(Aaron’s POV… Cont’d)
“No. No, she sure wouldn’t. Though I still want to help this young woman any way we can. The first order of business is getting her to shift so we can communicate with her, though.” My Dad said, letting out a heavy sign as he gripped my shoulder before turning to leave. “I’ll see if I can’t enlist your Mother’s help with that. Just keep a close eye on her for now. And don't tell a soul about any of this. That includes your girlfriend, son. The fewer people who know, the better.”
“You got it, Dad.” I said as I watched him leave. I didn’t like keeping secrets from Britney, though. But I also can’t go against my Dad’s orders. “So now we dog sit?” Blake joked as he made himself comfortable in a chair.
“I guess so. I’m going to go get us some food and stuff. Do you want anything specific?” He shook his head as he made himself comfortable in those hard hospital chairs. “Naww, I’m good with whatever you find. Thanks!”
I rolled my eyes at him. I loved the man like a brother, but sometimes his laid-back attitude is annoying. “Okay. I’ll be back as soon as possible then.” I told him as I left without giving him the chance to say anything more.
I wanted to head up to my room and talk to Britney face-to-face rather than over mind-link. I know she’ll be disappointed that I can’t stay with her but there’s nothing I can do about it. I just have to figure out what I’m going to tell her. I don’t wanna lie to her. But I also can’t tell her anything about our situation.
“Go back. We should stay with her. Protect her.” My wolf, Onyx, growled in my head. “Dude, she’s well protected right now. Besides, Britney is waiting for me. I can’t just leave her sitting there all alone all night without any explanation.”
“Mind-link her! You told Dad we would protect the she-wolf. We’re not supposed to leave.” I guess he did have a point about that. But this won’t take long, and I owe it to Britney to be upfront about my whereabouts. She is, after all, going to be my mate.
I heard Onyx grumble something inaudible in the back of my mind after thinking that, but I chose to ignore it rather than ask him to speak up. “Look, I won’t be any longer than I have to be. I’m just going to explain that my Dad has me on an important security job I’m not allowed to disclose to anyone and that I’ll be back when it’s over.”
I should probably grab some clothes and a shower while I’m at it too. But then again, Onyx might just blow a gasket if I take too long. I don’t know what his problem is. I know he likes Britney. If he didn’t I wouldn’t be with her.
“I never said I liked her. I said she seemed nice. Unlike you, I prefer to wait for my fated mate.” That had my feet faltering a little. “You never told me that before. You know I plan to mate with Britney when we are both eighteen. You should have told me this long ago.”
“I didn’t want to hurt you. I could see how happy she makes you and just resigned myself to accepting it.” I could almost hear the shrug in his voice. As if it didn’t matter. But it did, and does.
“Onyx, you shouldn’t have martyred yourself that way. Now you let me fall in love with a girl that I’ll always know you don’t love too. That’s bound to cause us problems down the line. Please, don’t ever do that again. We need to be honest with each other if we’re going to be a great team.”
I couldn’t believe he did that. I thought we were both on the same page with this. Now I find out we’re miles apart. “Let’s wait to see what happens on our eighteenth birthday. Maybe she’ll turn out to be our mate after all.” There was hope in his voice, though I highly doubt it could match my own. Because if she isn’t our fated mate, then we have a problem.
But that’s something I’ll need to think about later because I’ve just reached my room and I can hear my baby's voice from inside, “No, I’m waiting for him to get back now... Of course I know, I’ve been doing that for the last two years… No, no problem… Yeah, I’ll see you later.”
I opened the door and stepped inside as she finished her conversation. “Hey, babe. Who was that?” She was just putting her phone back in her purse and rolling from a lounging position on the bed onto her knees.
She tossed her purse onto the bedside table as she answered, “Oh that? Just Betsy wanting to go shopping later. But I told her I was waiting for you to come back before I made any plans. Of course, I’d rather spend my night right here.” She patted the bed with a s*xy little smile as she toyed with her hair.
My only thought in that moment was ‘h*ll yeah’ but then Onyx growled and I sighed as I said, “I wish I could. More than you know. But unfortunately my Dad gave me a top secret as*ignment. I only snuck away long enough to come talk with you. I have to get back before he notices I’m gone.”
The pout was instantaneous, which I knew it would be. “But you promised.” The childish whine in her voice was so endearing it made me smile warmly every time. “I know it. But Alpha’s orders are Alpha’s orders. I have no choice in the matter. I’ll make it up to you somehow.”
“How?” I paused for a second, my hand stretched towards my jeans I had on earlier. This was new. Normally she just said ‘okay’ and her eyes lit up with possibilities. Now her eyes were filled with accusation and something I couldn’t quite identify.
I told myself I was making too much out of it. That I’m just tired from a long day. Then I smiled tenderly as I said, “I promise, I’ll think of something. For now, why don’t you go shopping with Betsy. Take my black card.” I got out my wallet and handed it to her.
Her eyes finally lit up as she asked, “Limit?” I just shrugged. The card didn’t really have a limit but I also wasn’t supposed to over-use it, either. With that in mind I said, “I donno, a hundred-grand.”
She let out a happy little squeak, grabbed her purse, came over to kiss my cheek, and practically danced from the room without so much as a ‘goodbye’.
I got my clothes on, not thinking anything more about the exchange, and headed down to the kitchen to grab some food. Once I had a couple bags of snacks and some sandwiches packed up I headed back to the hospital.
I got there just as my Mom did.
(Unknown POV)
She was peeking at the furless wolf that was on the strange rock looking at another strange rock that sparkled like the sun. Whatever the strange rock was doing seemed to make him happy. Only instead of wagging his tail he did strange things with his mouth.
She tried to do what he was doing but couldn’t get her mouth to work that way. She was still trying when the odd cave they were in opened and two more furless wolves came in.
One she knew from before. The other, a she-wolf, didn’t. “Well, who do we have here?” The she-wolf on the bed tilted her head in a mixture of curiosity and confusion. She didn’t understand these wolves at all.
“I’m Alyssa, dear. It’s nice to meet you.” The new she-wolf said as she offered her hand for the she-wolf on the bed to sniff. The she-wolf didn’t know what this wolf was doing, but she sniffed at her hand anyway. She recognized the scent instantly and gave the paw a gentle lick of acceptance.
“I think I’ll take that as a good sign.” Alyssa said, her smile bright and calming. She reached out and ran her hand along the she-wolf’s head, just between her ears, as she spoke to the men in the room.
“So, I understand we need to get her to shift? Any ideas why she hasn’t yet?” Alyssa glanced at her son and Blake for an answer.
“As far as we can tell she doesn’t know how to shift.” Blake began only for Aaron to finish, “She also doesn’t seem to know English either.”
“Do you think she speaks another language?” Alyssa asked them while the she-wolf tilted her head to one side, then switched to the other as her eyes went to each one who spoke.
“No. I don’t. I think she doesn’t know how to speak at all, actually.” Aaron told his Mother. He looked over at the she-wolf, wondering what she was thinking. If he could figure out how her mind worked, maybe they could communicate with her.
She kept her eyes on the furless wolf with the nice scent. The others were nice but that one was her favorite. Though while he was making those strange sounds he was putting something on an odd rock that was flat and in the air. She didn’t understand how it stayed in the air that way but the wolf was putting something that smelled good on it.
Her head picked up and she watched him more carefully, his back to her. “The kitchen Omega’s made us some cold-cut sandwiches and I grabbed a variety of chips.” There was a sound that hurt her ears, making her cringe, but when it stopped she got to her paws and sat down, looking at the food.
“Umm, I think someone is hungry.” The furless wolf who chased away the bad wolves was making those funny sounds and looking at her. The nice smelling wolf and the she-wolf turned to look at her too. Then the she-wolf made the funny sounds again and held some food to her.
