Chapter 17

Golden morning sunlight streamed through the tall windows, spilling across the soft furs and blankets covering the bed, waking me gently from the deepest, most peaceful sleep I had ever known. For a moment, I lay still, gazing up at the carved ceiling, my mind still hazy with dreams and warmth, before every memory came rushing back all at once. The ceremony. The sacred bond. His confession of love. Damon. I turned my head slowly, and my breath caught instantly. He was already awake, lying on his side, propped up by one elbow, watching me with that look I was already learning to adore—soft, adoring, as if I was the most beautiful and precious thing he had ever laid eyes on. His dark hair was slightly messy from sleep, his face relaxed and open, completely free of the anger or hardness that once defined him. His golden eyes shone bright and warm, filled with a love so deep it made my heart ache in the sweetest way. “Good morning, my love,” he whispered, his voice low and husky, thick with sleep and tenderness. He reached out, brushing a strand of hair back from my face with a touch so light and reverent, as if I might break if he wasn’t careful. “I have been watching you sleep for nearly an hour. I didn’t want to wake you. I just… couldn’t stop looking at you. I still cannot believe you are here. That you are real. That you are truly mine.” I smiled, lifting my hand to rest it gently against his cheek, feeling the warmth of his skin and the strength of his jaw beneath my palm. “I am real. I am right here. And I am yours. Forever and always.” Damon closed his eyes for a brief moment, leaning fully into my touch as a soft, happy sigh escaped him. When he opened them again, they were glowing with pure joy. He leaned down slowly, pressing a soft, sweet kiss to my lips—slow, lingering, tasting of morning light and love and home. When he pulled back only an inch, he rested his forehead against mine, his breath warm against my skin. “Today marks the first day of our new life together,” he murmured, his thumb brushing lightly over my lower lip. “No more hiding. No more fighting. No more secrets. Today, we begin building everything we were always meant to be. Side by side. As one.” He sat up then, pulling me gently with him and wrapping a soft fur blanket around my shoulders to keep me warm, before standing and holding out his hand toward me. “Come. Everyone is waiting for us. There is an old tradition: on the first morning after the bonding ceremony, the new Alpha and Luna appear before the whole pack to receive their blessings and formally take their place as leaders. They have been gathered since dawn, preparing and waiting to see us.” I took his hand, letting him pull me gently to my feet. He wrapped his arm firmly around my waist, holding me close as we walked toward the large mirror on the wall. I looked at our reflection—me in my simple nightgown, hair loose and soft, and him, tall and strong, dressed only in dark trousers, his chest bare and marked with faint scars of his past, looking at me as if I were a queen. We looked so different, almost opposites in every way… yet standing there together, we fit perfectly. Like two halves of a whole. As if we had always been meant to stand exactly like this, united. “You are breathtakingly beautiful,” Damon whispered, pressing a kiss to my hair. “More beautiful than anything I have ever seen. And today… everyone will see it too. Everyone will know that you are the heart of this pack. That you are my heart.” He helped me dress with slow, careful hands, touching me only with reverence and love, guiding me into a soft, flowing gown in deep blue and silver—the official colors of the Blackwood pack. He wove fresh white roses into my hair, just as my mother had done the day before, and when he finished, he turned me to face him, his eyes shining with immense pride. “Perfect. You are absolutely perfect.” He took my hand again, lacing his fingers tightly through mine, and led me out of the room, down the grand staircase, and into the main entrance hall. The moment we appeared at the top of the stairs, the entire room fell into a respectful silence. Hundreds of pack members stood waiting—elders, warriors, families, and children—all turning their eyes toward us, their faces bright and smiling, filled with respect and joy. Then, slowly, one by one, they all bowed deep and low—honoring me just as much as they honored him. “Long live Alpha Damon!” someone called out loudly. “Long live Luna Elara!” another voice shouted. Suddenly, the whole room erupted into cheers, loud and wild and joyful, echoing through every corner of the manor, shaking the walls and filling the air with celebration. Damon stood tall and proud beside me, lifting our joined hands high for everyone to see, his face glowing with happiness and leadership. He looked every bit the great Alpha he was born to be—strong, powerful, commanding… yet gentle, kind, and completely mine. Marcus stepped forward then, his face shining with tears of joy, followed closely by my mother and Mara. Marcus placed a hand on each of our shoulders, his golden eyes warm and full of wisdom. “It is done,” he announced, his voice clear and strong for everyone to hear. “The bond is sealed for eternity. The future of our pack is secure. Damon, you are now Alpha in every sense of the word. And Elara… you are our Luna, our heart, our guiding light. Lead well. Love deeply. Protect this land, and each other, always.” He pulled us both into a strong, warm embrace, before stepping back to let my mother take his place. She hugged me tight, whispering how proud she was, how happy she was, and how beautifully everything had unfolded. Mara smiled, her wise eyes shining, and gave me a small, knowing nod, as if to say I told you so. Later that morning, after all the formalities and speeches had ended, Damon took me out riding—just the two of us—far away from the crowds and noise, deep into the forest, and up toward the highest hill in our entire territory. We rode in comfortable silence, hand in hand, the wind rushing past our faces, the trees flying by, and the sun shining bright above us. When we reached the summit, he helped me down from the horse, and we walked to the very edge of the cliff, looking out over our land. The view was breathtaking. Miles and miles of lush green forests, rolling hills, sparkling rivers, and wide open fields stretched out as far as the eye could see—all belonging to the Blackwood pack. Far below, we could see the manor, small and beautiful, surrounded by gardens and villages, the beating heart of everything we held dear. Damon stood behind me, wrapping his arms tightly around my waist, pulling me back against his chest and resting his chin on my shoulder, breathing in the fresh, sweet mountain air. “All of this,” he said softly, his voice carrying gently on the wind, “is ours to protect. Ours to nurture. We will make it a safe haven. A place where everyone is welcome, everyone is loved, and everyone truly belongs. And all of this is because of you. Because you taught me that true strength isn’t found in power or fear… it is found in love. In kindness. In family.” He turned me around to face him, holding me close, his golden eyes serious and sincere. “I used to believe my whole life was defined by this land, this pack, this title. I thought nothing else truly mattered. But now… I know better. None of it means anything without you. This land, this pack, this power… it is only worth having because I get to share it with you. Because I get to build a life here with you. Because one day… we will bring our children here. We will raise them here. We will teach them that love is the greatest magic of all.” My heart swelled, so full of love and happiness I thought it might burst. I reached up, wrapping my arms around his neck, pulling him down closer to me. “Children?” I whispered, smiling through happy tears. Damon grinned—that bright, beautiful smile that lit up his entire face, the smile I had fought so hard to earn. He nodded slowly, his hands resting gently on my waist, warm and possessive. “Someday. Far in the future. But yes. I want everything with you, Elara. Everything. A home. A family. A long, joyful life together. I want to grow old by your side. I want to look back on all this, years from now, and remember how far we have come… from enemies to strangers, from strangers to soulmates. And I want to thank every star in the sky, every ancestor, every bit of magic… for bringing you to me.” He leaned down, pressing a soft, sweet kiss to my lips—slow and deep, filled with every promise, every dream, every hope we now shared. “I love you,” he whispered against my lips. “More than the whole world. More than all the stars combined. More than life itself.” I smiled, standing on my tiptoes to kiss him again, the wind playing softly with our hair, the sun shining down upon us, and our whole future spread out at our feet. “I love you too, Damon. My Alpha. My husband. My everything.” As we stood there, wrapped safely in each other’s arms, looking out over our land, our home, our destiny… I knew. This was only the beautiful beginning. We had so much to do, so much to build, and so much love to share. There would be challenges ahead, hard days, and storms to weather… but none of it mattered. Because as long as we were together… we already had everything we ever needed. We had love. We had each other. We had forever. And that… was more than enough.
