Chapter 3
Jack POV
The second my father’s eyes settled on Snow, the temperature in the hall shifted.
“You,” he said, pointing at her like she was something filthy on his boot. “Leave my pack before I decide to remove you myself.”
The words crashed into my chest.
Snow froze. I felt the fear surge through the bond instantly, raw and blinding. Her fingers trembled in mine. She didn’t look at me at first. She looked down, like she already believed him.
“My king,” she said softly, her voice barely holding. “If my presence is the reason for this chaos, then I will leave.”
The words felt like betrayal, even though I understood the fear behind them. She tried to pull her hand away.
I locked my grip on her wrist.
“No,” I said.
She turned to me, eyes wide. “Jack, they will kill you.”
I stepped closer until our bodies were almost touching. The noise in the hall faded. All I could hear was her heartbeat racing through the bond.
“If you walk out of this pack,” I said quietly, “I walk with you.”
Her breath hitched.
My father stepped forward. “You will not.”
I looked at him. “You no longer decide that.”
The hall erupted.
Snow tried to speak again but the sound drowned in the shouting. Nobles were standing now. Some were yelling. Some were backing away like fire had been lit between us.
“You will stay and you will reject her,” my father roared. “Now.”
Snow shook her head slowly. Tears slid down her face. “I never wanted this war.”
I lifted her chin with my fingers until she looked at me. “You are not the war. You are my mate.”
Her lips parted. The bond pulsed hard between us.
“Guards,” my father ordered.
Everything broke loose.
Metal began moving. The guards' Boots rushed in faster. The hall became sound and panic all at once.
I pushed Snow behind me as the first guard lunged. I struck him without thinking. He hit the floor and didn’t move. Another guard came fast. I felt Snow’s scream vibrate in my bones as I brought the second one down.
More were coming.
I grabbed her hand and ran.
We smashed through the side doors. The air hit our faces. Servants scattered in fear. I didn’t slow. My only focus was her grip in mine and keeping her breathing behind me. We ran down the hall without hesitation.
Suddenly as we ran she stumbled and I lifted her without stopping as guards shouted behind us. Arrows flew.
Snow suddenly started crying, my heart skipped and ached as her soft sounds against my shoulder broke me. “Jack please.”
“I will not lose you,” I said. “Not now. Not ever.”
We turned sharply and nearly collided with another group of guards. I shoved her behind a pillar and shifted before their eyes. Bones cracked. Fury tore from my chest. They fell fast.
I grabbed her again and moved.
We burst through the back passage into the open courtyard. Cold air hit us hard. Snow gasped.
Torches lined the walls. More soldiers ahead.
Snow stopped suddenly. “There are too many.”
I pulled her into my arms. “Then they will learn why the moon chose you for me.”
She looked at me then. Truly looked in fear.
“I never wanted to take your life from you,” she whispered.
“You didn’t take it,” I said. “You gave it meaning.”
The bond surged like fire between us.
We moved again but blow clipped my side. I staggered but didn’t fall.
“Jack!” Snow screamed my name,I turned and struck back.
My knuckles were already hurting, blood warmed my skin. It didn’t matter.
Snow cried out as if the pain was hers.
“I’m fine,” I growled, even as the world blurred.
We reached the far gates.
Locked.
Shouts filled the courtyard now. Dozens of boots thundered behind us,Snow pressed her palms to the gate and shut her eyes in desperation.
I stepped in front of her.
“This ends with me,” I said.
She grabbed my arm. “It ends with us.”
The gates exploded open.
Wolves poured in,not alphas but Rogues, my eyes widened, it was actually the first time werewolves had invaded to fight the Lycans and I caused it but my mate comes first.
In the midst of it all, I felt my father’s presence behind me like death breathing against my neck.
“You chose her over your blood,” he said quietly behind me. “You chose extinction.”
I turned slowly. Snow stood behind me. Shaking.
“I chose my mate.”
“Your mate has brought her people to fight us, son!” I growled and he watched the rogues at the entrance of the courtyard.
