Chapter Seven: The Truth Unveiled

931 Words
The following days were a blur of stolen glances, whispered conversations, and the persistent ache of uncertainty in Xynn's heart. Jade seemed to be caught between two worlds, the one she'd crafted with Xynn and the one she shared with her friends. The charade continued, fueled by the unspoken agreement between them, but the tension between them grew with each passing moment. Xynn felt like she was walking on eggshells, constantly trying to read Jade's expressions, decipher her subtle cues. Was Jade starting to feel something for her? Or was this just a game, a cruel joke that she was playing on Xynn’s heart? The doubt gnawed at Xynn’s mind, a persistent whisper in the back of her thoughts. She would see Jade in the hallways, their eyes meeting for a fleeting moment, and the flicker of warmth she saw in Jade’s gaze would give her hope. But then, Jade would disappear into a crowd of students, her smile fading, and the doubt would return, leaving Xynn feeling like she was teetering on the edge of a cliff. Xynn tried to talk to Jade, to ask her what she was thinking, but the words wouldn't come out. She was afraid of what she might hear, afraid of shattering the illusion they had built, afraid of revealing her own vulnerability. One afternoon, during a particularly awkward lunch where Jade spent more time scrolling through her phone than talking to Xynn, Xynn finally decided she couldn't take it anymore. She found Jade in the library, a sanctuary where Xynn usually found peace, but now, the silence felt suffocating. The library, with its towering bookshelves and the soft hum of fluorescent lights, was a place where Xynn could lose herself in a world of stories, escape the pressures of school life, and find solace in the company of words. But today, the library seemed to echo with Xynn’s anxieties, the silence amplifying the weight of Jade’s deception. Xynn watched Jade, who was sitting at a table near the window, her back to Xynn, lost in a book. Jade's hair, a cascade of dark curls, framed her face, casting shadows on her delicate features. Xynn tried to ignore the tension that thrummed through her, but she couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy as she watched Jade’s fingers gracefully turn the pages of the book. Xynn had always loved Jade's hands, with their long, slender fingers and perfectly manicured nails. She had imagined those hands holding hers, tracing the lines of her palm, sending shivers down her spine. But now, Xynn felt a sense of detachment, a realization that Jade was keeping a part of herself hidden, a secret that she refused to share. As Jade continued to ignore her, Xynn’s heart sank. She felt a sense of desperation, a need to break through the wall that Jade had erected between them. “Jade, I need to talk to you,” Xynn said, her voice trembling. Jade looked up from her book, her face a mask of feigned surprise. “What is it, Xynn?” Xynn’s heart pounded in her chest, and her breath caught in her throat. She had to do this. She had to break through the facade, to reveal the truth before it consumed her. “I… I can’t keep doing this,” Xynn blurted, her voice catching. “The whole… pretend date thing. It’s killing me.” Jade's eyes widened, and she hastily closed her book, a nervous energy radiating from her. "What are you talking about, Xynn? We're just friends," she said, her voice a strained whisper. Xynn’s heart ached as she heard Jade’s denial. She felt a surge of anger, a sense of betrayal. Jade knew what she was doing, and yet she continued to lie. “Don’t lie to me,” Xynn pleaded. “I know you only agreed to go out with me because of Rachel and Mike. I… I saw them, and I heard what they said.” Xynn had been walking through the hallways when she overheard Jade’s friends talking about their elaborate plan, their laughter echoing through the corridors. They were all in on the joke. They were all playing with Xynn’s heart. Jade’s face flushed, and she looked away, her shoulders slumping in defeat. "It was just a joke," she mumbled. "I didn't think it would be a big deal." “A joke?” Xynn scoffed. “It’s not a joke when someone’s feelings are involved. You know I’m crazy about you, Jade.” Xynn felt the tears welling up in her eyes, a mix of hurt and anger. She couldn’t believe that Jade would do this to her, that she would betray her trust, that she would play with her heart. Jade met Xynn’s gaze, her eyes brimming with a mix of guilt and something else that Xynn couldn’t quite decipher. “I… I’m sorry, Xynn,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “I never meant to hurt you.” “But you did,” Xynn said, her voice trembling. “You made me believe that there was something between us, something real. And now I don’t know what to think anymore.” Jade reached out and took Xynn’s hand, her touch gentle but firm. “Xynn, I… I need to tell you something. It’s not just a joke. It’s… it’s more than that.” Xynn’s heart pounded in her chest. She felt a mixture of fear and hope. She couldn’t tell what Jade was about to say, but she knew that it was going to change everything.
