This strange liquid that has a mysterious energy allows some survivors who drink it to gain extraordinary strength, turning them into something akin to superhumans. In an apocalypse like this, that’s definitely a game-changer.
However, the odds of someone actually evolving after consuming these so-called zombie crystals are pretty slim. Out of a hundred survivors, you’d be lucky to find one person who has had this transformation. And not every zombie has a crystal in its brain, so spotting one or two in that crowd is considered fortunate.
On the flip side, Hannah Ye discovered that these zombie crystals could also be used to upgrade her leadership abilities.
With that in mind, Hannah turned to her companion, Ironhide, and instructed him, "Ironhide, I need you to go out and find us some food, especially mineral water and other supplies. And grab some zombie crystals too—just be careful not to be seen!"
Ironhide was an impressive fighter. With Xu Hai out of the picture, he was now under the watchful eyes of the Chinese military. Hannah couldn’t afford to lose him, as he was her best chance of survival right now. Her plan hinged on having a solid force when the Cybertron robots were fully operational.
"Understood, my master," he responded.
Without wasting a moment, Ironhide transformed into a sleek Corvette and drove off. On his way out, he noticed a Buick parked in the underground garage. With a quick scan, he transformed into that model instead and sped away.
While Ironhide was out on his mission, Hannah wasn’t sitting idle either. With her newfound immunity to the zombie virus, she knew she had to get ready. A zombie outbreak was expected in just two days, and it was crucial to stockpile supplies now.
So, she made her way back to her building, accompanied by her trusty laser bird. Armed with a gun, she started to scour the area for food.
The situation in the neighborhood was grim. Many people had already fallen victim to the disaster—about half of the survivors were gone. After a couple of chaotic days, only about ten percent remained, leaving just a few survivors scattered around.
When Hannah sent her laser bird to scan the building, it turned out there were only two people left: her and Leo Xiao. This actually worked to her advantage, as it meant she could collect supplies without worrying about others.
She headed to the second floor where she remembered a retired official used to live. The door was locked, but she thought it might hold something valuable.
"Laser bird!" she called out.
The little mechanical creature flew over to the door, ready to help. It had no trouble with the smart lock, and soon enough, the door clicked open.
As soon as the door swung wide, a zombie, an old man, lunged at her. But Hannah was prepared. The laser bird fired off a series of shots, taking the zombie down quickly.
After that, she asked the bird to check the body for any crystals, but found nothing.
"Tch. Being the protagonist doesn’t always mean good luck," she muttered frustratedly. "If only this system could grant me all the luck value! Imagine if every zombie I took out dropped crystals—that would really make things easier."
But there was no time to wallow in disappointment. She stepped into the apartment, noticing the interior was filled with old, elegant decor.
She went straight to the kitchen to search for food. Thankfully, she stumbled upon two unopened bags of rice and avoided anything else that was opened; even with her immunity, she didn’t want to take any chances with spoiled food.
Aside from rice, she also found some packaged noodles and a box of mineral water. In an apocalypse, clean water was worth its weight in gold, so she packed everything into a large box.
As she poked around, she even came across a box of West Lake Longjing tea.
"Tea leaves are like treasure in a world like this!" she thought. After an ice storm made tea trees scarce, they had become a luxury item.
Additionally, she discovered two unopened boxes of Maotai liquor and some sorghum liquor, along with a pack of expensive cigarettes. It looked like the former resident had lived quite comfortably.
"Wow! This old man was doing well for himself," Hannah remarked to herself. "But hey, what’s his is mine now!"
None of these items interested her personally, but they could be useful in bartering later on.
"If only I had a storage ring to make carrying this easier,” she mused. "Still, my leadership abilities should at least help with transporting everything. Worse comes to worst, I can just activate a truck and haul it all back."
After about half an hour, she had gathered everything outside and was feeling pretty exhausted. Thankfully, the potions she had taken previously had helped boost her strength.
As she opened the door to head back, Liu Xiao was waiting for her in the living room, looking somewhat anxious.
When he spotted her, he rushed over. "Hannah! Where have you been? You disappeared from me—I thought you’d left me behind..."
"Don’t be silly. This is my home," she replied lightly.
"Help me bring in these supplies," she ordered, gesturing to the boxes.
As Leo looked at the haul, he was taken aback. "Wow! Where did you get all this?"
Hannah filled him in. "Mr. Zhang, the retired official on the second floor, is gone. I gathered all of this from his place. With the apocalypse going on, it’s just the two of us left here—I thought we needed to stock up."
Understanding this, Liu Xiao jumped right in to help her carry everything inside.
"Why did you bring back so much tobacco and alcohol?" he wondered.
"You’ll see later," she replied with a casual wave of her hand.
Liu Xiao didn’t press the issue, but he was clearly keen to join her on her next outing.
"I’ll go with you next time. Two people are better than one," he suggested.
Hannah hesitated but finally relented. "Alright, but first, change out of those pajamas."
It was then that Liu Xiao realized he was still wearing his fancy, slightly transparent silk pajamas from the night before.
Hannah Ye felt a bit shy but quickly changed into the clothes she had borrowed from Liu Xiao. They looked good on her, so she moved past her embarrassment.
After changing, Hannah took Liu Xiao with her to gather supplies in their building. They didn’t want to go outside, where zombies lurked everywhere. Fortunately, the building seemed pretty safe. It had 18 floors, and for every two units, there was one staircase, making a total of 36 households. Just gathering supplies would take a while, but with Liu Xiao’s help, it definitely became easier.
Together, they worked efficiently. In just one day, they managed to collect supplies from half of the building! They scored a decent amount of food—three boxes of instant noodles, ten packs of ham sausages, more than twenty cans of fruit, six boxes of drinks, twelve boxes of yogurt, and ten packs of mineral water. They also found about five pounds of packaged bread and some fresh fruit, like apples and bananas, totaling around six pounds.
But that wasn’t all. They also stumbled upon quite a few cigarettes, bottles of liquor, and various kinds of tea. They ended up with ten boxes of liquor, twenty packs of cigarettes, and several boxes of tea. While it wasn’t anything fancy compared to what they might find elsewhere, these items could be quite useful down the road.
Looking around the room filled with their haul in the evening, Liu Xiao couldn’t help but feel excited. “Wow, there’s so much here! We could eat for weeks!” he said, beaming with pride.
Hannah, however, was a bit indifferent. In her past life, she had been a leader in a gang during the apocalypse and had seen warehouses overflowing with supplies—way more than they had gathered. So, she didn’t think much of the amount they had. But it was getting late, and after a light meal, they decided to rest early.
Later that night, Liu Xiao shyly crawled into Hannah’s bed, looking for comfort. “What are you doing?” she asked, surprised as she noticed how handsome he looked beside her. His shy but determined demeanor tugged at her heart. “I’m a little scared,” he whispered, wrapping his arms around her neck.
Seeing his vulnerability, Hannah’s heart went out to him. It was strange to think he felt scared; after all, he was conventionally good-looking and had always been confident. She wondered why he thought she was so calm in this chaotic world. But now, Liu Xiao took the step to be close to her, seeking reassurance.
Hannah, on the other hand, wasn’t pushing him away because of disinterest—she was simply haunted by the memories of her past life filled with disasters and survival. But spending time with someone like Liu Xiao—someone so beautiful, with a lovely voice and an amazing physique—made everything just a bit easier to bear.
As the night passed, Hannah found some peace, but the next morning came with a surprise. She was barely awake when she heard a cheerful mechanical voice, ** “Ding! Congratulations on surviving to the third day. Would you like to sign in today?” **
Instantly alert, she realized just how well she had slept the night before, probably because Liu Xiao had shared her bed.
Without thinking much, she responded, “Sign in!”
“Ding! Congratulations on successfully signing in!” the system chimed back. Then it offered her two options: one, a futuristic plasma technology gun that could cause serious damage to zombies, or two, a spatial ring that could store supplies.
Her interest was piqued at the mention of the spatial ring. Just the day before, she had been wondering how to carry more supplies. She didn’t even look at the gun; she felt like she had more than enough firepower with her current abilities. “I’ll take the spatial ring!” she declared.
“Ding! Congratulations to the host for obtaining the spatial ring +1!” A shimmering silver ring appeared in her palm. She quickly checked its details: it could store up to 10,000 cubic meters. This meant a lot of space for supplies! The bonus was that time inside the ring was paused, meaning her food wouldn’t be spoiled. She felt thrilled and knew this would make a huge difference in their survival.
Just then, she noticed Liu Xiao stirring beside her, rubbing his sleepy eyes. “What are you talking about?” he asked groggily.
“Oh, it’s nothing. Just complimenting your performance last night,” she teased, not intending to spill the details about the ring.
His cheeks flushed at that. Yes, he had been a bit too forward, but he couldn’t help it—being next to her had been overwhelming.
After sharing a light moment, Hannah decided it was time to get serious. “You stay here today and keep an eye on the supplies. I’m going to go out and look for more food. We need to stock up as much as possible while we can.”
Liu Xiao agreed, knowing how important it was to protect what they had gathered.
Before she left, Hannah left behind a little defense mechanism—a laser bird. It would alert her if anything went wrong while she was out.
Once everything was sorted, she ventured down to the underground parking lot where Iron Skin was already waiting for her.
“Good morning, respected master! You’re here!” he said as she approached.
“Yeah,” Hannah replied, nodding. “How did yesterday go?”
Iron Skin wasted no time and revealed the food he had collected—more bread, yogurt, water, and some snacks. “I checked everything; there’s no trace of the zombie virus.”
Feeling a sense of relief, she focused on what more they could find to ensure their survival in this unforgiving world.
