Chapter 4: Nectar Awakens

364 Words
Deep in a cavern beneath the mountains, shadows writhed like living smoke. At their center stood a tall figure cloaked in black flame. His eyes glowed crimson, his skin marked by cracks that leaked darkness. He had felt it. The moment the girl touched the shard, his prison had shivered. For years, he had waited in silence, feeding on fragments of shadow, biding his time. Now, at last, the star’s power had awakened again. “Another chosen,” he hissed, his voice echoing through the cavern. “Another fool carrying the star’s light.” He remembered the first time—long ago, when he had been chosen himself. But he had rejected the light. He had seen its weakness, its foolish hope. He had embraced shadow instead, and it had consumed him. Now he was no longer a man but something darker. They called him Noctar. The enemy of the star. He closed his eyes, reaching through the darkness, and saw her. A girl with hair wild in the wind, her fists glowing silver, her heart beating fast with both fear and courage. “She is young,” he muttered. “Afraid. Untrained.” Perfect. Noctar raised his hands, and shadows spilled outward like rivers, seeping through cracks in the earth. His creatures spread toward the town, whispering her name in voices only she could hear. --- Meanwhile, Amara sat on her rooftop, trembling. The events in the square replayed over and over in her mind. The old man’s terrified eyes haunted her. Would the whole town look at her like that if they knew? She hugged her knees, staring at the sky. The stars twinkled calmly, but she felt no peace. The mark on her palm glowed faintly, as if reminding her of its presence. “I didn’t ask for this,” she whispered. “Why me? Why not someone stronger, braver?” No answer came. Only silence. But deep inside, she knew the truth: she had been chosen. Whether she wanted it or not. Her life was no longer her own. And in the shadows beyond the hills, Noctar smiled. “Soon,” he whispered. “The light will be mine.”
