Ch. 2: The Chase

1748 Words
(Unknown POV) In the stillness of the evening, where day fades into night, a sleek wolf with grey fur so light in color it was nearly white crept through the underbrush. She had been sneaking away from her pack every few days to meet her new, mysterious, friend. She had no idea what he was. A wolf that walked on his back legs and had no fur except for the top of his head. She wondered how he stayed warm out here all alone with no pack and no fur. All he had was that strange cave he lived in and something covering his body. He was a funny sort of wolf. He put his food in fire, lapped his water from a little rock, and made the strangest sounds with his mouth. She had no idea what pack would make those sort of noises. They weren’t howls or growls or even whimpers. They were something else. Something she couldn’t seem to do. No matter how hard she tried. The day had turned to night many times since the last time she went to see him. But tonight she meant to find him and hoped to get a meal out of it too. She was happy, excited about seeing her friend. But when she got close she heard something that made her approach more cautiously than usual. “Where is she, old man!?” A new furless wolf shouted, but the she-wolf now hiding in the brush, didn’t understand a word. All she understood was the anger radiating from the wolf and the fear coming off her friend. “I told you, I don’t know what you’re talking about. Now please, go away and leave me alone!” Her friend didn’t raise his voice, and the she-wolf didn’t know what to do. The bad wolf wasn’t alone and she didn’t know if she could take down three full grown male wolves on her own. She couldn’t call out to her pack. They’d be no match for these wolves. Not with the power she felt coming off of them. “You’re lying, old man! But it doesn’t matter. I know she comes to you so all I really need to do is wait for her to show up. I don’t even need you for that.” The bad wolf did something with his hand, pushing it into her friend and pulling it back with something in it. The she-wolf watched with sorrow as her friend's eyes went blank, and he sunk to the ground, falling over in a heep. Out of fear and panic, she hurriedly backed up and accidentally stepped on a twig, causing it to snap. Not knowing what else to do, she turned and ran off before the bad wolves saw her. “Go see what that was.” The leader told one of his men as he wiped blood from his hand onto the old man’s clothes. “Hey! I got paw prints! Big ones!” The leader's head snapped up, his gaze flying to his partner as he said, “Follow them! It might’ve been her! And remember, do not harm her! The boss wants her alive and untouched!” “Yeah, yeah!” The partner lamented as he shifted and began to follow the tracks. It didn’t take him long to catch her scent and the three bad wolves were chasing after her full pelt. But she was fast. Faster than most wolves. Which meant they were lagging behind a little. It wasn’t until two more of them joined in, coming in from head of them on the path, that they were able to try and box her in. When they caught up to her she was in a small clearing that was soaking wet and muddy from a fast moving thunderstorm they’d had about an hour prior. The leader wasn’t worried about the mud, though. He was now confident they’d have her bagged tonight and this Goddess forsaken job would finally be over. “Joe, you pounce first, try and push my way.” The leader said and the wolf to his left nodded, repositioned himself, then pounced at the she-wolf. She didn’t know what to do. They were all around her now. She had to get away somehow. But she was smaller than they were, which felt strange to her. So she just sat there, crouched into a tight ball and shivering in fear. When the wolf pounced at her she was so startled that she jumped high in the air and the wolf hit the muddied ground and went sliding into one of the other wolves, knocking him over. She came down in the same spot and cringed, watching the collision. Though that didn’t last long because another of the wolves tried to pounce on her, and she saw him move from the corner of her eye. Only this time, she flopped down and covered her head with her paws, so the wolf went sailing over her, hit the muddied ground, and slid into his two friends who were just regaining their feet. When she peaked through her paws and saw what happened, she jumped up, turned around, and ran through the area those wolves were no longer in. It didn’t take long for the bad wolves to begin hunting her again. This time, though, she just ran in a straight line for as long as her legs would carry her. Her legs were just starting to burn from exhaustion when she felt an odd sensation tickle her fur but she paid it no mind. The bad wolves were gaining her now so she couldn’t stop, even for a minute. That’s when it happened. Her front paw buckled and she went down. She jumped right back up again and started to run, but it was all the time the bad wolves needed to catch up. So as she started to run again, she felt a fiery pain in her hind leg as teeth clamped around it. She knew she was dead. Her last thoughts were of her pack as she wondered who would protect them now that she was gone. The bad wolf let go of her leg and the one that made the funny sounds came closer. “Shift! I’m not carrying you around like this, b*tch! Shift!” She had no idea what those sounds meant so she just looked at him, confused. The now furless wolf pulled back his front paw, ready to bring it down on her, and she braced herself for it. But it never came. Just in that moment a whole pack of wolves came and chased the bad wolves away. One stayed by her, leaning down to look at her. “Are you hurt? That looks bad. If you shift back it’ll heal faster.” Again, she had no idea what that strange barking meant. “I’m Blake. I won’t hurt you, I promise. Can you tell me what they wanted with you?” He reached for her leg and she growled at him so he put his hands up in surrender. The pain was awful and she whimpered before starting to lick the wound in an effort to heal it. (Aaron’s POV) “We have to get back, babe. I have training this afternoon.” I brushed a lock of her dark brown hair behind her ear as I smiled up at her. Britney is my world. I’d do just about anything for her. “Awww. Can’t you get someone else to do it? I wanna spend more time with you.” She was adorable when she pouted this way. “I wish. But you know I can’t. Besides, we spend all day together in school and all night together in my room. A few hours apart won’t hurt us. It’ll make you happier to see me later.” I chuckled. She knew I was teasing her so she just smiled at me. “Well, just one more round then?” She slid her still naked body onto mine and was just leaning in for a kiss when I said, “Now that I might be persuaded to accommodate you for.” My arms went around her and I pulled her closer just as I got a mind link from my future Beta. “Alpha, we got rogues within our borders. South side. We’re already en route.” “On my way!” I answered back with a growl before abruptly ending the kiss. “Sorry, babe. I gotta run. Rogues. Get to the packhouse as quickly as you can, okay? No dawdling.” I was already rolling to all fours as I spoke and as I shifted I added, “Can you take my clothes back with you, please?” She nodded, concern in her eyes as she said, “Be careful, babe. I’ll be waiting.” It was my turn to nod but I waited a minute till she was dressed and walked her halfway back to the packhouse before splitting off and running towards the southern border. I got there just in time to hear Blake trying to convince someone he wouldn’t hurt them. So when I heard the growl, I was ready to rip someone’s head off. I came around the tree like I meant business, expecting to find a nasty-smelling rogue only to be shocked to find a wounded she-wolf curled in a defensive ball, licking her open wounds. The wolf was covered in mud and dirt, but other than that one wound, seemed fine to me. “This was the big intrusion?” I asked, my voice incredulous as I looked at Blake, then ducked behind a tree to shift and put on a pair of shorts while he explained, “No, Alpha. When we arrived on scene, the rogues were attacking her. Her paws, all four, are bleeding. Likely due to running long distances. So I’m thinking they chased her for a while before finally catching up with her here. The warriors went after the rogues. I stayed back with her.” “Shift!” I demanded in my Alpha tone, but she just kept licking her leg. “Okay, how is she unaffected by that?” I looked at Blake, who shrugged as he said, “I tried the same thing a few times. She doesn’t seem to understand what I say either. Even basic things, she shows no recognition or understanding. Watch…”
