Chapter 10:part two

The air inside the inner council chamber was thick with the scent of old parchment, stale sweat, and an overarching, nervous tension. A dozen pack elders sat around the massive mahogany table, their faces etched with deep lines of worry. Talia sat at the head of the table, her broadsword leaning against her chair, her sharp eyes scanning the room like a hawk watching a field of mice. When the heavy wooden doors swung open, a collective breath caught in the room.Ramond walked in first, but he didn't assume his usual position standing guard at the perimeter. Instead, he kept his hand firmly clasped in Lizzie’s, leading her directly to the table. He pulled out a heavy oak chair right beside Talia’s right flank—a seat traditionally reserved for the second-in-command—and waited for Lizzie to sit."Commander," Elder Haddon, a gray-haired alpha with a deeply conservative mindset, cleared his throat uncomfortably. "We appreciate your valor in slaying Vane, but... the council chamber is no place for an unbonded omega. This is a secure gathering to discuss the rebuilding of our defenses."Ramond didn't raise his voice. He didn't draw his sword. He simply turned his gaze to Haddon, his blue eyes freezing into arctic shards. The sheer weight of his alpha aura flooded the room, heavy and suffocating, making several elders visibly flinch."The omega you are speaking to," Ramond said, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that echoed off the stone walls, "is the reason your grandchildren weren't butchered by Vane’s vanguard in the cellar. She is the one who identified the enemy’s strategy at the high windows. If she does not sit at this table, then neither do I. And if I leave, my warriors leave with me."A frantic whisper broke out among the elders. The pack had lost nearly a third of its fighting force in the siege; losing Ramond and his loyalists would leave Blackwood utterly defenseless against any retaliatory strikes from rival territories.Talia raised a single hand, silencing the room instantly. A faint, proud smirk touched the alpha leader's lips as she looked at Lizzie, then at Ramond. "The Commander speaks the truth," Talia declared, her voice carrying absolute authority. "The old laws dictated that strength was measured solely by physical dominance. But last night, Blackwood survived because of strategy, courage, and defiance. Traits that Lizzie displayed in abundance."Talia leaned forward, resting her forearms on the table. "As of today, the caste restrictions regarding military and tactical contribution are dissolved. Any member of this pack, regardless of secondary gender, who wishes to train, will be permitted to do so. And Lizzie will oversee the reorganization of our supply lines and internal defense mapping."Haddon looked as though he had swallowed a stone, but under Talia’s piercing gaze and Ramond’s silent, lethal threat, he slowly bowed his head. "As the Alpha commands," he muttered.Lizzie sat tall, her heart racing, but she didn't let her posture waiver. She felt Ramond’s hand slide under the table, his large fingers intertwining with hers, squeezing gently. The silent support gave her all the courage she needed. She looked across the map of their ruined territory and began to speak, her voice clear and authoritative as she pointed out the flaws in their previous perimeter design. The meeting lasted for hours, but when the council finally dismissed, a monumental shift had occurred. As the elders filed out, giving Lizzie a wide, respectful berth, the chamber grew quiet. Only Talia remained, gathering her papers."You handled yourself well, Lizzie," Talia said without looking up, a rare softness in her tone. "And you, Ramond. I haven't seen you growl like that since you were a pup fighting for your first kill.""She is my mate, Talia," Ramond said simply, his voice returning to its normal, rich warmth as he looked down at Lizzie. "I will growl at the world if it means keeping her safe and respected."Talia let out a short, bark of laughter, shaking her head as she exited the room. "Just make sure you save some of that energy for the rebuilding, Commander."Once the doors closed, leaving them entirely alone in the grand room, Ramond turned to Lizzie. Without a word, he reached down, scooped her up out of her chair, and sat down in it himself, settling her comfortably onto his lap. Lizzie laughed softly, wrapping her arms around his neck as he buried his face in the crook of her shoulder, inhaling deeply."We did it," she whispered, her fingers running through the thick strands of his hair. "They listened.""They had no choice," Ramond murmured, his lips brushing against the sensitive skin of her neck, making her gasp softly. He pulled back just enough to look into her eyes, his expression fiercely devoted. "You changed this pack today, Lizzie. But more importantly, you changed me. I used to think my wolf only wanted a mate to protect. But I realize now, I wanted a mate who would inspire me. You are my queen."He leaned in, his mouth capturing hers in a slow, deep kiss that tasted of absolute victory and a quiet, beautiful peace. There were still walls to rebuild, and a territory to secure, but sitting in the quiet council chamber, wrapped in the arms of the alpha who loved her as an equal, Lizzie knew the hardest battle had already been won.
