Chapter 2

I had barely managed to finish my morning chores when I overheard my father's booming voice echoing through the palace. He summoned Ana and Isabella and ordered them to dress in their prettiest dresses. A strong Alpha from a neighboring pack was visiting, and it seemed that he was someone of great importance. My curiosity got the better of me, and I couldn't resist the temptation to eavesdrop on their conversation. Quietly, I pressed my ear against the ornate wooden door that separated my chamber from the main hallway. The voices on the other side became clearer, and I strained to listen. "Girls, I want you to look your best today," my father's voice commanded. "Alpha Harrison is visiting, and he is one of the strongest Alphas in the region. We need to make a good impression." Alpha Harrison. I had heard of him before. He was known for his strength and authority, a dominant Alpha who commanded respect from all. I couldn't help but wonder what brought him to our pack. Ana's voice, dripping with excitement, responded, "Father, I'll wear that blue dress with the lace embroidery. It's sure to catch his eye." Isabella chimed in, "I'll wear the red one with the silk sash. He won't be able to resist." Their enthusiasm grated on my nerves, but I continued to listen intently, hoping to gather more information. My father chuckled, clearly pleased with their eagerness. "Very well, my darlings. You two will dazzle him. Now, go and prepare yourselves." As the footsteps of Ana and Isabella retreated down the corridor, my heart pounded with anticipation. This was a rare occasion, and I couldn't help but wonder why Alpha Harrison had chosen to visit our pack. My thoughts were interrupted when I heard my father's voice again, this time laced with scorn. "And what about Leah?" he asked, his tone dripping with disdain. "Should we dress her up as well?" My heart sank. I knew what was coming. I was nothing more than a lowly slave in their eyes, and the thought of being mocked and humiliated in front of an esteemed Alpha made my stomach churn. My stepmother's voice, cold and calculated, answered, "Leah is a mere slave. She should remain hidden. The Alpha doesn't need to see her. It would be an embarrassment to our pack." My father chuckled once more, a cruel edge to his laughter. "You're right, my dear. Leah is nothing but a stain on our family's reputation. She shouldn't be seen in the presence of Alpha Harrison." Tears welled up in my eyes as their words cut deep into my soul. I had hoped, even for just a moment, that my father might stand up for me. But it was clear that I was nothing more than a burden to him, a constant reminder of my late mother whom he had never truly loved. I couldn't bear to listen any longer. Quietly, I stepped away from the door, my heart heavy with despair. I retreated to a corner of my chamber, hidden from view, and tried to stifle my sobs. It was then that my stepmother's voice, sharp and demanding, reached my ears. "Leah! Where are you, you wretched girl? You should be doing your chores, not eavesdropping on our conversations!" Panic washed over me as I realized I had been caught. My stepmother and father would surely punish me for daring to listen in on their conversation. I hurriedly wiped away my tears and emerged from my hiding spot. My stepmother stood in the doorway, her eyes filled with anger. My father, a cold and distant figure, stood beside her. "I-I'm sorry," I stammered, my voice trembling with fear. "I didn't mean to eavesdrop. I was just passing by." My stepmother's lips curled into a wicked smile. "Passing by, were you? Well, it seems that our little slave has quite the curiosity." My father joined in, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Yes, Leah, you should know your place. You are nothing but a servant in this palace. You should stay out of matters that don't concern you." Tears welled up in my eyes once again, but I refused to let them see my weakness. I had learned to endure their cruelty over the years, and I would not give them the satisfaction of seeing me break down. "I understand," I whispered, my voice barely audible. "I'll go back to my chores." My stepmother nodded in satisfaction. "See that you do, and stay out of our way. Alpha Harrison's visit is of great importance, and we won't have you tarnishing our reputation." With that, they turned and walked away, leaving me standing alone in my chamber, my heart heavy with a sense of worthlessness. I couldn't help but wonder if there would ever be a day when I would be seen as more than just a slave, a day when I could stand proudly and face the world without shame. As I went about my chores, my mind was filled with thoughts of Alpha Harrison and the unknown reason for his visit.
