I didn’t sleep that night.
Every sound felt louder. Every shadow felt alive.
And his words… they wouldn’t leave my head.
*“I know what you did.”*
I sat on my bed, staring at my phone. The unknown number was still there. No name. No picture. Just silence after that one message.
Who was he?
And how did he know?
My hands trembled as I typed.
What do you want?”
The reply came instantly.
Come outside.”
My heart dropped.
Slowly, I stood up, my feet feeling heavy against the cold floor. I moved toward the window, pulling the curtain just slightly.
And then I saw him.
Standing under the streetlight.
The same man from earlier.
Dark clothes. Still. Watching.
Waiting.
My breath caught in my throat.
He lifted his head slowly… and smiled.
I stepped back immediately, my heart pounding wildly. This was insane. I shouldn’t go out there. I shouldn’t even respond.
But something inside me fear… curiosity… guilt pulled me forward.
Before I could stop myself, I grabbed my hoodie and walked out.
Each step felt like a mistake.
The night air hit my skin as I stepped outside. The street was empty, too quiet, like the world had paused just for this moment.
He didn’t move.
Not until I got closer.
“You shouldn’t be here,” I said, trying to sound strong, but my voice betrayed me.
He chuckled softly. “But you came anyway.”
I stopped a few steps away from him. “Who are you?”
He tilted his head, studying me like I was a puzzle he had already solved.
“That’s not the right question.”
My patience snapped. “Then what is?!”
His expression darkened.
“The right question is… how long did you think you could hide it?”
My chest tightened.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I lied quickly.
He stepped closer.
One step.
Then another.
Until there was barely any space between us.
“You ran,” he said quietly. “You erased everything. You changed your life… your name… your friends.”
My heart nearly stopped.
“How
“But you forgot one thing,” he interrupted.
His eyes locked into mine.
“You can’t erase the past.”
A cold wave of fear rushed through me.
“Say it,” he whispered. “Say what you did.”
“I didn’t do anything!” I snapped, panic rising.
He smiled again but this time, it wasn’t friendly.
It was knowing.
Dangerous.
“I saw you that night.”
The world around me froze.
My breathing became uneven.
“No…” I whispered.
“Yes,” he said calmly. “The rain. The car. The scream.”
Tears filled my eyes instantly.
“Stop…” I begged.
But he leaned closer, his voice dropping to a whisper that felt like a knife to my chest.
“You left him there.”
Silence.
Heavy. Crushing silence.
My knees felt weak.
“How do you know that…?” I whispered, my voice breaking.
He stepped back slowly, slipping his hands into his pockets.
“Because,” he said, his tone now cold and final
“I wasn’t supposed to survive.”
My eyes widened in horror.
Everything inside me shattered.
Because in that moment…
I realized
The man who knew my secret…
Was the one secret I thought was buried forever.
