Dave didn’t say a thing as he sat beside Drake on the bench by the lighthouse. And Drake didn’t say anything either for a long time. He gazed out over the dark ocean. “I’m sorry, Dave,” he said at length, “I didn’t want to bring that into your home.” Dave shrugged a shoulder, tucked his tongue into his cheek. “I know. But we did volunteer. How are you feeling now?” “Empty.” “That can be a good thing…” “I didn’t take it the right way,” Who would? Dave thought, wiping a blade of grass off his pants. “I’m embarrassed at how I acted. I don’t want to be that kind of man.” “Many years of pent-up anger.
