"Why are you so late?" As soon as Evelyn entered the house, her father stopped her in her tracks and glared at her disapprovingly.
"Hmm." Evelyn had no intention of explaining; the attitude of the Johnson couple tonight had already broken her heart. "If there's nothing else, I'll go back to my room first."
"Stop!" Her father was displeased. "Look at yourself, what do you think you're doing! Can't you be more like Vivian and give us some peace of mind?" Her father suddenly softened his tone, "What's your relationship with Mr. Kane? I saw he was quite attentive to you today."
Evelyn smiled bitterly. No wonder her father was suddenly so concerned about her; it turned out he wasn't concerned about her as a person. It seemed the recent issues with the Johnson Group were really troubling him.
"I don't know him. Maybe this Mr. Kane is just a kind-hearted person who just wanted to help me out."
Her father clearly didn't believe her explanation. The Kane family was not known for their kindness. He watched her retreating figure and frowned slightly; it seemed this matter needed to be thoroughly investigated.
In the corner of the second floor, Vivian quietly watched the scene, her eyes burning with jealousy and hatred. Her hands hung by her sides, clenched into tight fists. She had to find a way to repay all the humiliation she suffered today back to Evelyn!
For several days, Vivian kept a low profile, and Evelyn was happy to have some peace. After all, she had more important things to do at the moment.
For instance, figuring out the identity of the man in front of her.
Evelyn looked at the man before her. Although they had never met, an inexplicable sense of closeness caused her to frown.
"Are you saying I'm your younger sister?" Evelyn didn't believe the man's repeated claims and asked again.
Simon smiled patiently, nodding at Evelyn.
The surroundings suddenly fell silent.
Evelyn was shocked, trying to speak several times but not knowing what to say. This matter was truly beyond her expectations. She had imagined who her parents might be, but never thought she was a true heiress!
Graveston's Harrison family, she had only heard of them. They were on par with the Kane family, even holding a higher status than the Kane family.
However, they were not in the same city, and the Johnson family had a normal status, they had never had much interaction.
It was said that the Harrison family had four sons and a daughter, all outstanding individuals, and the youngest daughter had gone missing at a young age.
The Harrison family had always been searching for this little daughter, but Evelyn never expected someone to come and tell her that she was that little daughter! The eldest daughter of the Harrison family!
Evelyn frowned, her expression serious. "Are you really Simon Harrison?"
Simon smiled gently, "Miss Johnson, I am indeed Simon Harrison, without a doubt."
He had some doubts about Evelyn's identity, but after seeing her today, Simon was almost certain that the woman in front of him was his lost younger sister.
This striking resemblance was almost identical to his mother when she was young!
"You say I'm your sister, but I've never been to Graveston. Is it possible you're mistaken?"
"Miss Johnson, we are only speculating at this point, so if you're willing, I would like to invite you to come with me for a test."
Evelyn thought deeply. This matter was truly beyond her expectations, but ever since Vivian returned, she had always wanted to find her biological parents.
"Behind your ear, there's a red butterfly-shaped birthmark, just like my younger sister's." Seeing Evelyn's hesitation, Simon added.
Evelyn was stunned, unconsciously reaching to touch behind her ear. This birthmark was actually not very noticeable; most people wouldn't notice it unless they looked closely.
'Could he really be her older brother?'
After much deliberation, Evelyn finally spoke, "Okay, I'll go with you for the test."
Back at the Johnson household, Evelyn was deep in thought.
There was still some time before the test, but she instinctively felt that Simon's guess was true.
Lost in thought, she was suddenly stopped by Vivian, who was waiting at the door with jewelry in hand.
"Evelyn, Ethan plans to take me to tomorrow's auction. Which set of jewelry do you think I should wear?" Vivian gestured with the diamond necklace in her hand, looking smug. "Mom just had this custom-made for me, but I feel it might be a bit too extravagant."
Evelyn snapped back to reality, looking at her with a half-smile. "This set will do."
"Do you also think this set suits my style?"
"This set matches your petty satisfaction style." With that, Evelyn smiled and sauntered away.
Vivian stomped her foot in anger, but the thought that Evelyn wasn't qualified to attend the auction made her feel a bit better.
This auction was organized by the wealthiest Harrison family, and those invited were wealthy or of high status.
Moreover, it was said that the wealthiest Harrison family would also be present. If she could use this opportunity to meet some wealthy young gentlemen, she could ditch Ethan.
*****
On the day of the auction.
Vivian abandoned her usual luxurious princess image and chose a simple long white dress, with her long hair tied up.
In just over a month of living in comfort, she had begun to faintly resemble the appearance of a Johnson family heiress.
Vivian stood at the entrance, holding Ethan's arm, smiling and greeting others. But when she saw Evelyn in a black evening gown inside, her smile froze.
'How did she get here!
Didn't she not have an invitation?
How could she get in!'
Evelyn's appearance left everyone in awe, truly deserving of the title of "the most beautiful woman in Norwin"!
The last person who was so captivating was Mrs. Harrison.
And Evelyn had a top-tier beauty that rivaled Mrs. Harrison's in her prime. Upon closer inspection, they even had some similarities.
If one didn't know better, they might think Evelyn was Mrs. Harrison's daughter.
"Oh, isn't this Miss Johnson?" said one of Vivian's friends, with a disdainful look. "No, no, you're a fake. It's a pity, even in a gown, a crow can never become a swan."
Hearing this, others couldn't help but smile.
Vivian felt a bit smug. So what if Evelyn was beautiful? In the end, she was just a child without parents, unlike her, a legitimate Johnson family heiress.
"Evelyn, why didn't you tell me you were coming?" Vivian said, stepping forward to take Evelyn's hand, but Evelyn dodged.
Vivian's face showed a hint of embarrassment.
"Evelyn, are you here to buy something?" Vivian seemed a bit troubled. "But everything here is very expensive, and you don't have much spending money, so buying something might be difficult."
"Exactly, know your place! A pauper wanting to attend an auction, how presumptuous." Someone watching the scene chimed in.
"Evelyn, you're not thinking of using this auction to find a better prospect, are you?" The person asking had a malicious look in their eyes.
With those words, the expressions of the people present varied.
"Don't talk nonsense, Evelyn isn't like that." Vivian immediately retorted. "Whether she's my real sister or not, I'll always consider her family. How could those people ever be worthy of her?" Then, Vivian turned to the person beside her. "Ethan, don't you agree?"
Ethan looked indulgent. "You're too kind-hearted, but not everyone is as straightforward as you think." After saying that, he turned to Evelyn with a mocking look. "Everyone knows that the people here today are either rich or noble. Any one of them could probably set her up for life. And with her flashy outfit today, who knows what she's planning?"
Evelyn curled her lips into a smile, her eyes full of mockery as she looked at them. "I didn't expect that all Mr. Lewis thinks about are these things. No wonder the Lewis family has been losing so much recently."
Ethan's face stiffened, his expression turning extremely unpleasant. The news of the Lewis family's losses had been suppressed early on; how did she know?
During the conversation, a black Maybach came to a stop, the door opened, and William, in a bespoke black suit, walked over to Evelyn with long strides.
The well-tailored suit and silver-gray tie complemented his deep eyes. His face was both cold and regal, with a straight nose and tightly pressed lips, exuding an undeniable aura of authority.
His appearance drew everyone's attention, especially the socialites who had been chattering away. They immediately adjusted their postures, trying to present their most perfect selves in front of him.
William strode over to the center of the conversation, step by step, and finally stopped beside Evelyn.
William's gaze swept around before finally landing on Evelyn, seemingly in response to the earlier ridicule directed at her, he calmly said, "Whatever she fancies tonight, I'll foot the bill."
