Aron brought me home. Standing at my doorstep, we locked eyes once again, and a soft smile crept onto my face. The moment I stepped inside, a piercing headache hit me; it felt as though the unbearable, thumping bass of the club was still trapped inside my skull. Thinking a hot shower would do me good, I headed to the bathroom.
As the droplets of water cascaded down my body, the memory of our kiss rushed back. A sudden wave of excitement washed over me. It felt as though this was exactly what my body had been yearning for after all these years—as if I had finally been made whole. I was drowning in an entirely unfamiliar sea of emotions. It felt like it was the first real kiss of my life.
"Raven!?" I snapped at myself. "Get a grip. He’s just like every other man."
The shower had worked wonders; the throbbing in my head had finally subsided. I slid into bed, but Aron refused to leave my mind. His body, heavily scarred by the brutal blows of life, his powerful arms, his deep brown eyes... Lost in these thoughts, I drifted into a deep sleep, completely unaware of when darkness had finally claimed me.
[Aron]
Morning had broken. Today was the day of a critical fight. My opponent was notoriously stubborn and merciless, but the promised prize money was staggering. Despite his reputation, I didn’t have a single shred of doubt about my victory.
I scrambled to get my gear together for a quick warm-up session when my friend Chase walked in.
"Ah, brother! You've got a massive fight today and you're only just getting up? You good?"
"Yeah, Chase, I'm great," I replied, focused. "Today’s fight is ours."
"Listen, man," Chase said, leaning in. "Word is some heavy hitters from the underground world are coming to watch tonight. If you catch their eye, they might bump you up to the professional rings. Your boy Chase wouldn't mind drowning in cash thanks to you, eh? What do you say?"
[Aron's Perspective]
Chase was ecstatic. As for me, I only wanted the money to survive—it was a matter of sheer necessity. After four to five hours of grueling, intense preparation, night had finally fallen.
Chase and I were going over the strategy, discussing the crucial details and how the fight should play out. With only a few hours left before the bell, the arena was already buzzing, slowly filling up with crowds. Chase was busy collecting bets from the spectators. Most of them knew me—this wasn't my first time in the ring—and they were betting heavily on my victory. The arena was packed denser than usual; people were wagering massive fortunes on my name.
Just then, my opponent entered the hall. A mocking, arrogant smirk was plastered across his face.
"Hey, friend," he barked, bursting into a loud, booming laugh. "Any last wishes before I put you in the ground?"
His laughter ignited a cold, burning rage inside me. No matter what it took, I was going to knock him out cold.
We retreated to our respective corners to finalize preparations. Chase kept buzzing in my ear, throwing inspiring words and hype my way to lift my spirits, but my gaze was locked dead onto my opponent. That sickening laugh of his kept echoing in my ears.
The referee signaled, the bell rang, and the fight began.
The guy was incredibly heavy and genuinely powerful. Withstanding his brutal blows took everything I had. But I had learned to fight for survival since I was a kid; no matter how heavy and punishing his punches were, I managed to push through. We dragged each other through several exhausting rounds, leaving both of us battered, bloodied, and torn apart.
By the fourth round, I noticed him limping slightly on one leg. Seizing the split second, I targeted his weak stance and followed up with a vicious hooks right under his jaw. He crashed to the canvas, completely motionless.
Yes. The victory was mine.
The arena erupted. The crowd was chanting my name over and over: "Aron! Aron!"
I could barely open my left eye; the swelling and cuts were severe, but I couldn't care less. I had won. Suddenly, cutting through the blinding lights and the roaring noise, I glanced up toward the VIP balcony near Chase’s office. A group of men were watching me. In the center stood a man dressed in a sharp, classic suit, flanked by two hulking, broad-shouldered bodyguards. The man in the suit was clapping for me.
Leaving the ring behind, I slowly made my way toward the exit. Walking down the streets, a mix of sharp, throbbing pain and overwhelming triumph washed over me. A smile formed on my face as I thought about the money I had just won and how I would spend it.
Then, Raven crossed my mind. The memory of our kiss, the softness of her hands... I desired her intensely. Turning on my heel, I began navigating the dimly lit alleyways leading toward her neighborhood.
I had just reached a block near her house when sharp, piercing screams tore through the night air. “Help me! Please, someone help!”
Honestly, finding trouble in these neighborhoods wasn't unusual—it was practically the threshold of the criminal underworld. But as I sprinted closer, the realization hit me like a physical blow: those desperate cries belonged to Raven. Three men had cornered her, attempting to assault her.
Seeing that drove me completely insane. Before I even registered my own movement, I charged at them. They never saw me coming. Within seconds of colliding with them, I had already neutralized two of them. My training and raw fighting instincts made it easy to lay a man out cold with a single, precise strike.
The third man panicked and pulled a gun on me. The moment I lunged to strike the weapon out of his hand, it went off with a loud bang. Thankfully, the bullet missed us both, and the gun clattered to the ground. I tackled him, pinning him to the dirt, and began raining down vicious, blind punches on his face. I lost track of reality; I wasn't even aware that I was beating him within an inch of his life.
Raven was sobbing uncontrollably. I pulled her into my arms, holding her tightly to anchor her. The moment she realized it was me, the sheer relief and joy in her tear-filled eyes didn't escape me.
[Raven's Perspective]
"Aron... if it weren't for you, I... God knows what would have happened to me..."
"Don't worry, you're safe now. I'm here," he murmured, pulling me even closer into a protective, tight embrace.
Just then, the distant, wailing sirens of police cars echoed through the night.
"Raven, we need to move," Aron said, his voice tense. "They must be responding to the gunshot. We can't be seen here."
My house was just around the corner. We broke into a fast pace, slipping through the shadows toward my building. When we finally reached my door, Aron stepped back. "Go on inside."
I grabbed his hand tightly. "No, you're coming with me." I couldn't just let him leave. His face was cut up, his knuckles were bleeding, and his entire body was covered in fresh wounds from his fight. Besides, the police were crawling all over the area, and he was my savior.
Aron reluctantly stepped inside. "Make yourself at home," I said with a faint, soft smile.
"I don't have a home," he replied quietly.
We both let out a small, breathless laugh—a brief release of tension after such a horrific night. I handed him a clean towel and a change of clothes. "A shower will help soothe those injuries."
While he was in the bathroom, I gathered bandages and rubbing alcohol to clean his wounds. Afterward, we sat close together on the couch. A towel was securely wrapped around his waist, held in place by his hand, as I gently dabbed the alcohol onto the gashes slicing across his back and face.
Aron was staring at me with an intensity that made my breath catch. I found myself fighting an internal war against my own rising desire, trying desperately not to surrender to the tension between us.
"Raven," he whispered suddenly.
"Yeah?" I managed to breathe out, my voice barely audible.
Reaching up with his left hand, he gently cupped my chin, tilting my face upward toward his. He leaned in, his lips meeting mine in a deep kiss. In that exact fraction of a second, I felt a sudden, burning heat radiating through my entire body. I knew then how desperately I wanted him. Giving up the fight, I surrendered myself to the feeling and began kissing him back.
As I responded to his touch, his kisses grew deeper, fiercer, driven by a raw hunger. The towel around his waist slipped away. I ended up in his lap, both of us losing our minds as a wild, consuming passion took over. He quickly stripped the clothes from my body. Feeling the intoxicating friction of his masculinity against my skin ignited an unbearable, aching fire deep within me. I let out a deep, trembling sigh. It had been a very long time since I had let a man into my life. We held nothing back, making love with a frantic intensity that lasted until the early hours of the morning.
When dawn finally broke, we lay there, completely exhausted and uncovered. My head was resting gently against Aron's bare chest.
[Aron's Perspective]
When I blinked my eyes open, Raven was still sound asleep. The events of last night replayed vividly in my mind. I had achieved exactly what I wanted. Yet, whether it was because I had fulfilled my objective or simply because the thrill of the chase was over, an unexpected wave of emotional detachment and cold indifference washed over me.
Deep down, I already knew the truth: I didn't love her.
I had only desired her as a conquest, a body to possess in bed, and I had gotten exactly what I set out to get. Slipping out from under her, I quietly put my clothes back on and stepped out into the morning air.
I needed to get back to the gym. What had happened to Chase? How did everything pan out? The last time I had seen him, he was still celebrating at the arena, buried in conversation with the remaining spectators after the fight.
