Chapter 27

960 Words
The second the chain snapped, every light in the cavern died. Darkness swallowed the chamber whole. Not ordinary darkness. Living darkness. Midnight felt it slither across her skin instantly, cold and hungry, wrapping around the pillars and ancient stone like smoke searching for a body to possess. The Hollow King inhaled deeply from the pit below. And smiled. “Freedom.” Kael’s claws extended fully. Silver energy burst from his body in sharp waves, illuminating the cavern just enough for Midnight to see him position himself directly in front of her. Protective. Territorial. Absolutely lethal. Another chain cracked. The sound echoed through the mountain like thunder. Lucien swore under his breath. “The seal’s collapsing.” Midnight’s pulse thundered. The call inside her chest was unbearable now. The abyss wasn’t whispering anymore. It was pulling. Every instinct inside her screamed contradictory things: run fight kneel obey destroy The demon inside her surged violently toward the Hollow King. Mine. Kael felt it immediately through the bond. His head snapped slightly toward her. “Midnight.” She grabbed her own arms tightly. “I’m trying.” The Hollow King laughed softly. “You still resist your blood.” Kael’s growl rolled through the cavern. “She resists you.” The creature’s crimson eyes narrowed. “No, wolf.” Its gaze slid toward Midnight. “She resists herself.” Another violent tremor shook the mountain. Stone crashed from the ceiling. The Hollow King stepped higher from the pit. The chains still wrapped around it—but loosely now. Weakening. Midnight stared in horror at the creature’s full size. God. It was massive. Wings made of smoke and abyss-fire stretched partially behind it while ancient black markings crawled across gray skin like living runes. And the worst part? Something about it looked familiar. Not physically. Emotionally. Like looking at the final version of herself if she lost control completely. The Hollow King noticed her expression instantly. “Yes,” it murmured. Midnight’s stomach twisted. Kael moved slightly closer to her. Grounding her again. The mate bond surged warmly through her chest, fighting the pull of the abyss. The Hollow King snarled softly at the reaction. “That should not overpower ancient blood.” Lucien suddenly looked sharply toward one of the runes carved into the walls. His golden eyes widened. “Kael.” The alpha didn’t look away from the creature. “What?” Lucien’s voice dropped carefully. “The bond isn’t just stabilizing her.” Midnight frowned. “What does that mean?” Lucien swallowed once. “It’s changing the abyss energy itself.” Silence. The Hollow King went still. Actually still. Kael’s expression darkened instantly. “Explain.” Lucien pointed toward the runes lining the cavern walls. Midnight looked closer. And froze. The crimson symbols nearest her and Kael had changed color. Silver. Not fully. But spreading. The Hollow King noticed too. For the first time since meeting it— real anger crossed its face. “No.” The chains around the creature rattled violently. The cavern shook harder. Lucien stared at the runes in disbelief. “Abyss magic doesn’t purify.” Kael’s silver gaze sharpened slightly. “But hers is.” Midnight’s breath caught. “What?” Lucien looked genuinely stunned now. “The mate bond is altering the corruption through emotional imprinting.” Midnight blinked slowly. “That sounded fake.” Kael almost smiled. Almost. Lucien looked offended. “It means your emotional connection with Kael is rewriting how the abyss responds to you.” The Hollow King roared. The sound exploded through the cavern violently enough to split stone pillars apart. “You poison the bloodline!” Kael stepped forward instantly. “And you underestimate her.” The Hollow King’s crimson eyes burned toward Midnight. “You would destroy your inheritance for a wolf?” The demon inside her surged violently. Conflicted. Torn between ancient instinct and something newer. Something warmer. Kael’s hand brushed hers again briefly. Steady. Certain. Real. Midnight realized something horrifying then. The abyss didn’t understand love. Possession? Yes. Obsession? Absolutely. Power? Always. But this— this willingness Kael had to protect her without controlling her— confused it. Threatened it. The Hollow King slowly smiled again. But colder this time. “Then the wolf dies first.” Everything happened at once. The remaining chains exploded. The Hollow King surged free from the pit with a roar that shook the mountain to its core. Kael launched forward instantly. Silver power collided with abyss fire in a catastrophic explosion of claws, smoke, and ancient energy. Midnight screamed as the force knocked her backward. The cavern erupted into chaos. The Hollow King struck first. One massive claw slammed Kael through a stone pillar hard enough to collapse half the chamber. Lucien shouted something— Midnight couldn’t hear it over the ringing in her ears. Kael rose from the rubble immediately. Blood running down his mouth. Silver eyes blazing murderously. The Hollow King laughed. “Yes. Fight for her.” The creature lunged again. Kael met it head-on. Wolf against abyss. Alpha against king. The impact shattered the cavern floor. Midnight staggered upright desperately. “Kael!” The mate bond burned violently through her chest. Pain. Rage. Protectiveness. Not hers. His. The Hollow King grabbed Kael by the throat. And suddenly Midnight stopped thinking. The shadows around the cavern exploded upward. The abyss answered her instantly. Every rune across the chamber ignited. The Hollow King turned sharply toward her. And for the first time— Midnight’s power did not feel wild. It felt royal. Ancient. Commanding. The shadows bent toward her like soldiers awaiting orders. The Hollow King’s crimson eyes widened slightly. Because Midnight had just unconsciously done something impossible. She commanded the abyss itself— and it obeyed.
