Elena glanced at the clock as it was almost midnight ,and Nathan still wasn't back. “It looks like he won't be coming home tonight,” she thought.
Her heart dropped with the thought of Nathan not coming home as she walked towards her bedroom.
Just then there was a sound of a soft click that came from the front door and her heart lifted as she rushed back towards the door. “Nathan you are back.”
Nathan was dressed in a dark coat and his tall figure looked even more handsome in the chilly winter. The moment he saw Elena, he said, "Elena I have something to tell you.”
Elena froze, and her intuition told her that something was wrong with Nathan tonight. But she placed her hands on her belly and smiled.
“I also have something to tell you. I cooked your favorite meal, why don't you eat first, then we can talk about it later."
“Aurora is pregnant, I want a divorce!"
"What?"
Elena swallowed painfully and her smile vanished. It felt as though a heavy hammer had struck her and she stood there in shock and disbelief.
Nathan went on, "She is already four months gone. I promised Marcus that I would take good care of her and I can't break my word, not because of you. You have to give up your position as Mrs. Husdon which you have been holding for five years now."
Elena felt a sting in her eyes but she tried to hold back the tears. "Please Nathan, you can't do this to me.”
"I have been faithful to you, I gave up everything for you even my career and now Aurora is pregnant for you, not only that you also want to divorce me. The five years I spent as your wife didn't mean anything to you?"
Nathan's face changed with anger and he looked at her without any emotion. "It meant nothing to me Elena, you know I never loved you and I never will. Now that Aurora is pregnant I finally have a reason to get rid of you.”
The tears Elena had been struggling to hold back finally rolled down her cheeks. She knew Nathan had never loved her but hearing him say it, and straight to her face, broke her heart into countless pieces.
"I won't give you the divorce." She said, wiping the tears from her face and sniffing.
Nathan's expression turned grim as he walked towards her. He gripped her hand tightly and she stiffened in pain.
"You're hurting me Nathan.”
"I will make your life miserable and unbearable if you refuse to leave. My grandfather isn't alive to save you from my anger anymore."
Just then his phone rang and he let go of her hand. He took it out of his pocket, answered the phone, and his expression changed drastically after a few seconds.
"What did you say? Aurora had an accident?”
"Take her to the hospital immediately. Im on my way there. Make sure nothing happens to her and the baby." He ended the call and hurried to leave but Elena grabbed him immediately.
"Where are you going? It's already late and you still want to go to Aurora? No you can't go."
Nathan immediately pushed her away from his front and she fell hard on her butt "Aurora had an accident. Do you expect me to sit back and watch her die knowing fully well she is carrying my child? Elena, don't you have a heart?”
After he finished talking, he pushed the door open and walked out. Elena's heart sank, and all the pain she had been holding inside for years suddenly burst out.
She ran after him and shouted. "I am your wife, Nathan, I would not just sit back and watch you leave to another woman without reacting?
Nathan stopped, and what he said next completely shattered her "Have you forgotten how you became my wife? I was forced into marrying you. If it weren't for you back then, Marcus wouldn't have died. I have tolerated you for three years. The only reason I didn't send you to jail was to protect the reputation of both our families."
The memories of what happened in the past came rushing back, and her face instantly turned pale.
Five years ago, Elena was preparing to marry into the Hudson family when news came that Nathan had been involved in an accident and Marcus lost his life trying to save him.
Afterward, every piece of evidence seemed to point toward her, claiming that she had deliberately tampered with the car to cause the accident, but due to lack of sufficient evidence the prosecution did not bring charges against her. She believed this would prove her innocence, but she later realized that Nathan never believed her.
Elena's heart slowly sank as tears rolled down her eyes. "I didn't kill Marcus, I have told you this countless times. And you know how deeply I love you, why would I tamper with your car? Don't you think this is absurd?”
Nathan sneered at her. "It is absurd and I foolishly followed my grandfather's wish and went ahead to marry you, but do you know what I was thinking?”
"I was thinking about when you would die. Do you know how disgusted I have felt every time I looked at you over the past five years? Whenever I see you, all I can think about is how Marcus died. I wish you would go to hell and join him.”
Elena stumbled backward in disbelief. Suddenly, all the coldness and disgust Nathan had shown her over the years came rushing back to her mind. She had never understood the reason behind it, but now she finally knew the truth.
"So... this is what you really think about me? You believe I'm a murderer, for the past three years I have been explaining everything to you, and you still refuse to believe me?"
"Yes!" Nathan answered without a second thought. "To me, you are nothing more than a clown, I feel disgusted and you are not even worthy of my hatred. Because hating you would only make my hatred feel cheap.
Elena trembled uncontrollably and her body completely gave way. They had been married for five years, and she had always known there was a wound buried deep in Nathan's heart. She believed that with more effort, she could earn his trust even if she could never make him love her, at least they could maintain a respectful relationship.
"I understand now, So this is how you see me. Nathan, all these years, it wasn't you who misunderstood me, but I was the one who misunderstood you."
Tears streamed down her cheeks, and her body shook with pain.
Nathan's eyebrows furrowed slightly and for a moment, his heart seemed to soften.
But the next moment his phone rang again.
"Mr. Hudson, when are you coming? Miss Aurora is bleeding, and the baby might not survive.
