Rex didn't stop running until the sound of the bombs was soft, covered by the thick trees near the river. He didn't know the place, but his instincts told him to get under cover. He crashed into the bushes, jumping over logs and pushing through sharp plants. He hid behind the huge, wet roots of a very old tree, breathing hard. The smoke from the bridge looked like a dark pillar going up into the sky. He could hear gunshots—short, quick bursts—which meant Kilo was still fighting. She is stuck. He looked back. He had left her, but Kilo's words—"Run now, Rex! Go!"—was a clear order. He was the one she was saving, and the one being saved doesn't wait. Rex forced himself to look away from the bridge and into the dark woods. He was on a forgotten piece of land between the river and the train
