Chapter 2 Unexpected Reunion

1147 Words
Just as Mrs. Johnson returned, she happened to witness Evelyn being protected by an elegant man. She immediately recalled her husband's advice and quickly jogged over. "Mr. Kane, you're right. Sorry for the embarrassment." After speaking, she separated Ethan and then gave Evelyn a fierce glare. "Hmph, I'll deal with you later!" "Vivian, come on, I'll take you to change clothes," Mrs. Johnson called out a few times before Vivian snapped back to reality. As Vivian walked, she kept looking back, her attention fixed on the man from earlier. The man was exceptionally handsome; even the highly praised Ethan seemed ordinary in front of him. Moreover, judging by Mrs. Johnson's attitude towards him, she realized his identity was extraordinary. 'If only she could be by his side.' Vivian's cheeks flushed slightly, but she quickly returned to normal. Evelyn watched the backs of the departing group, her eyes clouded with gloom. Just as she was about to thank the young man who had helped her, she met a pair of teasing eyes. 'William Kane?! Why is it him?! Wasn't he abroad? Why is he back in the country...! Could it be that he's back to ask for the maintenance fee?!' Three years ago, the immense pressure was suffocating for Evelyn, and her condition was very poor. She knew that if she continued to push herself, it would only lead to her early demise. So, Evelyn applied for a study opportunity abroad and enjoyed a brief half-year of ease. It was during that half-year that she met William and made him her canary, in the truest sense. During that time, Evelyn finally found her true self, but she knew she couldn't escape her responsibilities forever. And William Kane would only be a brief interlude in her life. So, when it was time to return home, she left a check behind and returned to Norwin without looking back. Unexpectedly, she would meet him here now. And he turned out to be the infamous heir of the Kane family! Thinking of this, Evelyn's first reaction was to flee, especially since her last departure was less than graceful. In the end, she still felt guilty towards him. 'But then she thought, she was once William's benefactor, so why should she lower herself!' 'Ahem!' Evelyn gave herself a mental pep talk, but her steps still betrayed her desire to escape. "Not going to thank me?" It was William who stopped her. Evelyn stopped, took a deep breath, then looked at William and squinted her eyes. "Hmm. Thanks, Mr. Kane." Evelyn seemed polite, but her voice lacked sincerity. Seeing this familiar demeanor of Evelyn, William couldn't help but chuckle. Her feisty attitude was just like it used to be. ***** The banquet hall was still bustling with activity. Evelyn stared blankly at the fountain in the courtyard. Childbirth took a toll on Mrs. Johnson's health, so the vast Johnson family only had one daughter. As a child, she was very mischievous and often did things that were both amusing and exasperating. At a similar banquet, she played around and sneaked out alone, only to get lost. Evelyn remembered walking for a long time and even encountering a strange person who hugged her and cried, saying they had found her. She hid in fear, and by the time the Johnson couple found her, it was already late at night. Her small face was streaked with tears. The Johnson couple scolded her harshly, and as a result, she was sick for three days. After that, she didn't dare to have any more wild ideas. Later, her grandfather set strict rules for her, filling her daily schedule, and gradually, she had no friends. But she didn't mind, as long as she had her family by her side, she was content. But now, unexpectedly, her family was no longer her family. Thinking of this, Evelyn sighed. "Are you feeling sad?" A gloating voice said, and Evelyn looked at her expressionlessly. "You changed clothes so quickly." Vivian's face stiffened, and she clenched her fist. "I must say, mom is being so over the top. It's just a small cocktail party, yet she specially ordered so many dresses for me." She suddenly covered her mouth. "Sorry, Evelyn, I forgot, mom didn't order any for you. But it's okay, I have plenty. Take a look and see which one you like; I'll give it to you." Evelyn couldn't help but chuckle at how smug she was over a few dresses. Seeing her smile, Vivian became somewhat exasperated. "Evelyn, what are you so proud of! You've occupied my position for so many years, and you don't feel any guilt or remorse. If it weren't for my kind persuasion to mom, she would have kicked you out of the Johnson family long ago. What right do you have to attend such a high-class cocktail party!" "So what?" Evelyn laughed instead of getting angry. "Do you want me to thank you?" Vivian hesitated. "Do you believe I can get mom to kick you out!" "Sure." Evelyn stepped closer. "Go ahead, tell mom and dad to kick me out." With a slight smile, she walked past Vivian into the banquet hall. Vivian suddenly clenched her skirt, turning to glare at Evelyn's retreating figure. 'She couldn't understand why her father was against kicking Evelyn out! If not for Evelyn, she wouldn't have suffered so much! Now that she's back with the Johnson family, Evelyn shouldn't still hold the title of the Johnson family's eldest daughter. She was unwilling to accept it; everything in the Johnson family should belong to her. Evelyn had no right, nor was she worthy.' Malice filled Vivian's heart, her eyes darkened, and she charged directly at Evelyn. Evelyn heard the commotion behind her and furrowed her brows. Just as Vivian was about to reach her, she swiftly sidestepped. All of a sudden, there was a splash, and water splattered everywhere. "Ah!" "Evelyn! How dare you push me." Vivian was drenched, looking disheveled, her eyes fixed on Evelyn with intensity. "Ridiculous, I push you? I'm afraid of dirtying my hands." Hearing the commotion, William's expression hardened. After seeing Evelyn unharmed, his expression softened. With autumn setting in, a gust of wind made Vivian shiver. Glancing at William, a bashful look appeared on her face. She recalled Mrs. Johnson called him "Mr. Kane" earlier, indicating he was someone significant. She batted her eyes and coyly said, "Mr. Kane, I'm so cold. Could you lend me your coat?" William looked at her, then took off his coat. Vivian was overjoyed, only to see him drape the coat over Evelyn. The crowd that gathered at the sound looked on in shock. "What's going on? Why is Mr. Kane looking after this impostor? Could they have known each other before?" "Know each other? How could they possibly know each other? Mr. Kane is a paragon of excellence!"
