Chapter 7:part two

The brief sanctuary of the hearth was shattered when Talia’s heavy boots clicked against the stone tiles. Ramond broke the kiss slowly, his forehead resting against Lizzie’s for a lingering second, his thumb tracing her jawline as if anchoring her scent to his memory. When he stood, the soft, devoted lover vanished, replaced instantly by the stoic commander of the Blackwood guard. But as he took his place by Lizzie's side, his hand remained tightly clasped in hers, his fingers interwoven with her clean ones.Talia approached, her sharp eyes darting down to their joined hands. A faint, knowing smirk touched the corner of the alpha leader's lips, but she made no comment on the breach of traditional pack protocol. The world was changing, and the rules of the old pack were burning in the courtyard outside."The scouts report the enemy is regrouping near the northern palisade," Talia said, her voice businesslike as she leaned against the map table. "They took heavy losses at the windows, thanks to your warning, Lizzie. But their main commander—Vane—hasn't joined the fray yet. He's waiting for us to tire out.""Vane won't wait much longer," Ramond said, his voice hardening as his protective instincts flared. He looked down at Lizzie, his grip tightening slightly. "He knows the longer this drags on, the higher the chance neighboring packs see the smoke and send reinforcements. He'll launch a final, desperate push through the main gate.""And we'll be ready," Talia agreed. She looked at Lizzie, her expression softening into something resembling maternal pride. "Lizzie, you’ve proven your worth tonight. You aren't going down to the cellars with the non-combatants. I need you here, helping me coordinate the archers' supply lines. But if the line breaks...""She stays behind me," Ramond interrupted fiercely, stepping half a pace in front of Lizzie, his wolf rising to the surface at the mere thought of her in danger again. "I will not lose her, Talia."Lizzie stepped around Ramond’s broad shoulder, refusing to let him hide her away. "I can take care of myself, Ramond. You saw that in the courtyard." She looked up at him, her eyes shining with a mixture of love and fierce defiance. "I want to be your strength, not your weakness. If you're fighting at the gates, I need to know you're focusing on the enemy, not constantly looking back to see if I'm breathing."Ramond stared at her, the internal conflict tearing through him visible in the tightening of his jaw. He was a creature of traditional protective instincts, bred to shield his mate from every harsh wind. But as he looked into Lizzie's resolute eyes, he saw the survivor he had fallen in love with. She wasn't a fragile flower to be caged; she was a wildfire that would burn anyone who tried to snuff her out.He let out a long, ragged breath, a look of profound submission crossing his face as he bowed his head to her will. "You are my strength, Lizzie. Never doubt that." He reached into his tunic and pulled out a small, silver medallion on a leather cord—the crest of his personal lineage. He slipped it over her head, letting the cool metal rest against her collarbone. "Wear this. It lets every warrior in this hall know that to touch you is to summon my wrath. If I fall—""You won't fall," Lizzie interrupted, reaching up to grip the fabric of his tunic, pulling him down into another brief, fierce kiss that sealed the promise. "Because I’ll be right here waiting to clean your blade again."Ramond’s blue eyes flared with a dangerous, triumphant light. He grabbed his broadsword from the floor, the steel ringing as he lifted it into a guard position. The distant sound of a battering ram began to echo against the outer palisade, signaling the start of the final wave.Talia drew her weapon, a fierce battle cry bubbling in her throat. "To the gates!" she roared. As Ramond turned to lead his men out into the smoke, he threw one last look over his shoulder at Lizzie. She stood by the hearth, the silver medallion gleaming against her chest, her hand resting on the hilt of her small steel dagger. She was no longer the frightened girl who had arrived at Blackwood in chains. She was the mate of an alpha, a warrior in her own right, and the future of the pack.
