Chapter 7 Zoe stood on the deck of Seafarer, the Reef Centre’s nifty little runabout. Bridget was lowering what looked like a four-pronged grappling hook into the ocean. ‘Won’t that damage the coral?’ asked Zoe. Bridget pointed to the red buoy bobbing beside the boat. An improbable thing to see in this vast expanse of ocean. ‘That buoy marks this as a designated anchor point, a bare rocky spot. We dive here all the time. And anyway, I’m using a specially designed reef pick that won’t do much harm.’ ‘Confession time,’ said Zoe. ‘This is my first time on the Barrier Reef.’ Bridget looked up with a disbelieving expression. ‘Where did you learn to dive?’ ‘In Sydney Harbour, just last year.’ It was the only place Zoe had ever dived.
