Then she gave a stifled scream as the men started to carry her up the rickety stairs.
They did so clumsily, but there was nothing at all she could do.
She was afraid that the men might drop her and she would fall from the top to bottom and be injured and even break a leg.
Then she became aware that they were carrying her across a room and that her arms were being tied onto what she thought must be the side of a window.
She wanted to scream out and scream again, but she knew that it would be quite useless.
She felt stifled by the heaviness of the blanket that was over her head and which had not been removed when they carried
