Chapter 8

Shirley lowered her head, a flicker of sadness and helplessness crossing her eyes as she nodded softly. "Shirley, why didn't you tell me sooner? How could it be you?" Daniel grabbed her shoulders, his voice filled with worry as his anxious gaze searched her face. "Daniel, I didn't want to make things harder for you," Shirley said, lifting her tear-filled eyes to meet his. "I know you're still angry with the Clark family. I didn't want to be a burden." Her voice trembled. In her heart, just seeing him one last time was enough. "Shirley, how could you be so foolish? Do you think I'd just stand by and do nothing? What kind of man do you take me for? I'll do everything I can to help you!" Daniel's heart twisted with pain as he pulled her close, holding her tightly in his arms. A faint smile touched Shirley's lips, but before she could say another word, her body went limp, and she collapsed. "Shirley!" Daniel shouted, his voice breaking. Robert, who had been standing nearby, rushed forward. "Dr. Cooper, please save Shirley! The Scott family will pay any price." "You don't need to do that," Daniel replied firmly. "I'll save her. Get a ward ready immediately!" Robert didn't hesitate. He turned to his men and barked orders. "Move! Do as Dr. Cooper says and prepare the best ward right now!" The group of people moved in a flurry, scrambling into their cars and rushing toward the hospital. Daniel carried Shirley in his arms in the car, her unconscious form pressing against him as his heart pounded with worry. On the way to the hospital, he whispered to her, over and over, "Shirley, stay with me. I won't let anything happen to you." When they arrived at the ward, Daniel carefully laid her on the bed. Without wasting a moment, he began examining her, his expression sharp and focused. Beads of sweat formed on his forehead as he worked. Robert, Brian, and the others stood nearby, their faces tense with worry. No one dared to make a sound. Soon, a middle-aged man appeared, accompanied by an elderly doctor. It was Jonathan Scott, Shirley's father. But within the Scott family, Jonathan held no real power. Robert had bypassed him long ago, entrusting the group's responsibilities to Shirley instead. "Dad, I brought a renowned medical expert for Shirley. He's Dr. Andrew Turner," Jonathan said. "Shut up!" Robert snapped. Jonathan's face darkened, but he forced himself to stay calm. "Dad, I'm only trying to help Shirley. Why do you always treat me like this?" Robert let out a cold snort. "If you cared about Shirley, you wouldn't be causing trouble right now!" "Jonathan, just stop," Brian interjected. "The doctor's treating Miss Scott. Don't interfere." "This guy is a doctor?" Jonathan's eyes flicked toward Daniel, and a sneer curled at the corner of his mouth. "What could a young man like him possibly know about medicine? You're all out of your minds. Honestly, you'd be better off handing the Scott Group over to me instead of letting it fall into someone else's hands." "Jonathan!" Robert's voice thundered, his entire body trembling with fury as he glared at Jonathan. "As long as I'm alive, you'll never get your hands on the Scott Group!" Jonathan's face turned red with anger. "Dad, why are you so unfair? I'm your son!" "Look at you! All you care about is how to snatch the Scott Group from Shirley. You don't care about her condition at all. Do you even deserve to call yourself her father? What makes you think you're qualified to take over the company?" Robert's voice was filled with anger and disappointment. He knew Jonathan was ruthless and cold-hearted, unfit to take over the corporation as it would lead the company to utter ruin. Brian spoke calmly from the side. "Jonathan, this isn't the time to argue. Let Dr. Cooper focus on saving Miss Scott." "It's not that I don't trust him, but he's so young. How skilled could he possibly be?" Jonathan's lips curled into a faint, bitter smile. Ruthless as he was, Shirley was still his daughter. Daniel frowned deeply. Without looking up, he said coldly, "If you don't want your daughter to die, then keep your mouth shut." Jonathan's face darkened. He was momentarily speechless, but his anger flared. "How dare you speak to me like that!" Robert's voice thundered through the room. "Jonathan, if you keep causing trouble, I'll get you out of this ward!" Jonathan clenched his teeth, but he didn't dare say more. Just then, Andrew, the doctor Jonathan had brought along, stepped forward. "Young man, don't think too highly of yourself. Treating isn't about showing off." Daniel let out a cold laugh. "Since you're a medical expert, feel free to watch closely." The tension in the room was suffocating. Shirley, who had been unconscious all this time, suddenly coughed weakly. Her body began to tremble. "Shirley!" Robert and Jonathan called out at the same time. Daniel quickly pressed her down, his expression grim. "Don't move her! She's still in treatment!" Andrew stepped forward, trying to check her condition, but Daniel blocked him with a sharp glance. "Stay put!" Jonathan tried to speak, but Robert silenced him with a glare. The ward grew eerily quiet. The only sound was the anxious breathing of everyone present. All eyes were fixed on Shirley lying on the bed and on Daniel, who was working tirelessly. Daniel pulled a set of silver needles from his pocket. With a precise flick of his wrist, the needles seemed to fly into Shirley's acupuncture points one by one. "Heavenly Technique," Daniel murmured under his breath. He closed his eyes and silently activated his internal energy, channeling it into Shirley's body. "Is this supposed to be some kind of magic? What a joke!" Jonathan sneered, his voice dripping with mockery. Robert's expression turned fierce. "Jonathan, shut up!" Brian, unable to hold back his anger, added, "Jonathan, if you keep spouting nonsense, you can leave now!" Daniel ignored Jonathan's sarcastic words entirely, his focus unshaken. Beads of sweat began to form on his forehead, and his complexion grew pale, but his hands never stopped. Shirley's trembling intensified. Daniel gritted his teeth and pushed more energy into her. "Dr. Cooper... will this work?" Robert asked hesitantly, his voice low with worry. Daniel didn't respond. He kept his focus on the treatment. After what felt like an eternity, Shirley's trembling finally subsided, and her pale face began to regain a hint of color. Andrew stood frozen, his eyes wide with astonishment. He couldn't help but marvel at Daniel's extraordinary methods. Even Jonathan, though still skeptical, said nothing as he watched the scene unfold. "That should do it," Daniel said at last, pulling the needles out with practiced ease. Shirley's eyelids fluttered, and moments later, she opened her eyes. "Daniel... am I in heaven?" she asked weakly, her voice barely above a whisper. Daniel smiled softly as he looked at her. "Silly girl, this isn't heaven. You're still alive." "Really? I thought I'd never see you again," Shirley's eyes blinked slowly, still hazy with disbelief. Robert stepped forward, his voice trembling with excitement. "Shirley, you made us worry sick!" Brian let out a long sigh of relief. "Thank goodness you're okay. What a blessing." Andrew, still stunned, turned to Daniel. "Sir, your medical skills are truly remarkable. I've practiced medicine for decades, but I'm shocked by what I've seen today." Jonathan, though his pride was wounded, stayed silent. Seeing his daughter awake, he couldn't bring himself to argue anymore. Shirley turned her head slightly, her gaze sweeping over Robert, Jonathan, and the others. "I'm sorry for worrying all of you." Then her eyes landed on Daniel. "Daniel, thank you for saving me." Daniel gently took her hand in his. "Your health is all that matters." Robert, noticing the way Shirley looked at Daniel, made a decision on the spot. "Dr. Cooper, you saved my granddaughter's life. I've decided to give you 30% of the Scott Group's shares as a token of my gratitude."
