At the centre stood the marketplace where farmers and locals sold cereals, fruits and meats. The city lacked any sort of sewage system, so waste was thrown out of windows, producing a strong smell. People supplied themselves with water from wells, channels and even small canals. Most houses had two floors. The lower floor was made of stone and served as a workshop or store whereas the upper floor was used as the living area and was made of wood. Their way of life was very similar to that of the Middle Ages and it was evident that the Visigoths had imposed their culture on the island. Most of the city dwellers living in these houses could not speak Latin, whereas the upper echelons of Hittani society living in the castle itself had taught themselves the language of these invaders.
