CHAPTER 3
The morning air was crisp, biting at the fresh cuts on my face as I walked back toward the gym. My body ached from the brutal rounds in the ring, but my mind was entirely focused on business. The euphoria of the victory—and the passion of the night before—had completely evaporated, leaving behind a cold, familiar detachment.
When I pushed open the heavy iron doors of the gym, the smell of stale sweat, leather, and cheap cigar smoke hit me.
"Look who finally decides to show up!" Chase’s voice boomed across the empty mats. He was sitting at the main desk, counting thick stacks of hundred-dollar bills, a massive grin splitting his face. "The man, the myth, the champion! Brother, you made us filthy rich last night!"
The Aftermath of the Fight
Chase stood up, throwing a heavy arm around my shoulder, though he quickly pulled back when I winced.
"Damn, they really did a number on you," Chase said, his eyes scanning my bruised jaw and swollen eye. "But it was worth it. Look at this." He slapped a thick envelope against my chest. "Your cut of the prize money. Plus the bonuses from the side bets. You’re set for months, Aron."
"Thanks, Chase," I said, taking the envelope and pocketing it. "What about the guys in the VIP balcony? You were talking to them after the match."
Chase’s face instantly turned serious. He leaned in close, dropping his voice to a whisper.
"That was Viktor Vance. The biggest promoter in the underground circuit—and allegedly the guy who runs half the illegal operations on the east side. He wants you, Aron. He said you've got the raw grit he needs for the high-stakes pro rings. The kind of fights where the buy-in alone is more than we made last night."
I looked down at my bruised knuckles. This was the break I had been fighting for. The ticket out of the gutter.
"When do I meet him?" I asked.
"Tonight. At the Onyx Lounge," Chase replied. "But wait... where the hell did you disappear to last night? I looked everywhere for you after the crowds cleared out."
A Cold Clean Break
I turned away, picking up a hand wrap from the bench and tightly binding my knuckles. "I had some things to take care of."
"Does this 'thing' happen to have a name?" Chase smirked, raising an eyebrow. "You look like a man who got exactly what he wanted."
"It doesn't matter," I said flatly, my voice completely devoid of emotion. "It's over."
Chase blinked, surprised by my tone. "Wow. Just like that? Standard Aron protocol, huh? Cold as ice."
He didn't understand. Survival didn't leave room for sentimentality. Raven was a momentary distraction, a fire I needed to quench. Now that the fire was out, there was only ash. I had to focus on Viktor Vance and the professional rings.
Meanwhile, Across Town...
[Raven's Perspective]
The bright morning sun filtered through the blinds, waking me up. I stretched, a soft smile automatically forming on my lips as the memories of the night rushed back. The intensity, the vulnerability, the way Aron had held me after saving my life—it felt like the beginning of something real. Something beautiful.
I turned over, expecting to see his dark eyes looking back at me.
The spot next to me was empty. The sheets were cold.
"Aron?" I called out, my voice echoing through the quiet apartment.
I sat up, pulling the blanket around my shoulders, and walked into the living room. The clothes I had lent him were gone. The bandages and rubbing alcohol were still sitting on the coffee table, but there was no note. No text. Nothing.
A sudden, sinking feeling crashed into my chest, heavy and suffocating. The words I had yelled at myself in the shower the night before echoed in my mind with terrifying clarity: Get a grip. He’s just like every other man.
Tears pricked the corners of my eyes, but I forced them back, hardening my heart. He hadn't just saved me last night; he had used me. And I had let him.
How would you like the narrative to unfold from here? We can focus on Aron's high-stakes meeting with Viktor Vance, or dive deeper into Raven's resolve to confront him.
