Chapter 2 Behind me, his mother screeched, "Stay away from my grandchild! Don't taint her with your filth!" I kept my eyes on Daniel. His face twisted in shock at the words "Divorce Agreement." Nora watched me, unreadable. "Sign it," I said coldly. "Or I'll sue. You'll lose." For a moment, his gaze softened, as if he still loved me. Then he took the pen and signed. As the ink dried, the weight of ten years lifted. I was free. None of the tangled mess of resentments and betrayals was mine to carry anymore. Finally, I looked at Nora. "I hope you can keep him. Don't let him ruin anyone else." His mother's shrieks followed me out. "How dare you! Get out!" I didn't look back. Outside, the air smelled sweeter. With the papers signed, in thirty days, Daniel and I would be strangers.
