The midday meal was delicious. No ordinary peasants, the Proteans could hunt very well. Not all were good at spells, though, like Alara and Lenora. Only those in the higher rungs of the hierarchy could, like Sara and her mate, Geoffrey, and a few of her inner circle Proteans.
Not everyone was a wolf, either. Sigrid was a fox, and Ermine was a serpent. There were a few other species, but it was hard to keep up. Melinoe was grateful for the beans, corn, and rabbit they had to eat. She tried to ignore Nilus’ voice.
“Do you no longer care about this man?” he whispered.
In her mind, she responded while shredding some rabbit meat with her bare hands, “He has made a deal. He is there of his own will. That is no longer my business.”
