we do that?" I asked her. "We should stay together."
"No, sister. If this goes bad, this falls on me and I can only take so much loss in a day. We should separate and grow our powers. One day we will reunite and form the Supreme Witches."
"How will we know when and where that is?" Azar asks.
"For some reason, I think we'll all know," Avira smiles at us. "I love you sisters. Let's go save our mothers!"
Avira quickly spells up the cloaking spell for us and we all take it in one horrid sip.
"That tastes horrible, but let us get our mothers!" we cheer.
We race towards our town quickly with not much time left until sundown. We finally see the town center in our sights when Avira suddenly stops on the edge of the woods. "No..."
**trigger warning: mention of violence**
"- we sentence thee to death. Any final words?" the Reverend asks our mothers with nooses around their necks.
"You will never find our girls. They will burn you to the ground," Mildred angrily glares at him and spits.
"You will regret that," the Reverend growls. "Kick the stools!"
"NO!" is the last thing I heard before I saw the chairs holding our mothers up leaving their feet and leaving their bodies dangling.
"We were too late," Avira sobs while my sisters comfort each other.
Azar gets up and begins to start fires at the house of the Reverend.
"Azar, what are you doing?" Abeline yells.
"Getting my revenge."
"We need to leave, now," Avira states. "Flee the country, never return. You will know when we need to meet again."
We hug each other one last time tears streaming down everyone's faces. The anger I feel growing the longer I stay in this town. We separate and run in different directions, off to start our own lives never knowing when we'll see each other again.
