“There she is.”
The words snapped something inside Kael.
Power exploded from him instantly.
Silver energy burst through the ruined hall as his wolf surged to the surface, violent and territorial. The force of it slammed through the room hard enough to crack pillars and drive every other wolf backward.
Even the Hollow King paused.
Kael pulled Midnight behind him with one arm while his eyes locked on the chained creature below.
“Do not speak to her like you own her.”
The alpha’s voice no longer sounded fully human.
It sounded like teeth.
Midnight’s crimson gaze lifted slowly toward him.
And for one terrifying second—
the demon inside her wanted to challenge him.
Not out of hatred.
Instinct.
Predator meeting predator.
The darkness around her thickened immediately in response.
Kael felt it through the bond.
His eyes snapped toward her instantly.
“Midnight.”
Warning.
Not fear.
Never fear.
The Hollow King smiled wider beneath them.
“Yes,” it purred. “Feel it.”
Midnight’s breathing deepened.
Her pulse thundered.
Every instinct inside her screamed conflicting things:
tear everything apart
touch Kael
run
submit
feed
survive
Too much.
It was too much.
She stumbled backward, clutching her head.
“Make it stop.”
Kael turned toward her immediately.
The second his attention shifted from the Hollow King—
the chains below groaned louder.
The creature moved.
Not free.
But closer.
Lucien swore sharply. “Kael!”
Too late.
One massive clawed hand shot upward from the pit.
Straight toward Midnight.
Kael moved faster than thought.
He intercepted the creature mid-lunge with a roar that shook the estate. Silver power exploded from him as claws met claws in a collision violent enough to split the remaining floor apart.
Midnight screamed.
The bond between them lit up like fire.
Pain slammed through her chest—
not hers.
Kael’s.
The Hollow King grinned.
“You feel him now.”
Midnight’s eyes widened in horror.
Through the mate bond she could feel everything:
Kael’s rage
the strain on his body
the pain ripping through his arm where the creature touched him
And beneath all of it—
the terrifying instinct to protect her.
The Hollow King shoved harder.
Kael held the line.
Barely.
The floor beneath his feet cracked.
Silver blood hit the stone.
Midnight froze.
Silver blood.
Something inside her snapped violently.
The demon surged.
Not toward destruction.
Toward him.
Mine.
The roar that tore from Midnight’s throat sounded ancient.
The shadows in the room exploded outward.
Every light shattered.
The Hollow King’s eyes widened for the first time.
Because Midnight did not attack Kael.
She attacked the thing hurting him.
Black fire erupted from her hands and slammed into the Hollow King with catastrophic force.
The creature roared.
Not in pain.
Shock.
The chains across its body ignited bright crimson as shadow-fire spread over its skin.
Midnight kept going.
The power pouring out of her felt endless now.
Rage-fueled.
Protective.
The abyss itself answered her fury.
Kael stared at her.
Not with fear.
With realization.
The Hollow King snarled beneath the flames.
“You would burn your own blood for him?”
Midnight’s glowing crimson eyes narrowed.
“He’s not the one trying to turn me into a weapon.”
The entire room went still.
Even the shadows paused.
Because for the first time—
Midnight’s power obeyed her.
Not instinct.
Not rage.
Choice.
The Hollow King noticed too.
Its expression slowly changed.
Not anger.
Concern.
Real concern.
“That should not be possible.”
Kael ripped his claws free from the creature’s grip and immediately moved back toward Midnight despite the blood running down his arm.
“Midnight,” he said carefully.
She turned toward him.
The second she saw the blood again—
the demon stirred hungrily.
Midnight recoiled instantly.
“No.”
Kael stepped closer anyway.
“Look at me.”
“I could hurt you.”
“You won’t.”
“You don’t know that!”
“Yes,” Kael said firmly. “I do.”
The certainty in his voice nearly broke her.
The Hollow King watched them both carefully now.
Calculating.
Then slowly—
it smiled again.
But differently this time.
Not victorious.
Interested.
“I understand now.”
Kael’s silver eyes flashed dangerously.
“You understand nothing.”
“Oh, I understand perfectly.”
Its crimson gaze is fixed on Midnight.
“You are not becoming the next ruler of the abyss because of your demon blood.”
The creature’s smile widened slowly.
“You are becoming one because of your heart.”
Cold silence followed.
Midnight stared.
“What?”
The Hollow King leaned against its chains.
“Power born from hatred destroys quickly.”
Its gaze shifted briefly toward Kael.
“But power born from devotion?”
The creature’s smile turned ancient.
“That reshapes worlds.”
And suddenly—
Midnight realized why the creature beneath the mountain looked so afraid of Kael.
Not because Kael could kill it.
Because Kael was changing her.
