Ch. 9: Daisy

(Aaron’s POV) “You’re just jealous because I’ve got my man already, and you’re still unclaimed. Your plain as* will probably always be unclaimed. Your mate won’t be able to tell if you're a guy or a girl.” Britney told her without skipping a beat in her story, all while laughing. I laughed at first too, but then I saw the pain that flickered in Jolene’s eyes before she could hide it. I love Jo-jo like a little sister. With Blake being my best friend, she was always just sort of part of the package, yah know? Besides, Jolene is really pretty. Especially when she dresses up for something. She just prefers to wear pants, or shorts, and a T-shirt because she hangs around with the guys more often than not, so there’s usually some sort of rough-housing going on. And being an elite warrior, she holds her own. She’s always been like one of the guys. So I didn’t think those kinds of comments would affect her like that. I can see now that I was wrong, and I wasn’t about to sit there and let someone hurt her like that. “Britney! Apologize.” I snapped, then turned to Jolene and said, “I’m sorry, Jo-jo. I shouldn’t have laughed. It wasn’t funny.” While I was apologizing, Britney was saying, “Why should I apologize for telling the truth? Everyone knows it’s true.” I turned to look at Britney, really look at her. Was she always like this? Finally, I merely said, “Because it’s mean, and wrong, and we should both be better than that.” She looked up at me now. For the first time since we left my suite, she was quiet and staring at me like I was the one who’d lost my mind. After a minute or so, I saw something flicker in her eyes. A kind of understanding, I think, because she lowered her eyes submissively, and quietly said, “I’m sorry, Jolene. That was insensitive of me.” It wasn’t exactly a grand gesture, but it would do. Jolene, who seemed genuinely taken aback by everything, just nodded as she said quietly, “It’s fine. No worries. I gotta get to training now anyway. See you guys later.” She got up and left without another word, but I could tell Blake was angry. Especially when he said, “I lost my appetite. I’ll see you upstairs.” Before I could protest, he was gone too. “Well, that was rude. But at least we get some time alone together, right babe?” I was watching Blake’s retreating back, not really paying attention to Britney, so I just intoned ‘mmhmm’ and absently lifted a fork full of food to my lips. Britney went right back to prattling on. Only now it was about her two friends, Alana and Maybele. Blake calls them her sidekicks. They’re alright. They hang out with us when the group is all together, but they are like most other girls in that they are constantly trying to hook up with future ranked members. Which doesn't make them bad, just sad. I never understood the concept of mating for rank. Maybe because I always knew I’d be Alpha. But honestly? I don’t think I’d care. As long as there was love. “Babe? Seriously? I’m talking to you.” Her annoyed voice brought me out of my thoughts and I smiled at her. “Sorry, babe. I just zoned a little. I’m tired.” Which is true, I am. But I also don’t care to have that conversation with her at the moment either. “Oh my poor baby. Why don’t you tell your Dad you need the night off, and I’ll fix you a nice… hot… bath.” She leaned in closer to my ear as she spoke, her voice dropping to a soft, seductive tone as her warm breath caressed my ear and slid down my neck. I had to bite back a moan when her hand slipped into my lap under the table, and she started to rub my rapidly growing bulge. “Somebody likes the sound of that, I see. If you’re a good boy I’ll even give you a message.” D*mn, she is really making this difficult. But there is no way in h*ll my Dad is going to let me off protection detail just to go have s*x with my girlfriend. He’d just argue that ‘if she’s going to be your Luna, she’ll have to learn to get used to things like this’. He’s great for saying stuff like that, since he and Mom don’t really like the idea that I won’t even try to find my fated mate when my birthday comes around. We’ve gone round for round over it multiple times now. They respect my decision, but they’ve made it clear they don’t like or agree with it. “I wish I could, babe. But I’ve got to get back. I’ll mind-link you when I’m done, okay?” I kissed her on the forehead, wishing I didn’t have to leave her, then started to get up from my seat as she said, “Don’t bother. I’m going home for the night.” I felt bad, but what could I do? (Unknown POV) While Aaron was having his dinner, Alyssa was upstairs trying to figure out what to do with this she-wolf. She’d managed to get the girl into their spare bedroom so she was now rolling around on the soft mattress of the king-sized bed like a puppy in a leaf pile. “Okay, let’s get you bathed and try to tame that hair.” Alyssa said, not really expecting a response, then mind-linked some Omegas to come assist her. While she waited for them, she puttered with finding some clothes for the she-wolf. She couldn’t live in Aaron’s T-shirt, after all. “There you are, my love. How are things in here?” Ashton inquired as he raised a curious brow at the she-wolf who’d stopped the second she heard his voice and was now kneeling on the bed watching him. The she-wolf didn’t have the words for what he had in his big paws, but she knew she liked them. They were little things that grew in places where the trees are less and look like the sun. She liked the sweet scent of them, but she also liked the sweet taste of them too. “I, uhh, I brought you some daisies for your table. Though, she seems pretty enamored with them, doesn’t she?” Ashton moved the flowers around and watched as the she-wolf’s eyes followed, head and all. “How lovely. I’ll put them in some water. Maybe we can leave them in here for our guest to enjoy.” Alyssa told him, taking the flowers and kissing him in thanks. Thankfully, there was already a small vase in the room, so all she had to do was arrange the flowers properly. “And to answer your previous question, things are going well. The boys and I are going to try to teach her to walk tonight. I’ve sent them down to get dinner while I get her bathed.” Alyssa was moving all around the room as she spoke and the she-wolf’s eyes followed her everywhere she went. Her eyes remained fixed on the flowers though she tilted her head curiously when Alyssa began to put them into the vase. This obviously made no sense to the she-wolf, though Alyssa was paying more attention to her own actions than to the she-wolf’s at the moment. “Well, I only came up to let you know that Alpha Green has gone back to his pack. I’m sure he caught some of the whispers about our newest pack member, but he didn’t mention her, so I didn’t either. Let’s just hope he’s not up to anything.” Alyssa spared her mate a glance as she said, “We can hope all we like, Ash. You know that b*stard is up to something, though. He wouldn’t have come here if he weren’t.” “I know, my love. But we can still hope.” Ashton said, kissing her on the forehead before adding, “I’ll be in my office if you need me.” The she-wolf watched the Alpha go, wishing he could understand their odd language. And then she watched the Luna go into another cave, leaving the delicious-looking pretty things standing in whatever kind of rock that was. Well, if the Luna didn’t want the sweet treat, then she sure did. So she crawled over to them, pulled them from the rock, then started eating them, a huge smile forming on her lips. They were just as sweet as she remembered. From the bathroom, Alyssa called to her, “You know, we really should try to figure out your name. We can’t just keep calling you ‘she-wolf’ all the time. Do you have a name, sweetie?” Alyssa came back into the room while drying her hands on a small towel. She took one look at the she-wolf and squeaked, “Oh sweetheart, no! You’ll make yourself sick eating those.” She grabbed for the daisies, but the she-wolf pulled them away. Alyssa got ahold of the stems and tried to pry them free from the she-wolf’s grip, but they just wound up wrestling over them, the poor followers quickly wilting under the as*ault. Of course, her trying to take them away only made the she-wolf hurriedly shovel the bright yellow buds into her mouth and chew on them like a cow eating hay. She even had yellow petals all over her lips and chin. “No, no. No! Don’t eat that!” Alyssa kept saying, but the she-wolf just kept munching away. “Luna? Are you alright?” Lani, one of her personal maids, asked as she stood in the doorway looking aghast at the sight of her Luna, on the floor, wrestling flowers away from this wild child. Breathless, Alyssa sat up and pushed her hair back into place as she answered, “I’m fine, Lani. Would you please get a bath ready for this young lady?” Lani looked from her Luna to the girl who was slowly bringing the flowers back to her lips and taking a bite like she was trying not to be noticed, then back to her Luna again before saying, “As you wish, Luna.” Lani walked over to the she-wolf, took the flowers from her hand, and handed her a piece of chocolate from her pocket, quickly showing her how to open the wrapper. Then she handed what was left of the flowers back to Alyssa as she said, “I’m sorry about the flowers, Luna. I’ll pick more for you when we’re done here.” Alyssa just smiled with gratitude towards her maid, then let out a deep sigh when she looked over at the she-wolf and saw all the chocolate now smeared on her face along with the flower petals. Though as she watched the petals slide down the girl's neck, she smiled and said, “Daisy. I think we’ll call you Daisy.”
