Rafe was as sure-footed as a cat. He could have been resident in Hood River for years. He navigated the labyrinthine netherzones quickly and silently, pausing every few moments to decide his course, but never taking long about it. The darkness closed in on Delilah, reminding her of the years she had spent in the netherzones at the Citadel, crippling her with a sense of failure. The shadows and the smell suffocated her, made her desperate to escape. It sapped her strength and left her feeling helpless and captive.
