Meet Mate

"Mel! Mel! Hurry the next shift is going to be here in like five minutes!"     I laugh as me and Grace finish our rounds quickly, we needed to be done by the time the next shift comes or else they complain about everything under the sun. I finish changing my last resident when I hear the door slam and I rush to the front of the unit that I was working in for the day. Grace gave report so I just grab my bag and smiled and waved to the upcoming shift. I did love my job, but I was always glad to leave at the end of the day.     Grace meets my side as we punch in our time at the time clock and her eyes widen we she says, "Did you here about the cougar?"     I laugh at her expression, "Cougar?"     She nods enthusiastically and explains, "No really though! Matt, the maintenance worker was fixing up the fencing that was torn through yesterday when he noticed that there were claw marks scratched all over the tree by the dumpster. There have been known cougar sightings, so we are supposed to walk with a partner when going to our cars."     I smile an shake me head, "Aw, just a little old cougar wanting to come say hello!"     Her terrified look does it in for me and I bend over hysterically laughing. She doesn't find anything funny when she say, "Well fine, if you are so brave you can walk to your car by yourself." She giggles as she runs ahead of me to catch up with a couple girls walking out together.      Whatever, last thing I was worried about was getting eaten by a cougar. The only thing currently eating me was the ever stacking pile of bills at home on the kitchen table. s**t, that reminds me; I hurry to the office and pick up my pay stub from the box that the secretary leaves employee documents in, for those who work the evening shift like me. It was already 10:45 by the time I walk out the door, normally I can leave by 10:15 and even ten on the dot sometimes if I'm lucky. Oh well, nothing to worry about besides a big scary cougar ready to eat my guts for dessert. I laugh at the thought As I see Grace pulling a way and rolls down her window to yell a loud, "Good-bye!!!"     I laugh as I shout back, "Here Kitty, Kitty, Kitty!"     She shakes her head in disbelief as they drive away in the distance and of course I am parked at the far end of the parking lot next to, wait for it, the dumpster. I laugh out loud at the irony, oh perfect, just my luck. I grumble on down to my white pickup when I feel something that give me goosebumps. I hear something moving behind the trees and quicken my pace. s**t! It's the damn cougar! Here's to my death, I need to hurry and get to my truck an stop messing around.      A loud howl escapes from behind the tall evergreen trees that lurk around the border of the nursing home I've worked at for the past two years. s**t! s**t! s**t! Oh my God, that sounded like a f*****g wolf! Not no cougar no! That was definitely a wolf! My terror breaks out of me and I bolt to my truck, I don't even care if I look like an i***t, I am not becoming wolf food tonight. No of no.      I'm almost to the driver side door of my truck when I hear something beside me in the trees, I don't want to look, but something is drawing me to whatever was lurking behind the trees and brush. For some unknown reason I slow down and take my gaze over to what felt like all eyes on me. I gasp as I see a group of yellow and red eyes, but what really take my gaze was the staring black eyes that I couldn't even make out until they pushed themselves closer to me out of the brush.      A face of a dark black wolf emerges from the trees, taller than the big blue dumpster and maybe even taller than my pickup, but that wasn't what frightened me. It was his eyes, the big black depths of them seemed to be analyzing me, ready to kill. I drop my keys to ground in panic and immediately jump to grab them when I squat down to reach for my keys that wolf lets out a rumbling growl that I swear the entire nursing home should of heard.      Why am I not screaming? Nobody would probably hear me anyway, I'm parked so far out in the parking lot that it is impossible to hear much out here from the building. That's when I realize I am frozen, staring up at the dark black eyes that instantly turn a golden topaz, different frown the yellow and red eyes behind the bushes, watching what was happening in front of them. Why are they not attacking me? Why are the other wolves staying hidden and not moving?      I take me chance and go to grab my keys when a black paw shoots up and steps down on my purple lanyard. s**t! What is wrong with this wolf? Why doesn't he just leave or eat me? All this teasing is inching my anxiety upwards. I am stuck, staring into the eyes of this wolf, I squat down further and reach my arms over my head in a protective stance, maybe if I submit, then they will just run away an go about their business. I don't know much about wolves, but unless they're starving then they shouldn't hurt someone that wasn't a threat. I close my eyes and put my head down in my knees, I don't want to watch.     I realized immediately that I was wrong when I felt a sharp pain in the side of my bicep and the whole world goes black. Is this death? Was I bitten and going into shock? I feel myself losing my grip and fall over onto the parking lot ground next to my truck, but then I hear a voice. It feels warm and unlike any voice I'd heard, was it an angel?     "Hurry, I got her, we need to get to the pack house before she wakes up."     "But Alpha, she is human. Luna won't like this."     The voice sounds angry as he retorted sharply with venom in his voice, "I swear Jax, I don't know how many times I got to kick your ass to let you know, I make the decisions around here! I will talk to my mother! That is NOT YOUR CONCERN!"     I hear a whimpered voice plea out, "I'm sorry Alpha, please forgive me. I can carry her for you sir, you shouldn't have to..."     I pity this voice, he just wants to help and this warm velvet of a voice that I am hearing but slowly fading away states angrily with murder in his tone, "So help me Jax, if you weren't my sister's mate I'd rip your throat out right here, right now! She is MINE! I am no weakling that can't carry a human on my back! Get out of my sight before-"      Blackness envelopes me and my mind runs off into no mans land. I can't pin point it, but I am not as scared as I was before, I felt safe and warm. Whatever had me in it's arms wasn't going to let go, and I think that terrified me more than the thought of getting eaten. I couldn't think anymore though, the blackness envelopes my mind as sleep drifts slowly over me.
