CHAPTER 7: The Mirror in the Code

897 Words
POV: VERA ㅤ The world stopped. Literally. ㅤ Because the Author’s system was rebooting, the rain froze mid-air. Falling leaves remained suspended in the sky. And the hand gripping my ankle... I could feel a strange, electric current pulsing through my skin. ㅤ I turned around slowly, my heart hammering against my ribs. ㅤ I was staring at myself. But this wasn't the Vera I saw in water reflections. This woman wore the original ball gown from Chapter 1—pristine, without a single bloodstain, her hair perfectly styled. But her eyes... they had no pupils. They were just blank, white voids, like two unwritten pages. ㅤ "Who are you?" I gasped, struggling to pull my leg free. ㅤ "I am 'Vera_Final_v1.doc'," she whispered. Her voice sounded like my own, but filtered through a broken, distorted radio. "I am the version that was supposed to marry the Prince. I am the version that followed the script. I am the 'Happy Ending' you destroyed." ㅤ "That wasn't a happy ending," I snapped, clutching the Fountain Pen. "It was a prison. An endless loop of misery." ㅤ "But I was alive there!" the other Vera screamed. Her face suddenly cracked like a porcelain doll shattering. "Because of your rebellion, the Author threw me into the Draft Bin! He erased my personality to give you a new 'edge'! I am the source of every pixel you own!" ㅤ Behind me, Arlo stood with his sword drawn. But he was staring blankly; he couldn't see who I was talking to. To him, I was shouting at thin air. ㅤ "Vera! What are you doing? Let's go while the system is still loading!" Arlo yelled. ㅤ "Don't you see her, Arlo?!" I pointed right in front of me. ㅤ Arlo shook his head. "I don't see anything but black smoke! Vera, you're hallucinating because of the pixels you're losing!" ㅤ That was when I realized. This "Third Vera" was a Hidden File. I was the only one who could see her because we shared the same Source Code. ㅤ "Thank you for opening the door," the other Vera smiled. Her fingers began to turn into black ink, merging with the ink from my Pen. "Now that the portal to the Real World is open, the Author just needs a 'Safe Version' to return the story to normal. And that’s me." ㅤ Suddenly, the Fountain Pen grew searing hot. The ink began to leak out, writing commands in the air beyond my control. ㅤ [ SYSTEM REBOOT COMPLETE ] ㅤ [ RESTORING CHARACTER: VERA (VERSION 1.0) ] ㅤ [ DELETING CHARACTER: VERA (GLITCH VERSION) ] ㅤ "No... no, you can't..." I fell to my knees. I could feel my legs dissolving. I was becoming transparent, fading into the background of the forest. ㅤ "Vera!" Arlo ran toward me, but his hand passed right through my shoulder. "What is this?! Why are you disappearing?!" ㅤ The other Vera stepped closer, her form becoming solid as mine turned into smoke. "You can't win against the Author's logic, Glitch," she whispered in my ear. "The Readers need a protagonist who is easy to love. Not a killer like you." ㅤ I looked up. The Author’s cursor reappeared in the sky, hovering over me, ready to click [ PERMANENT DELETE ]. ㅤ But before he could, new notifications exploded across the sky in glowing gold text. ㅤ [ NEW COMMENT from User_404: 'I don't want the perfect Vera. I want the Glitch. #SaveTheGlitch' ] ㅤ [ NEW COMMENT from Enhypen_Luv: 'Vera, use the ink on yourself! Rewrite your own destiny!' ] ㅤ The comments acted like a beacon in the darkness. I felt the weight of the Pen return to my hand. ㅤ "You can't replace me..." I whispered. ㅤ I aimed the pen not at my enemy, but at my own chest. "Because in this story... I am the one writing my own description!" ㅤ I drew a massive [ X ] over my heart. An explosion of black ink enveloped both me and the "Perfect Vera." ㅤ When the light faded, the other Vera was gone. But I was no longer my old self either. ㅤ I stood before Arlo. My hair had turned bone-white, my eyes glowed with flickering code, and my outfit was a jagged fusion of the royal gown and tactical combat gear. ㅤ [ CHARACTER UPDATED: VERA (THE AUTHOR'S NIGHTMARE) ] ㅤ "Arlo," I called out. My voice was no longer distorted. It was steady—the voice of someone ready to settle a debt. ㅤ "Let’s go. Let’s find the Author. I have something I need to delete from his notebook." ㅤ ㅤ POV: ARLO ㅤ I stared at the woman standing in front of me. She looked like Vera, but the aura she radiated was terrifying. She wasn't just a character anymore; she looked like the personification of every vengeful word ever written. ㅤ "Vera?" I whispered, almost afraid to touch her. ㅤ She didn't answer with words. She simply looked up at the giant eye in the sky, which was now blinking in confusion. The "Author's Nightmare" was no longer a title. It was a reality. ㅤ "Hold on," she said, grabbing my hand. Her grip was solid, stronger than ever. "We’re going to the Real World. And I’m going to make sure he never hits 'Save' again."
