Chapter Two

1020 Words
Detective Liam Reed sipped his coffee, gazing out at the city’s bustling streets. His mind wandered to the cold cup of coffee on his desk, a constant reminder of his sister’s unsolved murder case. Three years had passed, but the pain still lingered, fueling his determination to bring justice to those who thought themselves above the law. A knock at the door broke his reverie. His partner, Lucas entered with a file. “New case, Liam. High-profile businessman found dead in his penthouse.” Liam’s eyes narrowed. “Any leads?” Lucas shook his head. “None yet. But the victim had some shady connections. We might be looking at a professional hit”. Liam’s gaze intensified. “Let’s get to work, then” As they began processing the scene, Liam’s trained eyes took in every detail. The victim, Richard Langley, lay on the floor, a single s***h on his throat covered in his own pool of blood. The room was immaculate aside from the crime scene, no signs of forced entry or struggle. The Red Hand organization had sent their “cleaners” to clear all evidence immediately after Kaida left the scene. Lucas handed Liam a photo of the victim. “Langley was a wealthy businessman with ties to several criminal organizations. He had a reputation for being ruthless in his dealings”. Liam’s eyes scanned the photo, his mind working overtime. “I want a list of all his known associates and business partners. Let’s see if anyone had a grudge against him.” As they continued to investigate, a mysterious figure watched from the shadows, a whisper echoing in their mind: Liam Reed, you are getting close to the truth. But will you survive long enough to uncover it?” Liam’s phone rang, breaking the silence. He answered, his expression grim. “What is it?” “We found something, Liam, “the voice on the other end said. “A security camera caught a glimpse of the killer. But the footage is grainy, and we can’t make out the face.” Liam’s heart raced. “Send it to me anyway. Maybe we can enhance it”. As they waited for the footage to arrive, the mysterious figure in the shadows smiled, a cold, calculated smile. Liam Reed was getting close, but he would never see it coming. Liam’s phone buzzed, and he opened the footage. His eyes scanned the grainy image, but the killer’s face was impossible to make out. “Lucas, we need to keep working on this,” Liam said, his voice firm. “I want every available resource on this case. We need to find out who killed Langley and why”. As the investigation continued, Liam and Lucas followed every lead, every tip, and every shred of evidence. They interviewed Langley’s business partners, his family and his friends, but no one seemed to have any information about the killer. Days turned into weeks, and the case was starting to go cold. Liam was frustrated, but he refused to give up. He knew that every unsolved case was a failure, and he couldn't bear the thought of letting Langley's killer get away. One night, as he was leaving the precinct after a long day, Liam received a mysterious package. Inside, he found a small USB drive with a note that read: “Look closer, Detective.” Liam inserted the drive into his computer and found a single file: a video. The footage was grainy, but it showed a figure lurking in the shadows outside Langley’s penthouse on the night of the murder. Liam’s heart raced as he realized that this could be the break they needed. He called Lucas and they started enhancing the footage, trying to get a clear image of the killer’s face. But as they worked, Liam could not shake the feeling that they were being watched. He looked around the precinct, but saw nothing out of the ordinary. And then, just as they were about to get a clear image of the killer’s face, the computer screen went black. The USB drive had been hacked, and the evidence was gone. Liam’s eyes met Lucas’, and they knew they were in trouble. They had just been outsmarted by the killer, and they were running out of time. Liam's mind raced as he tried to process what had just happened. The killer had not only evaded them but had also managed to hack into their computer system. It was a bold move, and Liam knew they had to act fast to stay one step ahead. "Lucas, we need to get our tech team on this ASAP," Liam said, his voice firm. "We need to know how they hacked us and what else they might have accessed." Lucas nodded and quickly made the call. Meanwhile, Liam couldn't shake off the feeling that they were in over their heads. The killer seemed to be always one step ahead, and Liam wondered if they had underestimated them from the start. As they waited for the tech team to arrive, Liam's phone rang. It was an unknown number, and Liam hesitated for a moment before answering. "Detective Reed," a voice said on the other end. "You're getting close, but you'll never catch me." Liam's grip on the phone tightened. "Who is this?" "You know who I am," the voice replied. "And soon, you'll know why I killed Richard Langley." The line went dead, and Liam was left with more questions than answers. Who was this killer, and what was their motive? The tech team arrived, and Liam briefed them on what had happened. They quickly got to work, tracing the hack and trying to identify the killer's digital footprint. As they worked, Liam couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. The killer seemed to be playing a game with them, and Liam wasn't sure what the next move would be. But one thing was certain: Liam Reed was not going to back down. He would stop at nothing to bring the killer to justice, no matter what it took.
