Chapter Ten: Torn Loyalties

2058 Words
The Blackwood Enterprises boardroom was colder than usual—not in temperature, but in tone. Elena Carrington sat at the head of the table, her heels crossed neatly, a faint smile on her lips. The remaining board members murmured among themselves, unsettled by the flurry of recent press leaks and rumors. Elena, of course, knew exactly where they came from. And she had more. Damien entered with the quiet authority only someone of his status could command. His tailored suit was immaculate, his eyes scanning the room, already aware of the undercurrent of tension. “Shall we begin?” he said, taking his place at the far end of the table, facing Elena. The meeting started with quarterly projections, department reports, and muted discussions of expansion. But it didn’t take long for Elena to strike. “I believe we need to revisit the issue of internal conflicts of interest,” she said, her tone crisp. “Specifically when personal relationships affect corporate reputation.” The room stilled. Damien raised a brow. “You’re referring to me, I presume.” Elena smirked. “Your wife is a frequent headline these days. Scandal doesn’t blend well with shareholder trust.” Damien leaned forward. “Ariana is not a scandal. She’s a survivor of one. And since marrying into this company’s name, our social engagement and brand relatability have doubled—which you conveniently failed to mention in your reports.” There were nods around the table. Elena’s smile faltered slightly, but she didn’t stop. “I have here,” she said, lifting a folder, “evidence suggesting that Mrs. D’Souza—your wife—was previously involved in a fraud case linked to Liam Hart. This could reflect—” Damien’s voice cut in, calm but lethal. “That case was closed. She was the victim, not the perpetrator.” He turned to the rest of the board. “Let me be clear. Anyone who uses my personal life to undermine company integrity is overstepping. Ariana is off-limits. Focus on the numbers—not the headlines.” A silence fell over the room. One by one, eyes turned toward Elena. Some agreed. Some hesitated. But all knew this—Damien was not someone to provoke. After the meeting, Elena stormed back into her office, slamming the folder on her desk. “He’s protecting her like she’s royalty.” A voice from behind startled her. “Maybe because she’s earned it.” Elijah stood at her door. “What do you want?” she spat. “You’ve crossed a line, Elena. Damien isn’t going to back down. And Ariana... she’s not the girl you think she is.” Elena’s eyes narrowed. “She’s a nobody. Just a girl who got lucky.” Elijah stepped forward. “No. She’s someone who’s survived everything you couldn’t. And now you’re afraid.” Elena laughed bitterly. “Afraid? Of her?” “Yes. Because for the first time, Damien is truly happy. And he’s building something stronger with her than he ever had with anyone here.” Elena’s smirk vanished. Her fists clenched. “Then I’ll tear her down. Brick by brick.” Elijah’s expression hardened. “If you do... you’ll destroy yourself first.” --- Meanwhile, back at the Blackwood estate, Ariana paced the garden, feeling the remnants of tension still in her shoulders. She wasn’t blind. She knew Elena wouldn’t stop. But what Elena didn’t know was that Ariana wasn’t alone anymore. Damien stepped outside, wrapping an arm around her from behind. “You were amazing this morning.” She leaned into him. “She’s going to come for me harder.” “She can try,” Damien said. “But she’ll learn—Blackwoods protect their own.” And as the wind rustled through the trees, Ariana knew something for certain: the real battle had just begun. Later that evening, Ariana sat in Damien’s study, reviewing legal documents while he typed away at his laptop. The fire crackled in the hearth, but the warmth in the room couldn’t quite ease the tightness in her chest. “Damien,” she said quietly, “Elena won’t stop until she ruins me. And I can’t let that happen—not to you. Not to this company.” Damien looked up from his screen. “Ariana, stop blaming yourself. This is on her. Not you.” “I know, but the board listens to her. She has history, legacy. I’m just... the outsider.” He rose from his chair and walked to her. “You’re not an outsider to me. Or to this company. You saved our biggest public campaign last quarter, and your charity initiative brought in millions in donations.” She gave a weak smile. “I’m still scared.” He cupped her cheek. “Then let’s be scared together. But we don’t run. We face this.” Suddenly, his phone buzzed. Damien glanced at it and frowned. “It’s from an anonymous number.” He opened the message. “Your wife’s past has more layers than you know. Ask her about the night she disappeared three years ago. Ask her about Cairo.” Ariana saw the shift in his expression. She froze. “What is it?” He hesitated. “Ariana... what happened in Cairo?” Her face went pale. “I—I thought that part of my life was buried,” she whispered. “No one was supposed to know.” Damien’s voice was low. “Tell me. I need to know everything.” Ariana stood, trembling slightly. “It was before I met Liam. I worked for a cultural NGO. We were transporting rare artifacts for a museum exhibition. I was naïve. I didn’t know one of the shipments contained stolen goods.” She turned away. “Interpol came in. People were arrested. I wasn’t charged, but my name was dragged through the mud. I fled the country, changed my name. That’s when I came back home.” Damien’s jaw clenched. “Why didn’t you tell me?” “Because I didn’t want you to look at me differently,” she whispered. He stepped closer. “Ariana, I married you because I saw strength, resilience, and honesty in you. You should’ve trusted me with this.” Tears welled in her eyes. “I’m sorry. I was scared it would destroy us.” He exhaled, then wrapped his arms around her tightly. “The only thing that could destroy us is if we stop being honest with each other.” She nodded against his chest. But neither of them noticed the small device blinking under the desk—the same one Elena had planted days ago, quietly recording every word. Far across town, Elena sat in her private office, headphones on, a slow, wicked smile spreading across her face. “Well, well, Ariana,” she murmured. “You’ve been hiding more than I thought.” She clicked ‘Download.’ “Let’s see how long Damien stands by you once the world hears everything.” The following morning, the weight of the previous night’s revelations still hung heavy between Damien and Ariana. Though they had reconciled, the tension was palpable—fragile trust tested by shadows of the past. Ariana dressed in silence, glancing at Damien from time to time. He was seated on the edge of the bed, staring into the distance, his phone in hand. The message still haunted them both. “I can hold a press conference,” she offered suddenly. “Come clean. I’d rather control the story than wait for Elena to leak it.” Damien turned to her, admiration and worry in his eyes. “You’re not the one who should suffer for someone else’s scheme. But... you might be right. If this comes out the wrong way, the fallout could be worse.” She approached him slowly, placing her hands on his shoulders. “Then let’s do it together. As a team.” He nodded. By noon, the Blackwood PR team was assembled. Cameras, microphones, and journalists filled the company atrium. Whispers rose as Ariana stepped up to the podium beside Damien—elegant, poised, yet visibly nervous. She cleared her throat. “My name is Ariana D’Souza Blackwood. Some of you know parts of my story. Others only know what’s been whispered. Today, I want to share the truth—not to defend myself, but to show that the past does not define the future.” She took a breath. “Three years ago, I was involved with an international NGO that was unknowingly smuggling stolen artifacts. I wasn’t charged—but my name was tarnished. I returned home, tried to rebuild my life. I’ve made mistakes. I’ve also worked hard to make amends.” The room was silent. “I never expected to marry someone like Damien Blackwood. But I did. And I love him. Not for his name, but for his heart.” Gasps rose from the crowd. Ariana pressed on. “I understand if this changes how some people see me. But I won’t apologize for surviving.” Behind her, Damien stepped forward, placing a hand on her shoulder. “And I won’t apologize for loving her.” The cameras flashed wildly. The message was clear—united front, undeniable loyalty. But in a penthouse office, Elena stared at the screen, rage boiling in her veins. “She beat me to it,” she hissed, pacing. “She turned scandal into sympathy.” A knock on her door pulled her from her thoughts. A man stepped in, tall, sharp-eyed, and unfamiliar to most. “Who are you?” Elena snapped. He smirked. “Someone who also wants her gone.” She narrowed her eyes. “I have information that wasn't in your files. About Liam Hart. About Ariana’s real family ties. And trust me—it’s much dirtier than Egypt.” Elena’s smile slowly returned. “Let’s talk.” As the day drew to a close, Ariana stood at the balcony of Damien’s penthouse, watching the city lights flicker like stars scattered across the ground. Behind her, Damien joined her in silence, his hand gently brushing against hers before linking their fingers. “I didn’t expect it to feel like this,” Ariana murmured, “to put it all out in the open and still feel... seen.” Damien squeezed her hand. “You were brave today. Not just for yourself—but for us.” She looked up at him. “Do you really think the board will still trust me now?” “I don’t care what the board thinks,” he said firmly. “But yes—I believe some of them will respect your honesty. And the rest? We’ll deal with them.” She exhaled slowly, the tightness in her chest loosening just a little. “And Elena?” Damien’s expression darkened. “She won’t stop. Today’s move cornered her, and that makes her more dangerous. But we’ll stay one step ahead.” Suddenly, his phone buzzed again. Another unknown number. He opened it hesitantly. Message: You’ve only heard her version. Look deeper. Liam’s death wasn’t what it seemed. —E Damien’s blood ran cold. He showed Ariana the message. She read it once, then twice. Her breath caught. “She’s lying,” Ariana whispered. “She has to be.” “Was Liam’s death... an accident?” Damien asked gently. “I thought it was,” she whispered. “He was found at the bottom of the cliff trail near our hometown. They said he slipped. There was an investigation... but nothing conclusive.” Damien’s jaw clenched. “And now she’s using it against you.” “She’s twisting everything,” Ariana said, eyes wide. “She wants to paint me as a liar. Or worse.” Damien looked out at the skyline, his mind racing. “If Elena wants war, she’ll get it. But this time, we fight with truth. We find out what really happened—to Liam, to your past, to everything.” Ariana nodded slowly, her heart pounding. “Then let’s start tonight.” From across the city, Elena watched from her surveillance console, eyes gleaming. “You’re digging in the wrong place, Ariana,” she said with a smirk. “But dig all you want. The truth won’t save you.”
