The rain had barely stopped when Ariana stepped into the sleek black car waiting outside. Beside her, Damien gripped the flash drive as though it held the weight of the world.
The air between them was charged—less with fear now, and more with purpose.
Their destination: the Montclair private estate. Not for a reunion, but for answers.
“You’re sure your father won’t be there?” Ariana asked as they passed the high stone gates.
Damien shook his head. “He’s in Geneva for the week. But what we’re looking for isn’t in his office. It’s in the old vaults beneath the east wing—records from decades of business deals, offshore accounts, and classified archives. Things even Elena wouldn’t dare touch.”
The estate loomed before them, regal and cold. Ariana couldn’t help but feel like it was watching her, waiting.
Inside, Damien led the way through the marble corridors, past ancestral portraits with piercing gazes. At a locked door hidden behind a tapestry, he paused and turned to her.
“You sure you want to see what’s behind this?”
Ariana nodded. “I need to.”
Damien pressed his thumb to the biometric lock. The heavy door clicked open.
They stepped into a dimly lit archive, lined with steel cabinets and filing drawers. Dust hovered in the air like ghosts of secrets past.
Damien slid the flash drive into an encrypted terminal. Files loaded slowly—bank transfers, coded transactions, and names. Dozens of names.
But one stood out.
Eleanor Blackwood.
Ariana leaned closer. “That’s Elena’s real name?”
“Yes,” Damien confirmed grimly. “She changed it twenty years ago to marry into the Blackwood family. But before that—she was a Montclair associate. She worked for my father.”
Ariana’s eyes widened. “She was in your family’s inner circle?”
“She was more than that. She was my father’s fixer.”
Lines connected across the screen, tracing money from Liam’s last investigation back to companies that all linked to Elena—and further back, to Montclair shell corporations. It wasn’t just Elena who had something to lose.
It was Damien’s entire legacy.
Ariana turned to him. “This... this could destroy everything your family built.”
“I don’t care,” Damien said. “If they were involved in Liam’s death, if they tried to bury the truth—we expose them.”
Just then, a sound echoed through the hallway beyond the vault.
Footsteps.
Ariana froze. Damien instinctively stepped in front of her.
A shadow passed outside the door.
Someone was here.
He shut the terminal and quickly removed the drive. “We need to move—now.”
They slipped out the back corridor, through the wine cellar and up into the garden. The storm had left puddles along the stone paths, and Ariana’s heart raced with every step.
Behind them, the estate stood still—but now, it felt alive with danger.
Back in the car, Damien’s phone buzzed again. Another anonymous message.
> "You should’ve stayed out of the vault. Now you’ll learn what secrets cost.”
Ariana read it silently and looked at Damien.
“We can’t trust anyone, can we?”
He shook his head. “No. But maybe... it’s time to find someone we can.”
Ariana leaned back in the seat, breath shaky but resolve strong.
The truth was out there now—and with it, enemies in every shadow.
But she wasn’t that scared girl anymore.
She was a survivor.
And she was done being hunted.
The tires screeched as the car pulled into the underground garage beneath Damien’s penthouse. Both Ariana and Damien sat in silence for a beat, letting the weight of what they’d just uncovered settle over them.
“We’re in deeper than I thought,” Damien said, pulling the flash drive from his pocket.
Ariana looked at him. “And we can’t run from it. If Elena is just one part of this, then the whole system that protected her—your family’s connections, the off-shore accounts—all of it needs to come out.”
Damien nodded. “Even if it buries my family’s name.”
They stepped out of the car, but before they reached the elevator, Damien’s phone rang.
He frowned at the screen. “It’s Samuel. My cousin. We haven’t spoken in years.”
Ariana’s gaze narrowed. “Answer it. Put it on speaker.”
Damien did.
“Damien,” Samuel’s voice was hurried, almost breathless. “You need to get out of the city. Now. I saw your name attached to a trace request from an old file. They know you accessed the vault. And they’re coming.”
“Who?” Damien asked.
“You think Elena worked alone? She’s just the face. The ones behind her—they don’t leave loose ends. Whatever you found, they’ll kill to get it back.”
The line cut.
Damien and Ariana locked eyes.
Without a word, he grabbed the secure laptop and slipped the flash drive into it. “We’re backing this up. Then we’re sending copies to every major investigative journalist I know.”
Ariana stepped closer. “And we disappear?”
“No,” Damien said. “We fight. But smartly. Strategically. Like Liam would’ve done.”
As the files uploaded, a loud bang echoed through the building.
Ariana’s heart leapt. “What was that?”
Damien looked at the monitor. “Security breach. Someone’s trying to override the building’s main entrance.”
Her breath hitched. “They’re here.”
He grabbed her hand and led her down the emergency staircase. “There’s a private exit through the basement. Leads to the service tunnels. We get out, we go dark.”
Sirens wailed through the security system. The elevator was disabled. Footsteps pounded above them.
As they reached the lower level, Damien stopped, pulling her close.
“If something happens to me—”
“Don’t,” Ariana cut him off. “We both make it out. Together.”
They slipped through the underground tunnel, hearts racing, chased by shadows.
This wasn’t just about them anymore.
It was about truth.
Justice.
And survival.
The tunnels beneath the city were colder than Ariana expected—damp, echoing with each footstep as if the walls themselves whispered warnings. Damien led the way with a small tactical flashlight he’d grabbed from his emergency kit, his grip on Ariana’s hand unwavering.
“We’ll surface at an old maintenance shed five blocks from here,” he said, voice low and focused. “No security cams. No tracking.”
Ariana nodded, heart pounding in rhythm with their footsteps. “And from there?”
“I have a safe house outside the city. No digital footprint. We’ll be ghosts.”
They reached a rusted metal ladder. Damien climbed first, pushing open the loose hatch above. He scanned the alleyway with trained eyes, then extended a hand to help her up.
Rain misted the air. Thunder rumbled somewhere in the distance—ominous, but fitting.
As they stepped into the empty alley, Ariana paused.
“What happens after this?” she asked. “After we send the files. After we expose them.”
Damien turned, eyes steady. “Then we finally take control. No more hiding. No more being hunted.”
He pulled her gently into his arms.
“You’re not alone in this, Ariana. Not anymore.”
Before she could respond, a loud screech echoed down the alley—tires, fast, aggressive.
A black SUV turned the corner.
“Run!” Damien shouted, grabbing her hand again.
They sprinted toward the main road, zigzagging through side streets, adrenaline surging. Just as the SUV gained on them, a sudden burst of light and screeching brakes stopped it cold.
A delivery truck had blocked the path—its driver completely oblivious to what he’d just interrupted.
Damien used the moment of confusion to pull Ariana through a back door into an abandoned bookstore. They crouched behind the counter, breathless.
They could still hear footsteps outside. Voices.
“Find them!”
Ariana clutched Damien’s hand.
“We’re not safe anywhere, are we?”
Damien pulled her close, resting his forehead against hers.
“No,” he whispered. “But we’re together. And that’s our power.”
Outside, the storm resumed with force, drowning out footsteps as the pursuers scattered.
Inside, Ariana looked down at the flash drive Damien still held. It glinted in the dark like a key to both salvation and destruction.
They had the truth.
Now they just needed to survive long enough to use it.
The abandoned bookstore smelled of dust and fading ink. Ariana and Damien crouched behind the overturned counter, the sound of footsteps receding into the distance. Her chest rose and fell rapidly, lungs begging for air after the adrenaline-fueled chase.
She turned to Damien. “They’re hunting us like criminals.”
He nodded grimly. “Because to them, we are. We're a threat to their empire.”
Ariana slowly sat up, brushing dust from her knees. “So what now?”
“We send the files,” Damien said. “Every last one of them. Not just to journalists—politicians, watchdog agencies, international crime bureaus. If we blast it wide enough, they won’t be able to cover it up.”
Ariana hesitated, her eyes flickering to the flash drive. “And your family? Your father?”
Damien exhaled hard. “If he’s innocent, the truth won’t hurt him. But if he’s not—he’ll fall with the rest.”
A heavy silence filled the room.
Ariana looked at him, eyes soft but determined. “Liam once said that the truth doesn’t free you—it tests you. I didn’t understand it then, but now I do. We can’t stop now.”
Damien gave her a long look. “You’ve changed.”
“No,” she said. “I’ve just finally become who I was meant to be.”
Outside, the rain slowed. The city was starting to stir again—oblivious to the war building beneath its surface.
Damien pulled out a small portable hotspot and booted up his encrypted laptop. The files decrypted and transferred into a secure shared drive.
“Ready to send?”
Ariana nodded.
He clicked SEND.
The screen blinked. Transmission confirmed.
And with that, they’d set fire to the shadows.
Damien closed the laptop. “There’s no going back now.”
Ariana stood beside him, the dim glow of dawn peeking through the boarded windows.
“I don’t want to go back,” she whispered. “I want to finish this.”
He took her hand in his. “Then let’s bring it all down—together.”
