chapter 2: The Secret Within

392 Words
Amara hardly slept that night. She tossed and turned, the memory of the star’s light blazing in her mind. Every time she closed her eyes, she felt again the surge of power racing through her veins. Her body still buzzed, restless, as if she had swallowed lightning. At dawn, she dragged herself to the bakery, forcing herself into routine. Her father was already kneading dough, his arms dusted with flour. Her mother was preparing trays, humming softly. “Morning, my little dreamer,” Elias said cheerfully, smiling at her. “You look tired. Were you stargazing too late again?” Amara froze. “I… yes. Couldn’t sleep.” Her mother gave her a knowing look, but said nothing. She tried to act normal, carrying trays of bread, sweeping the floor, greeting customers. But everything felt different. She noticed scents she had never paid attention to before—the sharp yeast of fresh dough, the faint trace of lavender from her mother’s dress, even the metallic tang of coins on the counter. Every sound seemed louder, every color sharper. When she lifted a basket heavy with loaves, it felt weightless. Her heart skipped. She nearly dropped it just to make it seem normal. What was happening to her? That evening, after the bakery closed and her parents went to bed, Amara returned to the hill. She clenched her fists, staring at the star-shaped mark on her palm. “Okay,” she whispered. “Show me what I can do.” She took a deep breath and jumped. Instead of falling, her body floated upward. Her eyes widened in shock. She willed herself higher, and the ground fell away beneath her. The wind roared in her ears, cool and exhilarating. She gasped, then laughed—a wild, free sound that echoed through the night. She was flying. She soared above the treetops, her heart bursting with joy. The town below looked small, the rooftops like toy blocks. She looped through the air, clumsy at first, then steadier as she focused. For the first time in her life, she felt truly free. But as she flew, she didn’t notice the darkness stirring at the edge of the sky. Far away, beyond the mountains, something ancient opened its eyes. A presence of shadow, heavy and cold, had felt the light awaken. And it whispered her name.
