Chapter 3 For a moment, I can only stare at the screen. What does he mean, am I sure? I glance around, taking in the flickering lights, the gurgle of the coffee starting to brew, the huge pots of water standing sentry behind me. Of course I’m sure. Then my phone rings. I jump, heart soaring. When I answer and hear Malcolm’s voice on the other end, I all but collapse against the counter. “Katy, you okay?” “Sort of.” “Are you hurt?” “No, no, I’m fine. Worried, is all. I’m brewing coffee and heating water, but I don’t know if it will help.” As I talk, I make my way from the kitchen to the front of the restaurant.
