Chapter 7

The drive to Black Hollow was silent. Not peaceful. Never peaceful. The silence inside Kael’s SUV felt sharp enough to cut skin. Rain hammered against the windows while Midnight sat rigid in the passenger seat, staring out at endless forests blurred by darkness and stormlight. Everything felt different now. Too loud. Too sharp. She could hear the engine vibrating beneath the floorboards. The wolves following them two miles back. Kael’s heartbeat—steady on the surface, violent underneath. And beneath all of it… Malakar. Not physically present anymore. But still there. Lurking at the edges of her mind like smoke trapped inside her ribs. Midnight clenched her jaw. Kael noticed instantly. “You need to stop fighting your breathing.” Her head snapped toward him. “You can hear that?” “I can hear your pulse changing.” Of course he could. He was a wolf. An alpha. A terrifyingly observant one. Kael kept one hand on the steering wheel while the other rested near the center console, relaxed but ready. Everything about him radiated controlled violence. Even now covered in blood and rainwater, he looked devastating. Midnight hated noticing that. Especially now. “You keep staring at me.” Her eyes widened slightly. “I am not.” Kael glanced at her briefly, silver eyes glinting in the dark. “You are.” Heat crawled up her neck instantly. The corner of his mouth almost twitched. Almost. Then his expression hardened again. “You should have killed that hunter.” Midnight froze. The warmth vanished instantly. “What?” Kael’s grip tightened slightly on the wheel. “He saw what you are.” Something painful twisted in her chest. “You say that like I’m a disease.” Kael’s eyes snapped toward her immediately. Dangerous. Wrong thing to say. “That is not what I meant.” “Then what did you mean?” The SUV slowed slightly as they rounded a sharp mountain curve. Kael was silent for too long. Finally— “I mean the world will not hesitate to kill you.” Midnight looked away again. The truth of that still hurt. Kael exhaled slowly. “You showed mercy.” His voice was quieter now. “That makes you more dangerous than the demon.” She frowned slightly. “That makes no sense.” “It does to me.” The way he said it made something shift inside her. Because Kael sounded almost relieved. Like he had expected her to become something worse tonight. And maybe part of him still was. Lightning flashed across the mountains ahead. Then Midnight saw it. Black Hollow. The town sat deep between towering forests and cliffs, glowing faintly beneath storm clouds and fog. From this distance it almost looked beautiful. Until she noticed the barriers. Symbols burned faintly into the outer treeline surrounding the town—massive protection marks hidden beneath layers of old magic. A prison. Or a fortress. Maybe both. Midnight swallowed slowly. “Your territory.” Kael nodded once. “You’re safe here.” The demon inside her laughed softly. No she isn’t. Midnight flinched hard enough for Kael to notice immediately. “He’s talking again.” Not a question. She nodded reluctantly. Kael’s jaw tightened. “What did he say?” Midnight hesitated. Then quietly— “He said I’m not safe here.” Kael’s silver eyes darkened. “Malakar wants you isolated.” “That doesn’t answer the question.” “No,” Kael said calmly. “It doesn’t.” That somehow scared her more. The gates to Draven Ridge opened before they even stopped moving. Massive iron barriers hidden within the mountain cliffs. Armed wolves stood guard along the perimeter. Every single one of them stiffened the moment the SUV passed. They could smell her. Fear spread through the bond-lines of the territory instantly like a ripple in water. Midnight felt it. Every whisper. Every nervous glance. Hybrid. Demon-blood. Monster. Her chest tightened painfully. Kael parked sharply in front of an enormous dark stone estate built directly into the mountainside. The place looked ancient. Brutal. Powerful. Like it had survived wars. Kael killed the engine. Silence settled heavily between them again. Midnight stared at the house. “They’re afraid of me.” Kael didn’t deny it. “That will change.” “You don’t know that.” “No,” he admitted. “But they’ll obey me regardless.” Midnight looked at him sharply. “You really are terrifying.” This time the corner of his mouth did move slightly. A real reaction. Brief. Gone immediately. “You have no idea.” The passenger door opened before Midnight could answer. The female wolf from earlier stood outside waiting. Dark hair soaked from rain. Amber eyes sharp with distrust. She looked directly at Midnight. Not cruel. Not kind either. Assessing. “Alpha,” she greeted tightly. Kael stepped out first. Midnight followed more carefully. The second her boots touched the ground— every light across the estate flickered. Silence crashed through the courtyard. The wolves nearby went still. Midnight’s stomach dropped. “I didn’t mean to do that.” Kael’s expression darkened slightly. He believed her. The others clearly didn’t. The female wolf stepped closer to Kael and lowered her voice. Though Midnight still heard every word. “The elders are already gathering.” Of course they were. Kael looked completely unimpressed. “Let them.” “The council sent hunters,” the female warned. “This is bigger than a rogue hybrid.” Kael’s eyes shifted toward Midnight briefly. “I know exactly what this is.” Midnight wished she did. The front doors opened suddenly. An older wolf stepped outside. Gray-haired. Massive. Scar running across one eye. His gaze landed on Midnight— —and pure horror crossed his face. Not fear. Recognition. The old wolf whispered one word. “Impossible.” The demon inside Midnight stirred instantly. And somewhere deep beneath the mountain— something answered.
