chapter 2:part two

The heavy oak door of the Alpha’s quarters clicked open, breaking the tense silence that had settled between Ramond and Lizzie. A pack healer named Martha stepped inside, her arms laden with a wooden tray holding a steaming bowl of wild herb broth and freshly baked bread. Her kind, wrinkled eyes immediately softened as they landed on Lizzie, who instinctively clutched the heavy furs closer to her collarbone."Ah, the goddess has been busy, I see," Martha murmured, her voice warm and carrying the soothing cadence of a mother. She didn't approach the bed immediately. Instead, she set the tray on a nearby low table, giving Lizzie ample space to adjust to her presence. "Don't look so frightened, little one. You're in the heart of the Blackwood territory now. No harm will come to you here."Lizzie’s gaze darted from the older woman back to Ramond, who still stood by the floor-to-ceiling window. The sheer size of him was enough to terrify any wandering omega, yet the primal spark deep within her chest—the golden thread of the mate bond—kept her from bolting out the window. It hummed beneath her skin, a low, comforting vibration that counteracted the sheer panic screaming in her head."Martha has been the pack’s head healer since my father’s time," Ramond said, taking a deliberate, slow step forward. He kept his hands raised slightly, palms open, showing he carried no weapons and meant no harm. "She is here to help you heal, Lizzie. Your fever broke only an hour ago.""My... my name," Lizzie whispered, her voice raspy from disuse and dehydration. She cleared her throat, her eyes widening slightly. "How do you know my name? I didn't tell you."A faint, rare smile tugged at the corner of Ramond’s hard jawline. The sound of her voice, soft and musical despite her exhaustion, sent a thrill straight through his midnight-black wolf. She speaks to us, the beast growled happily, pacing with newfound contentment."When the mate bond snaps into place, Lizzie, we share more than just scents," Ramond explained gently, stopping a few feet from the edge of the bed to respect her boundaries. "I felt your name in my mind the moment our eyes met at the border. Just as you know mine."Lizzie swallowed hard, shifting her weight slightly beneath the heavy quilts. He was right. The name Ramond sat perfectly on her tongue, familiar and solid, like a word she had known her entire life but had only just remembered how to speak. It was a terrifying concept for someone who had spent the last two years running from pack to pack, trusting no one, and treating every alpha she encountered as a predator to be avoided at all costs.Martha approached the bedside slowly, holding out the bowl of broth. "Drink this, child. It has silver-leaf root and honey to soothe your throat and restore your strength. You've been running for a very long time, haven't you?"Lizzie reached out, her hands trembling as she took the warm ceramic bowl. The rich, savory aroma of the broth immediately made her stomach growl, a sharp reminder of how long it had been since her last proper meal. She took a hesitant sip, the liquid spreading a comforting, healing warmth through her chest. As she drank, Ramond watched her with an intensity that made the air in the room feel thick. He could see the faint, fading bruises on her slender wrists—marks left by rough hands. He could smell the lingering scent of old fear and cheap iron-dust, a substance rogues used to mask their tracks. Every instinct in his body screamed at him to demand answers, to find out exactly who had dared to lay a hand on his fated mate so he could hunt them down and tear them apart piece by piece. But he forced his dominant alpha aura down, burying it deep beneath a layer of calm serenity. If he let his anger leak out now, she would think it was directed at her."Marcus told me the Blood Moon rogues were tracking you," Ramond said, his voice dropping to a low, serious register that still managed to remain gentle. "He found their scouts skirting our eastern perimeter. Lizzie... why is an omega from the southern valleys being hunted by a rogue pack?"Lizzie froze, the spoon hovering inches from her lips. The warmth of the broth suddenly felt like ice in her stomach. The memories came rushing back in a violent, suffocating wave: the sound of tearing flesh, the smell of burning wood, and the cruel, mocking laughter of the Blood Moon Alpha as her birth pack was systematically dismantled."They didn't just hunt me," Lizzie whispered, her eyes staring blankly into the dark liquid of the bowl, tears blurring her vision. "They destroyed us. They killed my Alpha, enslaved the betas, and... and they wanted the omegas as trophies. I ran. I've been running for six months."She looked up, her green eyes wide and glittering with a mixture of raw trauma and defiance. "If they find out I am here, they won't just leave. They will bring an army to your gates, Alpha Ramond. I am a curse. You should throw me back into the woods before they bring war to your people."Before she could spiral further into panic, Ramond was moving. In two swift, silent strides, he closed the distance between them. He didn't touch her, but he leaned in close enough that she could feel the radiating heat of his body. His blue eyes blazed with a fierce, absolute certainty.certainty."Let them bring their army," Ramond growled, the sheer power of his voice vibrating through the floorboards, not in anger at her, but in a declaration of war against her tormentors. "The Blackwood pack does not fear rogues, Lizzie. And an Alpha does not abandon his mate to monsters. You are under my protection now. This room, this pack, this territory—it is your fortress. Anyone who wishes to harm you will have to walk through my corpse first."Lizzie stared at him, her breath catching in her throat. For the first time in six months, as she looked into the unwavering gaze of her fated mate, the crushing weight of terror began to lift, replaced by the incredible realization that she was no longer running alone.
