The gift from karma

526 Words
It was dark The only source of light amidst the void was a ray of sun peering through the cracks of the door Bang   Bang   Bang Devon clung to the woman as she motioned him to be quiet. "I know you're in there! Come on out!" The young man can only imagine the commotion gathering around the shack as the man banged on the door again.  Dust from the ceiling came falling down with as the place shook from the man's force. Devon looked up to his guardian with hope and worry. He never asked how or why he was given to her, but the woman was open enough to tell him the truth when he turned 8. A bit too early for a child to sink in but in this town, innocence is not as common as it should be. Some children, the moment they learn how to run, are often used as minions for syndicates to steal and beg for alms. He was one of the lucky ones to have not experience such, so he wasn't devastated to find out about his father leaving him. Trisha was enough for him, he was contented knowing someone took him in. But Trisha was no saint. Way before she met his biological mother, she would sell her body for money. It didn't matter what they would do to her, so as long as she gets money. She would get into fights because of the wives of her clients. It wasn't long before she left and worked as a tailor. Trisha cursed as she thought that karma was out there to get her. She recognized the angry man to be one of her clients. After having a more decent job, she cut ties and tried to change her looks hoping they won't look for her. But alas, it was not as effective as she thought it would be. "Come out, you w***e! I'll pay you twice than before!" The young man was scared and whimpered.  "It's okay, honey. You stay here, I'll handle it." Trisha let go of Devon and with enough courage slowly strode towards the door. "There you are, miss me?" the barbaric man said as soon as Trisha opened the door "I'm no longer working as such. Leave" The woman said. The man was having none of it and quickly pulled her out. "Now listen here, wench. I haven't had a single good-" Devon panicked, he didn't want to hear the last word nor see her get hurt. He ran and threw the closest log he grabbed to the angry man. He was expecting the brute to vent on him, but he let go of Trisha the moment he noticed him. "Ah s**t. He's not mine, is he?" The man said as he backed away, obviously not wanting to deal with responsibilities and all. The people crowding the place soon subsided, not without blurting out words against her. Karma Punishment Trisha didn't care. The moment the man left she stood up and went to Devon, hugging him tight as she held back her tears. Karma was kind enough to leave an angel to save her.
