Chapter 6: Rising Popularity and Pressure

1154 Words
The first time Lexi saw her mural on the cover of Urban Vibes, she thought it was a joke. The magazine had been casually slipped into her mail slot, and it wasn’t until she poured her morning coffee that she bothered to flip through it. And there it was—her mural, front and center, with the headline: "The New Face of Urban Art: Alessia Thompson’s Vision Takes the City by Storm." Lexi stared at the page, her coffee forgotten. The swirling colors and bold strokes of her mural practically leapt off the glossy paper, accompanied by a short profile about her background and the commission at Eclipse. Her phone buzzed on the counter, snapping her out of her daze. “Hello?” “Don’t you ‘hello’ me!” Sam’s voice practically crackled through the speaker. “Why didn’t you tell me you were going to be on the cover of a magazine?” “I… didn’t know?” Lexi said weakly. “Didn’t know? Girl, you’re famous now! Everyone’s talking about you.” Famous. The word hung in the air like a foreign object, strange and unwelcome. “I’m still me,” Lexi mumbled. “This doesn’t change anything.” “Uh, it changes everything,” Sam corrected. “Do you know how many people dream of being where you are right now? You’ve arrived, Lexi. Own it.” Lexi didn’t feel like she’d arrived anywhere. She felt like she was standing on the edge of a very tall cliff, staring down into unknown depths. --- By the time Lexi arrived at her studio, the phone calls had started. Art collectors, journalists, even a gallery curator—all wanting to meet her, buy her work, or commission their own murals. Lexi had always dreamed of recognition, but now that it was here, she found herself overwhelmed. She slumped into her chair and stared at the mural sketch she’d been working on. The lines and colors felt distant, like they belonged to someone else. Her thoughts were interrupted by a knock at the door. Before she could answer, Julian stepped inside, his tailored suit immaculate as always. “Busy day?” he asked, glancing at the stack of messages on her desk. “You could say that,” Lexi muttered. Julian raised an eyebrow. “You don’t sound excited.” “It’s just… a lot,” she admitted. “I never thought this would happen so fast. One minute I’m just another artist trying to pay the bills, and the next, everyone wants a piece of me.” Julian’s expression softened. “Success can be overwhelming, especially when it comes all at once. But you’ve earned this, Lexi. Don’t let anyone make you feel otherwise.” His words were meant to be comforting, but they only added to the storm brewing in her chest. Julian made everything sound so simple, but he didn’t understand what it was like to suddenly be thrust into the spotlight. “Easy for you to say,” she muttered. “You’ve been in the spotlight your whole life.” Julian’s gaze darkened, and for a moment, Lexi thought she’d said too much. “It’s not as easy as it looks,” he said quietly. “Trust me.” Lexi wanted to ask what he meant, but Julian’s expression had already shuttered, his walls firmly back in place. --- Over the next few days, Lexi threw herself into her work, trying to block out the noise of her growing fame. But the calls kept coming, and the pressure to live up to the hype was suffocating. Sam, ever the optimist, insisted on celebrating Lexi’s success with a girls’ night out. “You need a break,” Sam declared, dragging Lexi to a trendy rooftop bar. “You’re too young and too talented to be stressing like this.” Lexi wanted to protest, but the warm evening air and Sam’s infectious energy were hard to resist. As they sipped cocktails and watched the city lights twinkle below, Lexi found herself relaxing for the first time in days. “So,” Sam said, leaning forward with a sly grin. “What’s going on with you and Mr. Tall, Dark, and Brooding?” Lexi nearly choked on her drink. “What? Nothing!” “Uh-huh,” Sam said, clearly unconvinced. “Come on, Lexi. You two have been spending all this time together, and you’re telling me there’s no spark?” Lexi hesitated. There was something between her and Julian—something electric and unspoken. But putting it into words felt too risky, too real. “It’s complicated,” she said finally. Sam rolled her eyes. “It’s always complicated with men like him. But don’t let that stop you. Life’s too short to play it safe.” Lexi wanted to argue, but deep down, she knew Sam was right. --- A week later, Lexi found herself back at Eclipse for another meeting with Julian. The mural was complete, but Julian had insisted on showing her the final lighting adjustments before the grand opening. The club was buzzing with activity as staff prepared for the big night. Lexi followed Julian through the dimly lit space, her eyes scanning the vibrant mural now fully illuminated. “It’s perfect,” Julian said, his voice filled with quiet admiration. Lexi felt a surge of pride. Despite the chaos of the past few weeks, she had created something that truly felt like hers. “Thank you,” she said, turning to face him. “For trusting me with this.” Julian’s lips curved into a rare smile. “You’re welcome.” The moment stretched between them, charged with unspoken words. Lexi’s heart raced as Julian took a step closer, his gaze locked on hers. “Lexi—” “Mr. Saint Clair!” The spell was broken as one of Julian’s assistants appeared, looking flustered. Julian’s expression hardened. “What is it?” “There’s a situation with the sound system,” the assistant said apologetically. Julian sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I’ll take care of it.” He turned back to Lexi, his gaze lingering. “We’ll talk later.” Lexi nodded, watching as he disappeared into the crowd. Her chest felt tight, a mix of frustration and longing swirling within her. --- Later that night, Lexi returned to her studio, desperate to clear her mind. She picked up a brush and began painting, letting the colors flow without thought or intention. As the hours passed, the image took shape: a swirling mix of light and shadow, vibrant yet haunting. It reminded her of Julian, of the parts of him she understood and the parts that remained hidden. When she finally stepped back to look at her work, she felt a sense of clarity she hadn’t felt in weeks. Maybe she didn’t have all the answers, but for now, this was enough.
