The Choice She Made Alone

Bound by Blood and Moonlight Chapter 4 Elena spent the hours between Damon's departure and sundown doing something she had not expected of herself, testing the boundaries of a body that no longer felt entirely like her own. She noticed it first in small ways. The sound of her neighbor's television carried through the wall with a clarity that should not have been possible from two apartments away. The smell of coffee brewing three floors down reached her before she had even finished making her own. When she caught her reflection in the bathroom mirror, her eyes seemed sharper somehow, the amber flecks she had never noticed before catching the light in a way that made her breath catch. She was becoming something. Whatever choice Damon had offered her that morning, some part of the decision had apparently already been made the night her blood mixed with his, whether either of them had consented to it or not. By late afternoon, she found herself standing in front of her closet, packing a bag she had not consciously decided to pack, some instinct deeper than logic already choosing the path her mind was still pretending to weigh. She told herself she was simply being practical, that meeting Damon's deadline with preparation made more sense than meeting it empty handed regardless of which choice she made. She did not entirely believe her own reasoning, and some part of her suspected the pull itself had already decided for her, long before sundown arrived to make the choice official. A knock at her door came earlier than expected, sharp and urgent rather than the careful, contained knock Damon had used the night before. Elena crossed the room cautiously, every sense she had gained overnight suddenly straining toward the door with an alertness that felt entirely unfamiliar. The woman standing in the hallway was not Damon. She was tall, dark haired, with eyes that held none of the amber warmth Elena had grown unexpectedly used to overnight, cold and calculating in a way that made every new instinct in Elena's body scream danger before the stranger had spoken a single word. "Elena Hart," the woman said, her voice pleasant in a way that did not reach her eyes at all. "My name is Selene. I lead the Thornwood pack, and I believe we have quite a lot to discuss regarding the rather unusual bond you have found yourself tangled in." Elena's pulse spiked, every warning Damon had given her that morning suddenly feeling far less theoretical than it had a few hours ago. "I do not know what you are talking about," she said, keeping her voice as steady as she could manage. "Please," Selene said, something almost amused entering her tone. "I can smell the bond on you from here. Damon Voss's blood runs through your veins now, which makes you the single most interesting complication this territory has seen in years. I am not here to hurt you, Elena. I am here to offer you a considerably better deal than whatever Damon has undoubtedly promised." "I have not agreed to anything with anyone yet," Elena said. "Wise," Selene said, studying her with an assessing gaze that made Elena feel like a puzzle being solved rather than a person being addressed. "Because Damon Voss will use this bond to strengthen his own position, whatever protective language he has wrapped it in. My pack, on the other hand, would be considerably more generous to someone willing to help us understand exactly how a blood bond formed outside the traditional bite. Knowledge like that is valuable, Elena. Valuable enough that I am prepared to offer you protection, resources, and a place in my pack that Damon's more traditional hierarchy would likely never extend to a human." Elena studied the woman carefully, weighing the offer against everything Damon had warned her about that morning, rival packs seeking to exploit or eliminate the bond depending on which served their interests better. Selene's offer sounded reasonable on the surface, and that, more than anything else, was exactly what made Elena's newly sharpened instincts recoil from it. "Why would you help me," Elena asked, "if half of what Damon told me this morning is true. Why would any pack see this bond as anything other than a threat worth eliminating." Something flickered behind Selene's composed expression, brief and quickly smoothed away, the particular frustration of someone unaccustomed to a target seeing through careful diplomacy so quickly. "Because," Selene said, "a threat neutralized through alliance is considerably less costly than a threat neutralized through violence. I would much rather have you as a valuable asset than have to explain to my own pack why a permanent blood bond was allowed to strengthen a rival Alpha unchecked." The honesty of it, however calculated, told Elena more than the earlier flattery had. Selene was not offering protection out of kindness. She was offering it because controlling Elena, one way or another, mattered enough to justify considerable effort. "I need time to think," Elena said, echoing the same request she had made of Damon that morning. "Of course," Selene said, though her thin smile suggested she had not expected Elena to accept on the spot. "Though I would think carefully, and quickly. Damon Voss is not the only interested party who now knows you exist, and not every pack in this territory will be as patient as I am being right now." She left with the same unhurried confidence she had arrived with, and Elena closed the door behind her with hands that were, she noticed distantly, shaking harder than they had at any point since Damon's revelation the night before. Sundown was less than an hour away now, and Elena understood, standing alone in her apartment with a half packed bag and two competing offers of protection that both sounded, underneath their careful diplomacy, like different flavors of the same cage, that whatever choice she made in the next sixty minutes would determine considerably more than her own safety. It would determine which version of a war she had never asked to join she was about to become a permanent part of. End of Chapter 4
