A working life
The world of the circus encampment was a huge contrast to the seclusion of their time at the farm. It was noisy, with a busy round of daily tasks to maintain all the equipment and make everything ready for performances. Clothing, even if just a linen shift, now felt strange and restrictive. Both girls found themselves stripping off when they were inside the ‘back yard’—the fenced-off area that enclosed most of the circus caravans.
Dealing with the paying public was equally strange, given how far their own lives had moved away from normality.
