CHAPTER NINE : The Incident
The next day, North Ridge High felt different.
Not quieter, Not louder. Just heavier.
Amara could sense the stares before she even stepped into the halls. Her locker was untouched, but that didn't ease her chest tightening with dread. The video, the threats, the hooded figure - it all pressed down like snow on a fragile branch.
Ethan met her at the corner. "We need to be careful today", he said softly. "They're not messing around".
"I know", she whispered. But deep down, she didn't know.
By third period, the tension exploded.
The gym teacher, Mr. Daniels, barked orders during P.E, but the room was already chaotic. A ball flew across the court and hit someone not by accident. It seemed. A fight broke out between two other students, and in the confusion, Amara was shouted roughly into the bleachers.
She felt, twisting her ankle. Pain shot up her up her leg, but that wasn't the worst part.
A notebook slid from someone's hand and landed open beside her.
It wasn't any notebook.
It was Lucas's - the one he kept hidden.
And now, everyone could see it.
Her eyes widened as she saw the words written inside: Names, dates, events - secrets that should have stayed buried.
One page had her name on it. Not just written casually, but circled multiple times, underlined. Notes scribbled: too visible, risk of exposure, handle carefully.
Her throat went dry.
Someone laughed nearby.
"Looks like the new girl is part of the story now", a voice sneered.
Whispers erupted. Phones lifted. Cameras out.
Amara scrambled to grab the notebook, but it was too late. The room had already caught on.
Lucas's eyes found her across the gym, dark and unreadable. For a second, she thought she saw regret.
Then he turned away.
Ethan grabbed her arm. "We need to get out".
But the damage was done.
By the time the principal arrived, the gym was buzzing with rumors, phones recording, and Amara at the center of it.
"You", Ms. Turner said sharply, pointing. "Come with me".
Her legs felt like lead. She couldn't speak. she couldn't move.
Outside the principals office, her phone buzzed again.
Unknown Number.
Now you're tangled. And everyone will see what happens next.
Amara swallowed hard. The world has shifted under her feet. She wasn't just the new girl anymore. She was a target.
And for the first time, she realised just how deep Lucas's secrets went - and how dangerous it was to be near him.
