SELENA’S POV
She looked around.
The place was so grand. She had only been to a place like this when she was working at the hotel.
The Tipton hotel was the best hotel in Syracuse and it was for the best.
She wondered if he lived here and then she started to wonder if all restaurants have compartments like this for people.
“Do you live here?” She asked him once he had come in.
He smiled, a boyish grin. “No I don’t. I just own a space here.”
“But you have your own home don’t you?” She asked him.
“I see.” She nodded.
But she didn’t see.
How could a man who already have his own house need a space here?
“Sometimes I take a break here because I want space from my usual comfort.” He said.
“Usual comfort?” She said in alarm. “If this was not his usual comfort, then what was?
He laughed at her. Not mockingly though.
He just laughed.
“The rich are hard to comprehend.” She said.
“Actually I own the building.” He said.
“You own this place?!” She gasped.
He smiled. “I had only told you that hoping that it would make you see reason as to why I come here sometimes. It seemed like it only made matters worse.”
She shut her mouth quickly.
“I’m sorry.” She apologised. “I didn’t mean it.”
“No Offenes taken.” He said to her.
“I was just surprised.”
“Here drink this.” He said.
Only then did she realise that he was standing with a glass of wine in his hand.
“It would help with the pain.” He said.
She took it from and she drank it.
She wanted to stop, but he stopped her.
“No drink it all.” He Said and then she did.
“Feel any better?” He asked her.
She nodded, still feeling a bit numb. But she actually was feeling much better.
Then he sat down beside her and opened a box.
It was a first aid box.
He seemed angry.
“You were injured.” He said gently touching her forehead.
Was he just noticing or what exactly? She could not understand why he was angry.
Then he said nothing and then he put some cotton wool on her forehead and massaged it for her.
“Does the pain seem to ease?” He asked her.
She nodded even though it hurt like hell.
He gently cleaned her forehead and soon put a bandage over it.
All through the while no one said a word.
“Thank you.” Selina managed.
“My pleasure.” He said. “How long has that boy been troubling you?”
She bit her lip.
“Don’t do that.” He said.
Then she remembered that she had been injured there too.
“Oh I’m sorrry”. She apologised.
“You apologise for everything.” He said in surprise.
“Is that a bad thing?” She asked him.
“Not bad, no not bad. But quite unusual.” He said.
Then he cleaned her lip. She had seen him hesitate at first, before finally proceeding to it.
“I’ve known him since I was in high school.” She said. “He is from a reich family and he doesn’t keep that to himself. So everyone pretty much knows him around here.”
“And?” He asked her.
She shrugged. “Well he has been pursuing me. But I was not interested. My papa would not approve of me being with a man at my age.”
“Your father is protective.” He said.
She nodded. “I’m the only one he has. If I go, he could die. He would not survive. I lost my mother during childbirth. I never met her and he raised me himself. It’s just been me and him ever since.”
“And are you in a relationship with anyone? Perhaps engaged.” He asked her.
She shook her head. “No, I have not. I have never been in love like most of my friends.”
“Why did he slap you?” He asked.
“Because he kissed me and I bit him back.” She said.
“Have you ever been kissed before?”
She shook her head. “No this was my first time.”
He said nothing and then he carried on with the entire cleaning process.
“Would you like something to eat?” He asked her.
She shook her head.
“No, thank you. I need to be home.” She said.
“But you said your father is away.”
She nodded. “Yes, but then it is not decent for a girl to be with a man by such time. Father Marino would frown at it. And besides that, I have to be preparing for work tomorrow.”
He nodded and then he got up.
“I would get you a new shirt now.” He said.
Then he left and shook he returned but with a white long sleeve button up shirt.
“I don’t keep female company here.” He said. “This is all I have.”
She smiled. “Thank you. It would do.”
She received it from him and then he walked away so that she could dress.
She peeled off the turn shirt and proceeded to wearing the new one he had just given her.
It smelled heavenly.
“You can come in now sir.” She said.
Then he came.
“How did you know where I was?” She asked him.
“You saved me from nowhere. Like an Angel.” She said.
“I was passing by and I had not left yet when I heard you scream.” He said.
Then his brows piqued.
“You screamed, why did no one come out to help you?” He asked.
She laughed uneasily.
“That is what I have been telling you sir.” She said. “In these part of Syracuse, Felix’s father rules. No one could have saved me even if they wanted to. That is why I am worried for you. You have saved me, but you have gotten yourself into trouble. I wish you hadn’t come.”
“Don’t say that.”
And she felt herself freeze at his authority.
“If I hadn’t been there I don’t want to even think of what would have happened.” He said.
And she shivered at the thought of it.
“I have told you not to worry about a single thing.” He said. “No harm would come to you. I give you my word. In fact, Felix is never going to disturb you in his entire life again.”
She saw the darkness in his eyes and for a second she was frightened and soon it was gone.
It was gone as quickly as it had come.
“Let’s go.” He said.
They didn’t follow the front when they were going, instead they followed the back.
This time she insisted that she could walk on her own, which she eventually did.
As soon as they were in the car, she turned to him.
“Thank you for everything.” She said. “You do not even know me, but you have helped me so much.”
He smiled. “Of course I know you. You are the girl from the restaurant I just met today.”
And she smiled at his joke.
Then she gave him directions to her house.
When they were close by, she insisted that he stop.
“You’ve done enough for me already.” She said when he complained.
“My house isn’t far from here.” She said. “And moreover my neighbours are around. Nothing can happen to me.”
“Let me just drive you there.” He said.
“Thank you. You have really done more than enough for me.” She said.
He nodded.
Then she carried her bag and got out of the car and walked away with his headlights bright behind her until she could not see them anymore.
Then she turned and as soon as she was sure he was gone, it dawned on her that she did not even know his name.
