The silence between us felt heavier than words.
I could hear my own heartbeat—loud, uneven, betraying me.
Daniel stepped closer.
Not rushed. Not hesitant. Just… certain.
“You finally remember,” he said softly.
His voice wasn’t accusing.
It was… relieved.
But that didn’t make it better.
It made it worse.
“Stop,” I whispered, stepping back. My hands trembled as I shook my head. “Don’t come closer.”
He froze instantly.
That’s what scared me the most.
Daniel had never been someone who stopped.
Not for anyone.
Not even for me.
Until now.
“You disappeared,” I said, my voice breaking as the memories flooded harder. “That night… you promised me you wouldn’t leave. You said you’d stay no matter what.”
His jaw tightened.
“I tried,” he said.
“Don’t lie!” I snapped, louder than I intended. Tears burned my eyes. “You left me, Daniel. You left me when I needed you the most.”
The room seemed to shrink around us.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he ran a hand through his hair, exhaling deeply like he’d been holding in something for years.
“I didn’t leave you,” he said quietly. “I was taken away.”
My breath hitched.
“What?”
His eyes met mine—dark, intense, carrying a pain I had never seen before.
“They found out about us,” he continued. “About what we knew.”
A chill ran down my spine.
“What we knew…?” I repeated slowly.
And then—
It hit me.
Fragments. Broken pieces of memory snapping into place like shattered glass.
The notebook.
The names.
The night we weren’t supposed to see what we saw.
“Oh my God…” I whispered, my hands covering my mouth. “That wasn’t just an accident, was it?”
Daniel shook his head.
“No,” he said. “It never was.”
The air turned cold.
Everything I thought I knew… everything I believed was just a tragic coincidence…
It wasn’t.
It was planned.
“Who?” I asked, my voice barely audible. “Who would do something like that?”
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he reached into his jacket.
My body tensed.
But he didn’t pull out anything dangerous.
Just a folded piece of paper.
Old. Worn. Like it had been carried for too long.
“I’ve been waiting for the right time to show you this,” he said.
My hands shook as I took it from him.
Slowly… carefully… I unfolded it.
And my world stopped.
Because written on that paper…
Was a list of names.
Some crossed out.
Some circled.
And one—
One that made my heart drop to my stomach.
My name.
“Elena…” I whispered, staring at it. “Why is my name on this?”
Daniel didn’t look surprised.
He looked… defeated.
“Because you were never just a witness,” he said.
“You were the target.”
The words didn’t register at first.
They floated in the air, distant, unreal.
Then they crashed into me all at once.
“No,” I said, shaking my head. “No, that doesn’t make sense. Why would anyone—”
“Because of your father.”
Everything went silent.
“My… father?” My voice came out small, fragile.
Daniel nodded slowly.
“You don’t remember him the way you should,” he said. “And that’s not your fault. They made sure of that.”
My chest tightened.
“What are you talking about?”
He stepped closer again—but this time, I didn’t move away.
“Your father wasn’t just some businessman, Elena,” Daniel said. “He was involved in something bigger. Something dangerous.”
I felt dizzy.
Like the ground beneath me wasn’t real anymore.
“No… that’s not true,” I said weakly. “He died in an accident.”
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“That’s what they wanted you to believe.”
My knees almost gave out.
“So you’re saying…” I struggled to breathe. “Everything… my past… it’s all a lie?”
“Not everything,” he said gently. “But enough to keep you from the truth.”
Tears slipped down my cheeks.
“And you?” I asked, looking at him through blurred vision. “Where do you fit into all of this?”
For the first time since I’d known him…
Daniel hesitated.
And that scared me more than anything.
“I was supposed to protect you,” he said finally.
The words hung between us.
“Supposed to?” I repeated.
His silence answered me.
Something inside me cracked.
“You failed,” I whispered.
“I know.”
No defense.
No excuse.
Just the truth.
And somehow… that hurt more.
“I didn’t just lose my memories, Daniel,” I said, my voice trembling. “I lost years of my life. I lost myself. Do you have any idea what that feels like?”
His eyes softened, filled with regret.
“Yes,” he said quietly. “Because I lost you too.”
The vulnerability in his voice caught me off guard.
But I wasn’t ready to forgive him.
Not yet.
Maybe not ever.
“Why come back now?” I asked.
“Because they’re coming for you again.”
My heart stopped.
“What…?”
“They know you’re starting to remember,” he said urgently. “And if you remember everything…”
He didn’t finish.
He didn’t need to.
I already understood.
“They’ll kill me,” I whispered.
Daniel’s gaze hardened.
“Not if I get to them first.”
A knock echoed suddenly through the room.
Sharp.
Unexpected.
Both of us froze.
My heart began to race.
“Are you expecting someone?” Daniel asked quietly.
I shook my head.
Another knock.
Louder this time.
More aggressive.
Fear crept up my spine.
“Don’t open it,” Daniel said immediately.
But it was too late.
Because the door handle—
Moved.
My breath caught in my throat.
The door slowly creaked open.
And standing there…
Was someone I never expected to see again.
Someone I thought was gone forever.
“Hello, Elena.”
The voice sent chills through my entire body.
Because I knew that voice.
I just never thought I’d hear it again.
My lips parted in shock.
“Dad…?”
To be continued…
